But slowness alone does not prove an app is at fault. Storage limits, startup apps, outdated software, malware, and aging hardware can cause similar symptoms, and more than one problem may be involved.
How can app code slow down a PC?
Every running program competes for finite system resources. An app may use more CPU than its task warrants, repeatedly read or write to disk, consume memory, or continue doing work after you have minimized it. If that activity coincides with the slowdown, the process may be the immediate bottleneck even if the computer itself is functioning normally.

Background work is not automatically a problem: apps may need to sync, update, or perform other tasks. The clue is activity that is unnecessary or disproportionate to what the app is supposed to be doing. Microsoft’s guidance for app developers says background apps should avoid unnecessary resource use and CPU wake-ups, and describes tracing CPU activity to identify where work occurs in an app’s code (Microsoft Learn: CPU analysis).

A process can be the proximate cause of a slowdown without proving that the software is defective; the evidence to look for is whether its activity tracks the symptoms.

What should you check while the PC is slow?
Start with the symptom, not a guess
Open Task Manager while the slowdown is happening and inspect its process and resource views. Look for a process that is unexpectedly busy relative to your current workload, and note which resource appears constrained. A process that rises at the same time the PC becomes sluggish is a useful lead, but a single observation does not establish the cause.
Pay attention to timing as well as usage: does the problem happen just after startup, only while using one app, or when the computer appears idle? These patterns help narrow the investigation. Microsoft’s process-level investigation guidance discusses examining resource consumption, but its detailed high-CPU troubleshooting procedure is for Windows Server, not a source of consumer-PC thresholds (Microsoft Learn: Troubleshoot high CPU usage).
Check the resource that is actually under pressure
CPU is only one possibility. A slowdown can involve memory, disk, network activity, or other operating-system resources. Microsoft Research describes investigating anomalies across resources including CPU, disk, network, OS handles, file descriptors, and system threads (Basu, Dunagan, and Smith, Microsoft Research technical report). That work provides useful diagnostic context, but it is preliminary historical research—not a current estimate of how often bad code causes slow PCs.

- CPU activity: consider whether an app is repeatedly doing work or keeping a processor busy.
- Disk activity: consider whether reads and writes are coinciding with delays.
- Memory pressure: consider whether running apps together are exhausting available memory.
- Network activity: consider whether an app’s transfers are interfering with the task you are trying to do.
These are clues, not proof of a software defect. Match what you observe to when the lag occurs, and avoid assuming that high activity is harmful if the app is performing work you requested.
How do you tell an app problem from other common causes?
Microsoft’s consumer guidance lists several possible contributors to slow Windows performance, including limited storage, startup apps, outdated software, malware, and hardware that no longer meets current performance needs (Microsoft Support: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows). Use the pattern of the problem to decide what to investigate:
- Slow mostly during startup: check which apps launch automatically and whether the delay continues after startup activity settles.
- Slow in one app: observe that app’s resource use while reproducing the lag, then compare with the PC’s behavior when it is closed.
- Slow even when apparently idle: look for background activity and check whether a scan, update, or other task is running.
- Slow across many tasks: check storage and overall hardware capability as well as running processes; software troubleshooting may not overcome a hardware limitation.
These causes can overlap. For example, a busy app and low available storage can both contribute, so do not stop at the first plausible explanation.

When should you check for malware?
If an unfamiliar process is active, activity remains unexplained, or you have other reason to suspect an infection, run a scan with Windows Security. Microsoft notes that malware can consume CPU and disk resources, making it one possible source of performance problems (Microsoft Support: Stay protected with Windows Security).

High resource use by itself does not show that a process is malware. Do not disable security software just because it uses resources. Microsoft also recommends downloading programs from their official vendor and checking installation choices for bundled software (Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance).

For deeper diagnosis, developers and experienced users can capture a performance trace with Windows Performance Recorder and inspect it in Windows Performance Analyzer. Microsoft’s app-performance guidance describes establishing idle conditions, recording a short trace, and examining CPU activity and process stacks to see where background work is occurring (Microsoft Learn: CPU analysis). This is a technical workflow, not a necessary first step for every home user; begin with Task Manager and the symptom pattern unless you need to identify work inside an app.

Should you upgrade the PC or replace an app?
Not until you have evidence of the bottleneck. If one process’s activity consistently coincides with the lag, investigate that app’s settings, updates, or behavior. If the symptoms point instead to limited storage, memory, or older hardware, address that constraint. Microsoft cautions that older hardware may not benefit substantially from software troubleshooting steps, but the available guidance does not support a hardware purchase for every slow PC.
A performance complaint alone cannot distinguish inefficient app code from malware, a Windows configuration issue, or hardware limits. Observe the resource activity during the slowdown, connect it to the timing of the symptom, and then investigate the cause that the evidence supports.
