How Are Cancer Cells and Parasites Detected?

Cancer and parasite testing use different methods. Learn when clinicians use biopsy, blood or stool tests, imaging, and urgent malaria testing.

Cancer and parasitic infections are detected through different diagnostic pathways. Cancer evaluation may include imaging, laboratory tests and examination of a tissue sample; parasite testing is chosen for the suspected organism and may use stool, blood, another specimen or imaging. No single test detects every cancer or parasite, and a screening result is not the same as a diagnosis.

How are cancer cells detected?

The right tests depend on symptoms, examination findings and the suspected cancer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) explains in “Tests and Procedures Used to Diagnose Cancer” that there is no single test that diagnoses every cancer. Clinicians may combine a medical history and physical examination with laboratory tests, imaging and procedures that collect cells or tissue.

Laboratory abnormalities can be clues, but they do not prove cancer: results can be abnormal in someone without cancer, or normal in someone who has it. Imaging can help locate an abnormal area or assess its extent, but a tissue sample is often needed to identify what the cells are.

Biopsy and pathology

A biopsy removes cells or tissue from an area of concern. A pathologist examines the sample under a microscope and may perform additional tests. The resulting pathology report describes the findings and can help guide treatment decisions. How the sample is collected depends on the body site and the cancer being considered.

Blood tests and liquid biopsy

A routine blood test can provide clues about health, but it is not a universal cancer detector. A liquid biopsy is a specific kind of test that examines blood or another body fluid for cancer cells or material shed by a tumor, such as DNA. Depending on the particular test and clinical situation, it may help with treatment planning, assessing response or monitoring for recurrence. It does not replace tissue diagnosis in every setting.

Tumor-marker tests measure substances made by cancer cells or by other cells in response to cancer. The NCI’s “Tumor Markers” page cautions that these tests generally have not worked well for screening people without symptoms: some miss cancers, while others can be elevated when cancer is not present. Certain markers may have a role in supporting diagnosis, selecting treatment or monitoring disease, depending on the marker and cancer.

Does a cancer screening test diagnose cancer?

No. As the NCI explains in “Cancer Screening Overview,” screening is intended to look for a possible problem before symptoms appear; it is not itself a diagnosis. An abnormal screening result means that follow-up may be needed. Diagnostic evaluation determines what the finding represents and may involve further imaging, laboratory tests or biopsy. A screening test can also have a false-negative result, so symptoms or clinical concerns still warrant medical assessment.

How do doctors test for parasites?

The test must fit the suspected parasite, symptoms, medical history and travel history. The CDC’s “Diagnosis of Parasitic Diseases,” reviewed April 9, 2024, notes that more than one test may be needed and that there is no single blood test for all parasitic infections.

  • No Diet Restrictions: No preparation is required before using the colon disease test. However, for two days before and during testing, try to eat vegetables, fruits and cereals which contain fiber. These may assist you in having easier bowel movements
Method Specimen or approach What it can help assess
Ova-and-parasite examination Stool examined for parasite eggs or organisms Selected parasites associated with diarrhea and other abdominal illness. CDC recommends three or more stool samples collected on different days because a single sample may not reveal the parasite.
Serology or antigen testing Blood Antibodies or parasite antigens in selected infections; the appropriate test depends on the organism.
Blood-smear microscopy Blood examined under a microscope Parasites found in blood, including those that cause malaria, filariasis or babesiosis. The suspected infection determines how the smear is used.
Molecular testing, such as PCR Specimen selected for the suspected parasite Identification or confirmation of selected parasites. CDC DPDx describes molecular diagnosis for stool specimens; for malaria, molecular tests can help identify species or mixed infections.
Imaging X-ray, MRI or CT May help find lesions in organs associated with certain parasitic diseases; it is not a general parasite test.
Endoscopy or colonoscopy Direct examination of the digestive tract May be considered to look for intestinal parasites or other causes when stool examinations have not identified the cause.

The CDC’s “Diagnosis of Parasitic Diseases” describes these as organism- and situation-specific approaches, not interchangeable tests. A clinician chooses among them based on the question being investigated.

How is malaria detected in blood?

Suspected malaria requires urgent professional evaluation and laboratory testing, particularly after travel to an area where malaria occurs. CDC clinician guidance dated August 17, 2026 describes thick and thin blood smears, malaria antigen rapid diagnostic tests and nucleic-acid amplification tests as diagnostic options.

  • Fast and Easy-to-Use: Colon cancer Test at home and get results in just 10 minutes, with no mail-in lab testing required.
  • High Accuracy - The colorectal cancer screening test is over 99% accurate.
  • Thick and thin blood smears: Microscopy is needed to confirm infection, identify the parasite species, estimate the parasite burden and monitor response to treatment.
  • Rapid antigen tests: These can provide a quicker result, but they do not replace smear microscopy for all of the information needed for diagnosis and clinical management.
  • Nucleic-acid tests: These can help confirm species and identify mixed infections, and may be more sensitive and specific than microscopy. Results may take too long to guide initial urgent care.

If initial smears are negative but malaria remains a concern, CDC guidance advises repeating smears every 12–24 hours until three total sets have been examined before ruling it out. This repeat-testing advice is specific to suspected malaria; it should not be applied to other parasite tests.

What a test result can—and cannot—tell you

Detection is not one uniform task. A test may look for a possible problem, investigate a suspected condition, identify a species, characterize cells or help monitor treatment. The specimen and method determine which question it can answer. A negative result may not settle the issue if the suspected disease is difficult to detect in that specimen or timing, and an abnormal result may require confirmation.

For cancer, pathology may be needed to establish what an abnormal tissue area is. For parasites, the clinician may select a different specimen or additional test when the first test does not answer the clinical question. Interpretation belongs in the context of symptoms, history and the particular test—not a home microscope examination or an online reading of a result.
