If you need to capture existing websites, start with ScreenshotNeo: it offers 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card, and bills only clean shots. For a recurring free allowance, ScreenshotOne states that its free API includes up to 100 URL screenshots monthly. HTML/CSS to Image itself offers 50 images a month free. These services are not interchangeable: some focus on capturing live pages, while HTML/CSS to Image also emphasizes reusable, designed graphics from your own HTML and CSS.
First decide whether you need a webpage capture or a designed image
“URL to image” can mean two different things. A screenshot API loads an existing public webpage and captures what a visitor sees. A template-rendering service turns HTML and CSS you control into repeatable graphics, such as branded cards or social images. HTML/CSS to Image supports public-URL screenshots, but its comparison page positions its core workflow around designed images, templates, visual editing, and hosting; it points readers with challenging real-world website captures toward dedicated screenshot services. HTML/CSS to Image’s comparison is vendor-authored, so treat its competitor positioning as product guidance rather than independent testing.

- Choose URL capture when you need a record or preview of a live page, including its layout and rendered content.
- Choose template rendering when you control the markup and want consistent branded output across many inputs.
- Check your actual page if it uses client-side rendering, lazy-loaded content, consent banners, or bot checks; a service’s listed options do not establish how it will perform on your specific site.

Which alternative fits your workflow?
ScreenshotNeo: clean captures and predictable billing
Try ScreenshotNeo first if you want a dedicated website screenshot API with a recurring free allowance. It accepts one GET request for a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; these steps can be switched off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Its API also offers full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device presets and custom viewports, dark mode, retina scaling, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, selector waits, delay or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers and cookies, geolocation and timezone, signed image links, caching, asynchronous jobs and webhooks, bulk capture, and an OpenAPI spec. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can ease migration. Every feature is available on every plan.

Pricing listed for ScreenshotNeo: Free includes 1,000 shots/month; Starter is $5 for 3,000; Growth $15 for 15,000; Pro $39 for 60,000; Scale $99 for 250,000; Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. Confirm current terms on the provider site.
ScreenshotOne: a dedicated API with a stated free quota
Consider ScreenshotOne when a recurring free allowance is your main filter and 100 monthly URL screenshots may be enough. Its pricing page says the free API includes HTML rendering and PDF, and that successful renders not served from cache count toward quota. Check its current documentation for the precise rendering controls you need and test with your target pages; the stated quota alone does not establish capture quality or speed.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUrlbox: a short evaluation window and broader outputs
Urlbox may fit if a seven-day trial is sufficient for evaluation or if you need work beyond static screenshots. Its documentation lists screenshots, PDFs, video, and extraction. The trial is time-limited rather than a free monthly allotment. Review the provider’s billing conditions and test the actual output formats and pages your workflow depends on.

Browserless: screenshots within broader browser automation
Browserless is a broader browser automation option rather than only a screenshot endpoint. Its REST documentation describes screenshots from a URL or raw HTML returning PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Browserless’s own comparison article reports the free-plan allowance shown above; because that figure is not from its pricing page, check the current plan directly before relying on it. Consider it when screenshots are one task in a wider browser workflow.
HTML/CSS to Image: stay if templates are the real job
Keep HTML/CSS to Image in the shortlist if you mainly create branded images from supplied markup, reusable templates, visual editing, or hosted output, rather than capturing difficult third-party pages. Its URL-rendering documentation describes delay and readiness controls, selector cropping, screen or print media, proxy, and PDF options. Its pricing page states 50 free images per month without a card. Verify the current plan selector and confirm which features apply to your intended workflow.
Compare the details that affect a real implementation
- Quota accounting: Check whether errors, cache hits, PDF output, or bulk calls use quota. ScreenshotOne says only successful uncached screenshots count; ScreenshotNeo says failed loads and cache hits are not billed and exposes billing and verdict headers. Do not assume providers count the same way.
- Rendering readiness: Dynamic pages may need a selector wait, delay, or network-idle condition. HTML/CSS to Image documents such controls for URL rendering; inspect each provider’s current docs for equivalent options.
- Capture scope and output: Verify viewport versus full-page behavior, element cropping, file formats, PDF page settings, and whether the service accepts a URL, raw HTML, or both.
- Security and delivery: Keep API secrets server-side. HTML/CSS to Image documents HMAC-signed image URLs and instructs developers not to expose the secret key in client-side code. For public image tags, determine whether signed links, expiry, caching, and retention suit your use case.
- Operations: Confirm concurrency, request limits, job/webhook behavior, and retention terms from current provider documentation. The published free-count figures alone do not establish these limits.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo makes a screenshot with one GET request. Create an API key, then run this cURL example; replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API docs for supported parameters and output options.

The output is blank or missing page content
Check whether the source page requires authentication, blocks automated browsers, or loads its content after the initial document response. Try a readiness wait or a selector that appears only after the page is populated, where supported. A provider’s free quota does not guarantee access to every site.
The screenshot cuts off content
Determine whether the API captures only the viewport or supports full-page capture; for a specific card or chart, check for element or selector capture. Lazy images may need explicit loading behavior or a longer readiness condition.

The free quota is consumed sooner than expected
Read the plan’s definition of a counted render, and distinguish cache hits, errors, retries, PDFs, and bulk requests. ScreenshotOne explicitly excludes unsuccessful renders and cache-served captures from its stated free quota; other services may define usage differently.
A trial expires or a published allowance differs
Urlbox’s stated seven-day offer is a trial, not a renewable monthly free tier. Browserless’s cited free-plan figure comes from its comparison article, so verify it on the current plan page. Recheck all limits and prices before launch.
A signed image URL exposes a secret
Do not put a secret API key into frontend code. Generate signatures on a server and return only the signed URL or resulting image to the client, following the provider’s signing documentation.

FAQ
Are these free plans independent benchmarks of capture quality?
No. They are provider-published access terms and capability descriptions, not comparative performance tests. Test representative pages from your own workload before choosing.

Can a screenshot API replace a template-image service?
Not necessarily. Capturing a live site and generating consistent graphics from templates are distinct jobs; choose based on which output you need to produce repeatedly.
