Install Firefox on Arch Linux and Set Its Interface Language

Install Arch Linux’s standard Firefox package with pacman, then launch it from your desktop menu or terminal. See what to check before choosing another edition or language pack.

On an existing Arch Linux system, install the standard Firefox package with sudo pacman -S firefox. Once pacman finishes, open Firefox from your desktop’s application menu or run firefox in a terminal. This assumes your system can reach its configured package repositories; it does not install Arch Linux itself.

Install the standard Firefox package

  1. Open a terminal in Arch Linux.
  2. Run sudo pacman -S firefox and follow pacman’s prompts.
  3. When installation completes, launch Firefox from the application menu or enter firefox in a terminal.

The standard package is named firefox in Arch’s package guidance. See the ArchWiki Firefox page for installation details.

Choose an edition before installing an alternative

ArchWiki lists Beta, Developer Edition, Extended Support Release (ESR), and Nightly as alternatives to the standard package. Their package sources differ: some options are available through Mozilla channel pages, while some are supplied through the AUR. Check the current source and its installation instructions before choosing an alternative; the available guidance does not establish a current version comparison or support-lifecycle schedule.

Set Firefox’s interface language

ArchWiki describes language-pack names using the pattern firefox-i18n-languagecode, where languagecode represents the language you want. Some Firefox editions use separate language-pack packages, so confirm the package for your edition on the ArchWiki Firefox page before installing it.

ArchWiki notes that language packs are disabled for Developer Edition and Nightly because frequent changes to interface strings may cause crashes. Its language-pack guidance is documented at ArchWiki: Firefox.
