An adjustment layer changes color or tone without directly changing the image pixels beneath it. In Photoshop, it normally affects the layers below it; its mask controls where the change appears, and you can clip it to limit the adjustment to the layer directly below. Hide, revise, reorder, or remove the layer to revisit that edit. If you’re asking, “What is an adjustment layer in Photoshop?”, think of it as an editable layer for color and tonal corrections—not a universal solution for every kind of image edit.
What an adjustment layer changes—and what it does not
Photoshop adjustment layers hold supported color or tonal changes separately from the underlying pixel data. You can modify the settings later, change where the effect appears, or hide and discard the layer. Adobe describes them as a nondestructive way to make color and tonal edits: Adobe’s adjustment-layer guide.

“Nondestructive” is specific here: the adjustment layer avoids directly applying that color or tonal change to the pixels below. It does not mean every edit in a document is automatically reversible, or that an adjustment layer is the right tool for transformations, filters, or retouching.
How the layer stack and mask control the adjustment
Which layers are affected
By default, an adjustment layer affects the layers beneath it in the Layers panel. Its position therefore matters: moving it can change which parts of the stack receive the correction. To apply an adjustment to just one layer, make it a clipping mask for the layer directly below. This limits its scope to that layer rather than the broader stack. Where the effect appears
Each adjustment layer has a mask. White on the mask reveals the adjustment, black conceals it, and gray reveals it partially. Paint on the mask to keep a correction in selected areas—for example, conceal a global color change from a subject while leaving it visible in the background. Painting on the mask changes the adjustment’s reach, not the underlying image pixels.
How to create and refine an adjustment layer
- Select the image layer. In the Layers panel, select the layer you want to work around. Decide whether the correction should affect the lower stack or only that layer.
- Add an adjustment layer. Use the new adjustment-layer control in the Layers panel, then choose an adjustment suited to the goal. Adobe’s instructions for creating adjustment layers cover this Layers-panel workflow. Available adjustment types can differ by application and version.
- Set the correction. Adjust the controls for the chosen type. For example, Hue/Saturation is one Photoshop adjustment type for changing color characteristics. Judge the result in the context of the image rather than expecting a preset setting to suit every photo.
- Check the scope. If the adjustment should affect only the layer immediately below, clip it to that layer. Otherwise, keep in mind that the adjustment affects layers beneath it in the stack.
- Constrain it with the mask. Start with the overall correction, then paint black on the mask where the effect should be hidden and white where it should show. Use gray where partial visibility is appropriate.
- Compare and retain the editable document. Toggle the adjustment layer’s visibility to compare the image with and without that correction. Keep the layered file if you expect to revise the edit; hiding or discarding the adjustment restores the prior appearance for that adjustment.
Choose the nondestructive tool for the edit
Adjustment layers are one part of a broader Photoshop workflow. Adobe also documents Smart Objects for nondestructive transforms, Smart Filters for editable filter effects, masks, and separate layers for supported retouching workflows. Choose according to what you are changing:

- Color or tone: use an adjustment layer when you want to revise, hide, or localize the correction.
- Transforming an object: consider a Smart Object workflow rather than treating an adjustment layer as a safeguard for a transform.
- Applying a filter: use a Smart Filter workflow when you need the filter effect to remain editable.
- Retouching: use an appropriate separate-layer or other nondestructive method where supported.
These methods preserve editability in different ways; an adjustment layer does not protect every type of source data. Adobe’s overview, Nondestructive editing in Photoshop (last updated May 24, 2023), describes these approaches alongside adjustment layers.
What to know when using Affinity Photo
Affinity Photo documentation also describes adjustment layers as a nondestructive editing method and covers masking. Its cited help pages are older, so the general concept is comparable, but do not assume Photoshop’s labels, controls, or exact interface steps match your Affinity Photo version.
