Choose Browsershot when you want to render a URL or HTML into an image or PDF. Choose Symfony Panther when a screenshot needs to happen inside a browser-driven journey: navigating, clicking, running JavaScript, and waiting for the application to reach a particular state. They solve related but different problems; neither is established as faster overall by the available documentation.
How the two tools differ
| Question | Browsershot | Symfony Panther |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main job? | Convert a URL, raw HTML, or local HTML file into an image or PDF; it can also return rendered HTML and triggered requests. | Control Chrome/Chromium or Firefox through WebDriver for end-to-end tests or crawling, with screenshots during browser navigation and interaction. |
| Does the workflow center on browser interaction? | Its documented interface is centered on rendering input; current setup instructions refer to Node and Puppeteer. | Yes. Its client can request pages, click links, wait for elements or visibility, execute JavaScript, and capture a screenshot. |
| What does the cited documentation establish about test integration? | Rendering functionality, not a dedicated end-to-end testing framework. | PantherTestCase integrates with PHPUnit and can start an application using PHP’s built-in web server. |
| What setup should you plan? | PHP package plus Node, Puppeteer, and browser setup. | Panther and compatible PHP/Symfony components, a supported browser, and a matching WebDriver. |
In practical terms, ask whether the screenshot is the output of a rendering operation or evidence captured during a user journey. The first points to Browsershot; the second points to Panther.

Use Browsershot to render a URL or HTML
Browsershot is the more direct fit when your input is a page or markup and your output is an image or PDF. Its repository documents URL input, raw HTML, and a local HTML file, as well as methods for retrieving body HTML after JavaScript has executed and listing requests triggered by a page.
For example, a URL-to-image workflow in PHP looks like this:
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
<?php
use SpatieBrowsershotBrowsershot;
Browsershot::url('https://example.com')
->save('screenshot.png');
Check the current package documentation for installation steps and the exact output-format methods that match your version. The current repository setup instructions refer to Node and Puppeteer. The repository notes that an older v2 used Chrome’s headless CLI and is unmaintained, so avoid basing a new setup on that version without independently verifying its maintenance status. When this workflow is enough
- You already know the URL or markup you want rendered.
- You do not need to click through the application or assert an end-to-end user flow before capturing.
- You want a rendering operation that can also produce a PDF or return rendered page data.
Use Panther to capture a browser state
Panther is designed for end-to-end tests in a real browser. Symfony documents headless operation in CI and graphical operation for debugging. Its browser client can navigate, interact with elements, wait for page state, and take a screenshot. A minimal screenshot call in a Panther test is:
$client->request('GET', 'https://example.com');
$client->takeScreenshot('screen.png');
When an application needs time to render or an element must be present before the image is useful, wait for that condition rather than capturing immediately:

- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
$client->waitFor('#report-ready');
$client->takeScreenshot('report.png');
Symfony’s guide also shows waiting for an element to become visible. This makes Panther a natural choice for capturing a state reached after JavaScript or user interaction, instead of merely rendering a known input. See the Symfony end-to-end testing guide for complete client and test setup examples.
Panther in PHPUnit and debugging
PantherTestCase integrates browser-driven checks with PHPUnit and can start the application through PHP’s built-in web server. Symfony recommends registering the Panther PHPUnit extension; its documentation says the extension can improve performance and enable interactive debugging. For screenshots on test failures, configure PANTHER_ERROR_SCREENSHOT_DIR; Panther can then automatically capture screenshots after client creation. That failure artifact helps diagnose what the browser saw, but your test still needs to define the intended page state before the normal capture assertion.
Plan dependencies and CI setup
Browsershot: Node and Puppeteer alongside PHP
Do not treat Browsershot as a PHP-only runtime dependency. Its current repository instructions refer to Node and Puppeteer, so deploy and test the required JavaScript/browser pieces in the same environment that runs the capture. Confirm your installed package’s instructions rather than copying an old installation recipe.

Panther: browser and matching WebDriver
Panther uses WebDriver to control Chrome/Chromium or Firefox. Symfony describes installing ChromeDriver or GeckoDriver through a Composer installer, manual downloads, or operating-system package managers. In CI and containers, the browser and driver must both be present and compatible; a mismatch commonly prevents the browser session from starting.

Check PHP and Symfony component compatibility
Packagist lists Symfony Panther 2.4.0 as published on January 8, 2026. That release listing requires PHP >=8.1 and includes Symfony component constraints covering ^6.4, ^7.3, and ^8.0 for several components. Your project’s actual compatibility depends on the locked dependencies, so check the package metadata and your Composer lockfile before selecting a version. (Packagist: symfony/panther)

Choose based on the capture you need
- Choose Browsershot to turn a URL, supplied HTML, or local HTML file into an image or PDF without making browser interaction the center of the task.
- Choose Panther when the screenshot must follow navigation, JavaScript execution, a click, or a wait for application state, especially as part of an end-to-end test.
- Use neither as a speed assumption. The cited sources provide no head-to-head performance benchmark. Symfony describes faster alternatives within Panther’s own client ecosystem, but those alternatives give up JavaScript, CSS, and screenshot capabilities; that is not a comparison with Browsershot.
Common setup and screenshot problems
Panther cannot start a browser session
Confirm that the chosen browser is installed and that its WebDriver is available and compatible. Use one of Symfony’s documented installation routes—Composer installer, manual driver download, or the operating system’s package manager—and make sure the CI image includes the same required pieces.
Assets are missing or return 404 in Panther
Symfony notes that the built-in PHP server may return 404 for assets outside the public directory. Compile the assets or configure a router script, as appropriate for the application and test setup, then verify the rendered page in the same environment where the screenshot is generated.
The screenshot is blank or captures the wrong state
For a state-dependent Panther capture, wait for a meaningful element or its visibility before taking the screenshot. For either package, investigate whether the page’s assets and scripts are available in the execution environment. A successful browser launch alone does not establish that the page has finished rendering.

A crawling or DOM operation is unsupported
Symfony lists limitations for Panther, including XML crawling and certain form or DOM operations. Check the current Panther guide for the specific API limitation and use a workflow compatible with the operation you need; do not assume every BrowserKit-style operation behaves identically in a real browser client.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an API call rather than managing a PHP browser stack, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For a runnable cURL example, replace the URL as needed and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.
