A phone speaker may sound quiet because its volume is set too low, audio is routed to a connected device, an opening is blocked, or a call or app is producing poor sound. If several kinds of audio remain quiet or distorted after basic checks, the phone may need manufacturer support or repair. Start by identifying which sounds are affected, then try the reversible fixes first.
First, find out what sounds quiet
Test a phone call, a recording or video stored on the phone, and media from a different app. Notice whether the problem affects calls only, one app or file, or every sound source. This distinction helps narrow the cause: a single recording or app may be the issue, while consistently poor sound across sources points to a phone setting, obstruction, software issue, or hardware fault.

For Pixel phones, Google recommends testing two or three songs or videos from different apps. If only some sound distorted, the files may be responsible; if all do, Google advises contacting Pixel support. The same comparison is a useful first check on other phones, though the support and diagnostic options differ by manufacturer.

- Play the affected sound and adjust its volume. Use the phone’s volume buttons while media is playing, or while you are on the call you cannot hear well. Phones may have separate controls for media, calls, alarms, and ringtones, so changing one does not necessarily change another.
- Check audio routing. Disconnect Bluetooth headphones, speakers, or other paired audio devices and unplug any wired accessory. Sound may be playing somewhere other than the phone’s own speaker.
- For a call, test speakerphone both ways. Switch speakerphone on and then off to see whether the problem changes. This helps distinguish trouble with the call’s listening path from a problem affecting other phone audio.
Rule out a case or blocked opening
Remove the case, protective film, skin, or accessory temporarily, especially if it touches or overlaps a speaker opening. Check the speaker grille for visible dirt or blockage; on an iPhone, check the receiver opening as well. Test the sound again with the phone uncovered.

Clean only as the phone maker advises
If an opening is visibly dirty, use the cleaning method specified for the exact phone. Apple advises cleaning an iPhone speaker or receiver opening with a clean, dry, small soft-bristled brush. Google’s Pixel guidance recommends a soft, lint-free cloth for dirty speaker and microphone areas. These methods are device-specific: do not assume they apply to every phone, and do not introduce liquids or tools the manufacturer has not recommended.
Restart the phone and check call conditions
Restart the phone, then test more than one sound source again. If the problem is limited to calls, look at the signal indicator and try calling from a location with stronger reception. Weak signal or network conditions can affect how a call sounds even when media playback is normal. Google also suggests toggling Wi-Fi as part of call troubleshooting and waiting until a moving vehicle has stopped before making a call.

Samsung notes that on some Galaxy phones, a substantial change in ambient pressure can temporarily make the speaker sound quiet, crackly, or distorted; the pressure will usually equalize over time. This is a model-dependent possibility, not a general explanation for every phone. Do not apply a SIM-tray procedure found in model-specific advice to a different device.
Consider accessibility settings and built-in diagnostics
Some settings can make sound easier to hear, but they do not repair a faulty speaker. On Pixel, Adaptive Sound and the Sound Amplifier accessibility feature are available options. Sound Amplifier includes controls for boosting quiet sounds and adjusting high and low frequencies. Availability and menu names vary by device and software version.

Samsung users can run speaker diagnostics in Samsung Members. On iPhone, Apple advises checking the Ringtone and Alerts slider; if moving it produces no sound or the speaker button is dimmed, service may be needed. Use the diagnostics provided for your own model rather than relying on instructions for another phone.
