Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Yes—phosphoric acid can be converted into useful organophosphorus and inorganic phosphorus products without first making white phosphorus (P4). Michael B. Geeson and Christopher C. Cummins demonstrated a route that reduces phosphoric acid or dehydrated phosphate with trichlorosilane, producing a previously unreported bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion. That intermediate can be hydrolysed to phosphine, converted to hexafluorophosphate, or used to make P–C bonds such as alkylphosphines. The chemistry is a research-stage alternative, not yet proof that industry can retire white-phosphorus furnaces.
What replaces P4 in the proposed route?
The proposed replacement is not another elemental form of phosphorus. It is a silicon-bound phosphide intermediate: the bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion. It is made directly from phosphate, so the process can start with phosphoric acid or a dehydrated phosphate such as trimetaphosphate instead of passing through white phosphorus.

In the demonstrated sequence, trichlorosilane supplies the reducing environment and silicon-containing groups that stabilize the phosphorus anion. The intermediate can be isolated as a tetrabutylammonium salt, or it can be generated and consumed in the same vessel. That second option matters for process development because it avoids a separate isolation and storage operation for a reactive intermediate.
The Science paper describes the species as “a simple inorganic anion produced in a reaction using trichlorosilane, a high-production-volume chemical.” Cummins said, “To our knowledge, [the silylphosphide] has never been described before.” The novelty is therefore the direct phosphate-to-phosphide conversion and the useful chemistry that follows from the P–Si bonds.

The reaction sequence in plain language
- Choose a phosphate feedstock. The starting material can be phosphoric acid or dehydrated phosphate, including trimetaphosphate.
- Reduce the phosphate with trichlorosilane. This forms the bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion rather than white phosphorus.
- Use or isolate the anion. Researchers prepared a tetrabutylammonium salt, but patent examples also describe one-pot processing that keeps the intermediate in solution.
- Transform the phosphorus centre. Hydrolysis gives P–H chemistry, xenon difluoride gives P–F chemistry, and alkyl chlorides provide a route to P–C products such as alkylphosphines.
The sequence demonstrated in the reported work also avoids elemental chlorine. That does not mean the chemistry is chlorine-free: trichlorosilane contains chlorine and the resulting silicon-chloride streams require managed handling. The specific claim is that no separate elemental-chlorine step was needed in the demonstrated conversion.
Why white phosphorus is the conventional bottleneck
Most non-fertilizer phosphorus chemicals have traditionally been made through white phosphorus. The thermal route reduces phosphate rock with carbon in an electric arc furnace. The furnace operates at about 1,500 °C and consumes approximately 13.5 kWh per kilogram of P4, according to the 2024 US11993623B2 patent. White phosphorus is also toxic and pyrophoric, so its manufacture, transport and storage impose severe safety requirements.
Only a small fraction of mined phosphate follows this high-temperature route. Chemistry World reported in 2018 that roughly 2% of mined phosphorus rock is reduced to make about one million tonnes of white phosphorus each year. The remaining phosphate overwhelmingly serves fertilizer production. The same 2024 patent says about 95% of annually mined phosphate rock goes through the wet process, in which phosphate rock is treated to make phosphoric acid rather than thermally reduced to P4.
That split explains the appeal of the new chemistry: it seeks to use the large, existing wet-process phosphate stream as a starting point for higher-value phosphorus products, instead of rebuilding a separate high-temperature P4 supply chain.

What the new intermediate can make
Phosphine through hydrolysis
When the silylphosphide intermediate is hydrolysed, the P–Si bonds are replaced by P–H bonds and phosphine (PH3) is released. The Science paper reports at least 65% yield by quantitative 31P NMR. This is important because phosphine is a starting material for multiple phosphorus compounds, yet conventional phosphine supply is tied to established white-phosphorus or metal-phosphide processes.

Phosphine is also highly toxic and flammable, so producing it without P4 does not remove the need for gas-tight equipment, detection and abatement. The result changes the phosphorus feedstock and reaction sequence; it does not make phosphine safe for casual handling.
Hexafluorophosphate for battery electrolytes
Reaction with xenon difluoride converts the intermediate into lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), a widely used salt in lithium-ion battery electrolytes. The reported isolated yield is 70%. This demonstrates P–F bond formation from the phosphate-derived intermediate and connects the route to a product class that is central to rechargeable-battery manufacturing.

Alkylphosphines and other P–C products
Alkyl chlorides can react with the intermediate to make alkylphosphines, showing that the platform can form P–C bonds directly. The patent describes one-pot versions in which the silylphosphide is generated from phosphate and then reacted with the carbon electrophile without isolating the intermediate.
P–C chemistry is the bridge to many organophosphorus families, including ligand precursors and intermediates used in medicines and agrochemicals. The work also discusses routes toward metal phosphides, quantum-dot precursors and a phosphinic-acid intermediate relevant to fosinopril synthesis. These examples show breadth, but they are not evidence that every commercial phosphorus product can be made economically by the same sequence.

How the chemistry changes the energy and hazard balance
The strongest case for the route is avoiding the furnace step that turns phosphate into P4. A wet-process phosphate feedstock is already produced at enormous scale, and the reported chemistry runs far below furnace temperature. It could therefore reduce exposure to white phosphorus and move phosphorus conversion closer to existing phosphoric-acid operations.
However, a lower reaction temperature is not automatically a lower total energy footprint. Willem Schipper, a phosphorus-chemicals consultant quoted by Chemistry World, noted that trichlorosilane is manufactured through elemental silicon and that this silicon production uses nearly the same amount of energy as phosphorus production. His warning is central to any honest comparison: the route may shift part of the energy burden upstream rather than eliminate it.
A complete comparison would need to count phosphate preparation, trichlorosilane manufacture, solvent and heat requirements, recovery of silicon-containing by-products, product purification, waste treatment and transport. The available demonstration does not provide that full life-cycle or plant-wide energy balance.
Safety trade-offs
- What is avoided: direct production and handling of toxic, pyrophoric white phosphorus and operation of a 1,500 °C electric arc for the phosphorus-reduction step.
- What remains: trichlorosilane is a reactive industrial chemical; phosphine is acutely toxic; xenon difluoride is a powerful fluorinating reagent; and alkyl chlorides and silicon-chloride streams require engineered containment.
- What changes operationally: the process may replace bulk P4 storage with liquid or solution-phase intermediates, but sealed-vessel operation and controlled gas handling are still necessary in the reported examples.
What has actually been demonstrated?
The work establishes a sequence of reactions, not a commercial plant. The patent reports gram-scale preparation and processing at roughly 70–150 °C in a sealed vessel. Those conditions are materially different from a 1,500 °C furnace, but gram-scale chemistry cannot by itself establish heat removal, mixing, corrosion control, impurity tolerance, solvent recovery or economics at tonne scale.
The Science paper acknowledges a sustainable-development partnership between Université Mohammed VI Polytechnic and MIT, along with discussions involving OCP Group. Those links connect the research to phosphate-industry scale-up questions. Publicly available information from the cited work does not establish a commercial facility, current industrial deployment or a production contract based on the route.

Questions a scale-up program would have to answer
- Can wet-process phosphoric acid impurities be tolerated, or must the acid be extensively purified before reduction?
- Can trichlorosilane be supplied, recycled and recovered at the required scale without erasing the energy advantage?
- How will silicon-containing by-products and chloride-bearing waste be separated and reused?
- Can the phosphide intermediate be generated continuously or in a robust one-pot sequence while controlling exotherms and pressure?
- Will product purification meet the specifications for battery salts, pharmaceutical intermediates, ligands and electronic materials?
- Does the process remain economical when phosphoric acid, trichlorosilane, fluorinating reagents, solvents, utilities and waste treatment are all included?
What this means for phosphorus manufacturing
The route is best understood as a platform, not a single replacement product. Its central idea is to preserve phosphorus in a reactive, molecular form immediately after phosphate reduction. Once the bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide is available, chemists can choose reactions that install hydrogen, fluorine or carbon substituents.
That flexibility could matter most where the existing P4 route is disproportionately cumbersome: specialty chemicals made in many different formulations rather than one high-volume commodity. A phosphate producer could, in principle, connect wet-process acid to several downstream products without first making, cooling, storing and shipping white phosphorus. Whether that integration is practical depends on local feedstock quality, trichlorosilane availability, product demand and environmental controls.
The chemistry also offers a way to rethink plant geography. Wet-process phosphoric acid plants are commonly located near phosphate resources, while white-phosphorus production requires dedicated electric-arc infrastructure and substantial power. A successful phosphate-to-phosphide process could place more downstream synthesis near acid production. That is a possible industrial configuration, not a demonstrated outcome.
Common misconceptions about the result
“Phosphoric acid can now replace white phosphorus everywhere.”
No. The demonstrations show several valuable transformations, but they do not cover every phosphorus product or prove competitive cost. The route is a candidate platform whose industrial scope still has to be established.

“Lower temperature means zero environmental impact.”
No. Trichlorosilane production relies on energy-intensive silicon chemistry, and the overall footprint depends on reagent manufacture, recovery and disposal. Schipper’s assessment specifically cautions that energy may be shifted upstream.
“The reported yields describe a finished industrial product.”
No. The reported values—at least 65% phosphine by quantitative 31P NMR and 70% isolated lithium hexafluorophosphate—are results for the demonstrated reactions. They do not specify commercial purity, plant throughput, lifetime, cost or regulatory qualification.
Bottom line: a credible alternative pathway, not a commercial white-phosphorus replacement yet
Geeson and Cummins showed that phosphate can be reduced directly to a bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion and then steered into P–H, P–F and P–C chemistry. That is a genuine change in phosphorus synthesis: phosphoric acid or trimetaphosphate can feed phosphine, lithium hexafluorophosphate and alkylphosphines without first producing P4.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe opportunity is substantial because conventional white-phosphorus manufacture is exceptionally hot, energy intensive and hazardous. The limitation is equally clear: trichlorosilane has its own energy burden, the chemistry has so far been demonstrated at gram scale, and no commercial deployment is established. The route deserves serious scale-up and life-cycle evaluation, but it should currently be described as a promising research-stage pathway rather than the industry’s new standard.
