Photoswitching liquid crystals are materials whose molecular ordering, phase, optical behavior, or mechanical response can change when exposed to light. They are not one standardized substance: researchers create them by adding light-responsive molecules to liquid-crystal hosts or incorporating photoswitches into liquid-crystalline polymers and networks. The outcome depends on the chemistry, host, formulation, and environment.
What makes a liquid crystal photoswitchable?
A liquid crystal has some of the molecular order of a crystal while retaining the ability to flow or rearrange like a liquid. In a photoswitching system, light changes a molecule or material component; that change can then disturb or reorganize the liquid crystal’s collective order.

One common strategy is to mix a photoresponsive guest molecule into a liquid-crystal host. Another is to build the photoswitch into a liquid-crystalline polymer, so molecular switching and the polymer’s collective structure act together. Reviews describe these as distinct parts of a broad field that includes phase transitions, photoalignment and photoorientation, chiral-liquid-crystal modulation, and light-driven polymers and networks (Chemical Reviews, 2016; RSC review, 2014).
How does light trigger a change?
Azobenzene changes shape
Azobenzene is a widely studied molecular photoswitch. In the mechanism summarized by a 2019 review, ultraviolet light drives the molecule from its trans form to its cis form; visible light or heat can drive the reverse cis-to-trans change. Because the two forms differ in shape and can have different physical properties, switching can alter how the molecule interacts with its surroundings. Some azobenzene compounds can consequently undergo reversible light-induced solid-to-liquid transitions, although that adjacent phenomenon is not the same as every liquid-crystal response (Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 2019).

The host responds collectively
In a liquid-crystal mixture, a guest molecule’s changed shape and interactions can affect the ordering of many host molecules, not just the guest itself. An Optica proceedings abstract describes reversible, isothermal phase transitions induced by photoresponsive guests and relates the effect to the change in guest molecular shape (Optica Publishing Group, 1994). “Isothermal” means the transition is described as occurring without requiring a temperature change; it does not mean that all light-driven systems avoid heating or photothermal effects.
What can light change?
The response depends on the material and its design. Reported effects include changes in phase, alignment, optical properties, and mechanical shape. A 2016 review surveys photoinduced phase transitions, photoalignment and photoorientation, chiral-liquid-crystal modulation, and responsive polymers and networks (Chemical Reviews, 2016).

- Phase: a material may move between liquid-crystal phases or between an ordered phase and an isotropic liquid.
- Alignment and optics: molecular orientation or optical behavior may be altered, a direction relevant to photonic and adaptive-material research.
- Mechanical motion: photoresponsive polymers and networks can convert light-driven molecular changes into deformation or actuation. In some systems, photothermal heating also contributes, so observed motion need not be purely a direct photochemical effect.
These are possible classes of response, not a single guaranteed sequence. A material’s switching wavelength and resulting behavior are formulation-dependent; the literature does not establish one wavelength or outcome for all photoswitching liquid crystals.
What do published examples show?
Guest concentrations in a 1994 report
An Optica Publishing Group proceedings abstract by Tsutsumi reports that photoresponsive guest molecules at concentrations of 1–5 mol% induced reversible isothermal phase transitions in liquid-crystal phases. That range belongs to the systems in that 1994 report; it is not a general mixing recipe or a recommended concentration for other hosts (Optica Publishing Group, 1994).

UV-driven phase sequence in doped 8CB
A 2011 study reported that smectic 8CB doped with an azobenzene chromophore changed from smectic to nematic and then isotropic phases under ultraviolet irradiation. When the researchers added a chiral molecule, the reported sequence included smectic, cholesteric, and isotropic phases. These sequences describe the studied formulations, not a universal behavior of 8CB or other liquid-crystal hosts (Soft Matter, 2011).
Polymer actuation in air and water
A 2019 study examined photothermal and photomechanical contributions to actuation in azobenzene-doped liquid-crystal polymers in air and water. The authors discussed this material class in the context of responsive polymers for untethered soft or microrobotic systems. The study supports an application direction, not a claim that these materials are a standard consumer actuator (Soft Matter, 2019).

Are photoswitching liquid crystals consumer products?
The cited literature describes research materials such as synthesized compounds, doped mixtures, films, polymer networks, and possible application directions. It does not establish a standard retail product or consumer device. Photonics, adaptive materials, and actuation are research and application areas, but the examples here do not establish that a particular commercial device is available.
