How can I tell if someone is spying on my cellphone, and what apps can someone use to spy on a phone? Covert monitoring software—often called stalkerware—is designed to collect information without the phone owner’s knowledge. A list of “five effective” spy apps would risk recommending invasive software, and there is no reliable evidence here to rank five currently available products. If your goal is family coordination, use consent-based location sharing instead.
What “spy apps” do—and why a top-five list is unsafe
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) defines stalkerware as software someone installs on a phone or other device without its owner’s knowledge. Depending on the product, it may track location, read messages or email, expose photos or browsing activity, or access conversations. Some products hide themselves or disguise their names, according to the FTC’s guidance, updated June 30, 2026 (FTC: Stalkerware: What To Know).

That covert access is fundamentally different from a person choosing to share their location with family. Secretly monitoring someone can invade privacy and create safety and data-security risks. The FTC has also described phones with stalkerware as potentially compromised: some products may require a rooted Android phone or jailbroken iPhone, meaning built-in security protections were bypassed. This is context for the risk, not a reason to alter a device’s protections.
There is no substantiated current list of five effective spy apps to recommend. FTC enforcement announcements name products involved in past cases; they are not endorsements, evidence that a product remains available, or independent tests of effectiveness. For example, the FTC’s 2019 action involving Retina-X named MobileSpy, PhoneSheriff, and TeenShield (FTC: Stalking apps: Retina-X settles charges). Those names should not be treated as current recommendations.

How to respond if you suspect your phone is being monitored
Unusual battery drain, higher data use, overheating, or unexpected restarts can be clues, but they have many possible causes and do not prove that spyware is installed. Greater concern is warranted if someone knows private details or your exact location that you did not share, or had unsupervised access to your phone. The FTC recommends thinking about safety before changing a device.
- Use a different device to get help. If you think your phone is monitored, avoid using it to research the issue or contact support; those actions could alert the person monitoring it. Contact a trusted advocate from a device you believe is safe.
- Make a safety plan before making changes. Removing software, resetting the phone, or changing account access may be noticed and could affect your safety. An advocate can help you weigh options for your situation.
- Consider preserving evidence. If it is safe to do so, discuss documenting what is happening before removing anything or resetting the device.
- Seek tailored support. In the United States, the National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), by texting START to 88788, or at thehotline.org. If you are elsewhere, contact a local support service.
These safety steps reflect the FTC’s stalkerware guidance. No single symptom or checklist can confirm monitoring; an advocate can help you choose next steps without assuming the phone is safe.

Consent-based alternatives for family location sharing
If you want to coordinate with family or find a missing device, built-in Apple and Google tools offer a clear alternative: the account holder or family member chooses whether to share, and sharing controls remain available. These features are not covert monitoring apps.
| Option | Platform and purpose | Who controls sharing | What it can reveal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Find My and Family Sharing | Apple devices; family location sharing and help locating missing devices. | Family members can choose whether to share their location and can stop sharing. | Location shared with family members; Find My can also help locate a missing device. Details depend on the feature and settings used. |
| Google Location Sharing | Google services, including Maps and Family Link; real-time location sharing with chosen people. | Location Sharing is off by default; the account holder chooses recipients and can manage sharing. | Recipients can see real-time location and related account details. The details visible depend on the sharing context. |
| Family Link location | Google Families; location support for a child’s Android device or compatible Fitbit device after location sharing is enabled. | A parent or family manager uses Family Link settings; location sharing must be enabled. | The child’s device location, subject to the feature and account settings. |
Apple: Find My and Family Sharing
Apple’s Family Sharing setup allows members to choose whether to share location, and members can stop sharing. Find My also includes tools for locating missing devices. See Apple Support: Share your location with your family for current setup and controls.

Google says Location Sharing is off by default and lets an account holder choose specific people to receive real-time location. The information visible to recipients depends on the feature and sharing context. Family Link location support described by Google applies to a child’s Android device or compatible Fitbit device after location sharing is enabled. Past enforcement cases illustrate why hidden monitoring deserves caution, but they cannot establish which apps work today or how current products compare. In 2021, the FTC announced an action against SpyFone and said the company had secretly collected data from devices. In a September 2021 press release, Samuel Levine, then Acting Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said: “This case is an important reminder that surveillance-based businesses pose a significant threat to our safety and security.” Read the FTC’s SpyFone announcement for the agency’s account of that action.

The FTC later noted that a petition relating to the SpyFone order was being considered in 2025 (FTC: 2025 update on the SpyFone order). That procedural update is not a current app review or a finding that any product is safe to use. Laws on monitoring and location sharing vary by jurisdiction, so these examples should not be treated as legal advice.
