AI in Your IDE vs. AI in Your Terminal: Which Coding Workflow Fits?

The better AI coding workflow depends on how you supply context, inspect edits, and run commands. IDE and terminal surfaces can overlap, as Cursor’s Agent and CLI show.

Neither an IDE-based agent nor a terminal-based agent is universally better. Choose based on how you want to provide context, review edits, and run your code-and-test loop. The choice is also less binary than it sounds: Cursor describes both an IDE agent and a CLI agent.

What actually changes between the workflows?

The central difference is the surface where you steer the agent and inspect its work. In an IDE-centered flow, code, navigation, and changes are close together in the editor. In a terminal-centered flow, interaction happens through a command-line interface. Those are useful descriptions of workflow, not guarantees about what any particular tool can do: capabilities and controls vary by product and change over time.

The question appeared in a Product Hunt community discussion as a choice between an AI-native editor and a traditional editor paired with an AI in the terminal. That phrasing captures a common preference, but one discussion prompt is not evidence of how developers generally work.

What an IDE-centered flow offers

Cursor’s documentation describes its Agent as able to search a codebase, edit multiple files, run terminal commands, and fix errors. That makes the IDE workflow more than inline completion: an agent can work across files and use the terminal as part of its loop. See Cursor’s Agent overview.

It frees up 25% of desk space for better mouse movement. Designed for small desks, laptop setups, gamers and minimalists. For frequent number‑pad input, choose our full‑size KN104 with a complete dedicated numpad, or opt for our new KN98 model — compact 99‑key that retains the numpad while saving desktop real‑estate
  • 【Tri-Mode Connectivity for Multi-Device Workflow】Connect via USB‑C, 2.4GHz wireless, or Bluetooth 5.0 (3 channels supported), with ultra‑low latency (USB 2ms, 2.4G 5ms, BT 11ms). The built‑in 4000mAh rechargeable battery ensures stable wireless performance. Continue typing while charging via wired mode when power runs low
  • 【Creamy Thocky Typing Sound】The gasket mount absorbs harsh vibrations and hollow echoes to produce a smooth marbly thock, rather than loud clacky taps. Each keypress feels softly cushioned. Whether you’re working late at home or typing in a shared office space, the mellow, ASMR-like tone makes every keystroke a genuinely enjoyable experience
  • 【Hot-swap for Tailored Sound & Tactile】Pre-lubed Bsun linear switches (45-50gf actuation) deliver a buttery response. Compatible with both 3 pin and 5pin switches, they enables solder-free swapping. From beginners to frequent typists and dedicated writers, craft your preferred typing signature without complex modding
  • 【RGB Backlighting & Programmable】A warm ambient glow surrounds PBT keycaps and case edges, creating a calm, inviting desk vibe for late-night workspace. Adjust hues and brightness through shortcut keys or companion software. The KN85 driver (Windows only, wired/2.4G mode) lets you remap keys and set custom macros to boost your daily productivity

Cursor also documents different interaction modes. Its documentation describes Ask as a way to search the codebase without making changes and Manual as focused direct editing. Mode labels and behavior can change, so consult the current mode documentation before relying on a particular name or control.

For a developer who prefers to keep code and agent interaction in one environment, this arrangement can make it straightforward to inspect relevant files and review edits in context. That is a workflow consideration, not a measured finding that IDE agents produce better code.

What a terminal-centered flow offers—and what is not established here

A terminal-based workflow means directing an agent through a command-line interface rather than treating an editor panel as the primary interaction surface. It may suit developers who already organize work around shell commands and command-line tools. But the interface alone does not tell you how an agent selects context, asks before changing files, or handles commands; those details must be checked in the specific tool’s current documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cursor itself documents a CLI that enables agents in the terminal and lists Agent and Plan modes. Its CLI documentation is at Cursor CLI. This is a concrete example of why IDE versus terminal is not always a choice between separate products.

Check Anthropic’s current documentation for those specifics before choosing or configuring Claude Code; do not infer feature parity or differences from the label “terminal-based” alone.

Choose by the work you need to do

Decision point An IDE-centered flow may fit when… A terminal-centered flow may fit when…
Providing and inspecting context You want to navigate code and review related files in the editor. Cursor documents codebase search for its Agent. You prefer to steer work from the command line. How a particular CLI gathers context depends on that tool; verify its documentation.
Reviewing and controlling edits You want an editor-based place to inspect changes, or to separate codebase questions from editing where the tool supports it. Cursor documents Ask and Manual modes; check current labels and behavior. You are comfortable reviewing the proposed or completed changes in your editor or through your usual command-line workflow. Review controls are product-specific, not established by the terminal format itself.
Running commands and iterating You want the agent to invoke terminal commands without leaving the IDE; Cursor says its Agent can run them and fix errors. Your work is already organized around shell commands, scripts, or command-line checks. Confirm which commands the agent can run and how it handles permission or approval in the chosen tool.
Task fit You value having code navigation and agent interaction close together. You value making the command line the main place to direct the agent.

These are decision criteria, not results from a controlled comparison of the two interfaces. Before committing to a workflow, try a representative task from your own work and check whether you can understand the context the agent used, inspect every change, and run the checks you care about.

Why task-specific results do not settle the interface question

A 2026 arXiv paper, Comparing AI Coding Agents: A Task-Stratified Analysis of Pull Request Acceptance, reports an analysis of 7,156 pull requests. Its abstract summary says Claude Code led in documentation tasks at 92.3% and feature tasks at 72.6%, while Cursor led in fix tasks at 80.4%: paper listing on arXiv.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures are reported from the paper’s abstract summary, not a direct test of IDE versus terminal interaction. They should not be read as general capability scores or a forecast of an individual developer’s results. The summary alone does not provide enough detail to assess the study’s task definitions and sample construction, and the reported differences do not establish that one interface is better across kinds of work.

You can combine the surfaces

If you like reviewing code in an IDE but prefer directing some agent work from a shell, you do not necessarily need to choose one mode of interaction permanently. Cursor’s documented IDE Agent and CLI are examples of one product exposing both surfaces. Whether combining them is useful depends on the task and on the controls each interface provides.
