“Green” spacecraft propellant usually means one of two energetic blends—ADN-based LMP-103S or HAN-based ASCENT—that can reduce some of hydrazine’s handling hazards while offering potential performance advantages. It does not mean harmless, environmentally impact-free, or ready to replace hydrazine in every spacecraft. The gains depend on the propellant and thruster, and the blends bring demanding catalyst-heating and high-temperature engineering requirements.
What is ionic-liquid propellant?
In spacecraft propulsion, the term commonly refers to energetic, salt-based propellant blends that decompose over a catalyst to produce thrust. NASA describes the prominent examples as aqueous ionic-salt and fuel blends. They are used as monopropellants: a spacecraft propulsion category in which a thruster uses one propellant supply rather than separately stored fuel and oxidizer.

“Monopropellant” describes how the propulsion system uses the propellant; it does not mean the liquid is a single chemical ingredient. These blends contain fuel and oxidizer components. Nor are the named products interchangeable: LMP-103S and ASCENT have different chemical bases and formulations.

What are LMP-103S and ASCENT?
LMP-103S: the ADN-based blend
LMP-103S is based on ammonium dinitramide (ADN). The European Space Agency describes its formulation as ADN with water, methanol, and ammonia. ESA says work on storable ADN-based liquid monopropellants with the Swedish Space Corporation and Swedish Defence Research Agency began in 1997. That history describes a spacecraft-propulsion development effort, not a consumer product.

NASA’s SmallSat propulsion survey lists ECAPS LMP-103S thruster classes of 100 mN, 1 N, 5 N, and 22 N. These are thruster classes, not performance figures for the propellant by itself.
ASCENT: the HAN-based blend
ASCENT, formerly called AF-M315E, is based on hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN) and is a fuel-and-oxidizer blend. NASA’s Green Propellant Infusion Mission (GPIM) overview documents an in-space demonstration of AF-M315E’s practical capabilities. The former name remains useful when reading accounts of that demonstration; ASCENT is the name used in NASA’s more recent SmallSat survey.
Is green propellant safer than hydrazine?
“Green” is a relative aerospace safety label, not a claim that a propellant is safe to touch or release into the environment. NASA’s 2024 state-of-the-art review and 2025 SmallSat survey describe reduced hazards relative to hydrazine in relevant handling contexts. The SmallSat survey says the blends can be handled with conventional personal protective equipment; that does not make them benign consumer chemicals or remove the need for spacecraft-specific safety controls.

ESA’s historical article captured the limit of the label in a quote from Mark Ford, then Head of ESA’s Propulsion Engineering section: “No energetic rocket fuel is ever going to be as benign as water, and we’re clearly not about to suddenly replace hydrazine completely but we hope to eventually provide industry with an acceptable alternative.”
How do the propellants compare with hydrazine?
The broad comparison is about system-level trade-offs, not a single ranking that applies to every formulation and mission. NASA’s 2024 review says the ionic-liquid blends may offer higher specific impulse and density-specific impulse than hydrazine, depending on formulation. Specific impulse describes propellant efficiency by mass; density-specific impulse relates that efficiency to the volume occupied by the propellant, making it relevant when tank volume matters. The review does not establish one universal numerical advantage for all thrusters.
| Consideration | LMP-103S and ASCENT | Hydrazine benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| Handling hazard | NASA describes reduced hazards in relevant handling contexts and says conventional personal protective equipment can be used. | NASA’s comparison treats hydrazine as the more hazardous conventional benchmark. |
| Specific impulse | Potentially higher, depending on formulation and propulsion system. | Conventional comparison point; no universal numerical value is established here. |
| Density-specific impulse and tank volume | Potentially higher, depending on formulation; this may matter when propellant volume is constrained. | Conventional comparison point; no universal tank-volume saving is established here. |
| Thermal and catalyst demands | Greater catalyst preheating and higher combustion temperatures create additional design demands. | The NASA review identifies these as added demands of the alternatives relative to hydrazine. |
ESA’s historical article quoted Ford saying, “ADN has a 30% better performance than hydrazine, and is much less toxic.” This was a dated, attributed institutional statement, not a current universal result for every ADN formulation, thruster, or meaning of “performance.” NASA’s later review provides the more useful qualification: advantages depend on formulation, while system design imposes trade-offs.

What engineering compromises do they bring?
More catalyst preheating
The catalyst needs greater preheating than in the hydrazine comparison described by NASA. That requirement affects the thruster and its operating system; the propellant’s potential efficiency does not remove the need to design around ignition and thermal conditions.
Higher combustion temperatures
Higher combustion temperatures mean the catalyst and chamber materials must tolerate more heat. NASA identifies those material demands as a source of added cost. This is why these blends are not drop-in replacements: adopting one involves propulsion-system and spacecraft design decisions, not simply changing the liquid in an existing tank.
Volume advantages are mission-dependent
A higher density-specific impulse can be relevant to a spacecraft with tight tank-volume constraints, but it is not, by itself, a promise of a particular tank-size reduction. The usable benefit depends on the formulation and propulsion system. The sources summarized here do not establish a universal tank-volume saving or a single storage comparison that applies across missions.

Every tweak teaches something new about physics, force, and flight.
Have spacecraft used ionic-liquid propellants?
Yes. NASA’s GPIM overview documents an in-space demonstration of AF-M315E, now called ASCENT. NASA’s 2025 SmallSat survey identifies ASCENT and LMP-103S as mature ionic-liquid monopropellant blends and lists the ECAPS LMP-103S thruster classes noted above. That supports real spacecraft engineering use and development; it does not show that either blend has universally displaced hydrazine or is used across spacecraft generally.
Can green propellant replace hydrazine?
Not as a universal, immediate swap. The reduced handling hazards and possible specific-impulse or volume-efficiency advantages make these blends alternatives for missions whose propulsion systems can accommodate their requirements. Greater catalyst preheating, higher combustion temperatures, material limits, and cost are part of that decision. NASA’s documented demonstration and maturity assessment show that the technology is more than a laboratory concept, but they do not establish a wholesale replacement for hydrazine.
