If the phone is already hot, reduce its workload and let it cool; settings changes alone cannot safely cool a device under heavy load.
1. Find what is using the battery before changing settings
Battery-use screens help distinguish an app that is draining power from screen time, weak signal, or other system activity. Check recent usage first, then change only the settings tied to the likely cause.

iPhone
Open Settings > Battery to review daily usage and app or system activity. Apple’s view can identify background activity, notifications, and poor mobile coverage or low signal as contributors. If the drain started after an iOS update, background work may temporarily increase usage; check again after a few days before treating it as a lasting problem. Apple’s battery-use guidance

Google Pixel
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and look for apps with unusually high use. On Pixel 6 and later, Battery diagnostics includes a “Battery draining too quickly” check; available steps can differ by Android version. Google Pixel battery-use and diagnostics guidance

Review background activity in Device care. Samsung’s menu labels can vary by Galaxy model and software version, and its cited recommendations are for the United States. Samsung Galaxy battery guidance
2. Reduce screen power use
The display is a practical first setting to adjust because brightness and time spent with the screen on directly affect how much the phone has to power.
- Lower brightness. Use the brightness slider or enable adaptive/automatic brightness so the display does not stay brighter than needed. Apple and Google both recommend reducing brightness.
- Shorten screen-on time. On Android, reduce the screen timeout; Apple recommends enabling Auto-Lock under Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. Menu names may vary by version.
- Consider optional display features. Google lists turning off Always-on Display and, on supported Pixel models, Smooth Display as possible battery-saving steps. These controls are not available on every phone.

3. Limit background use selectively
If one app is responsible for unusual background use, reduce its activity or use it less often rather than restricting every app. Broad restrictions can delay notifications or affect services you rely on.
Pixel and other Android phones
Google recommends leaving app battery usage set to Optimized and keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on. Change background access only for apps your battery-use screen identifies as a problem. Google’s exact controls can vary by Android version and device.
iPhone
Use the activity details in Settings > Battery to see whether an app’s background activity or notifications line up with the drain. Low Power Mode can reduce or disable some features, including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and visual effects; turn it on when you need to extend runtime, not as a substitute for identifying a persistent cause. 4. Turn off connections only when you do not need them
Hotspots and tethering can use substantial power. Turn them off when you are finished sharing a connection. Samsung also recommends switching off unused Wi-Fi, Location, or Bluetooth features; do not disable a service that you actively need.

- On supported iPhones, use 5G Auto rather than forcing 5G continuously, following Apple’s guidance.
- Use Airplane Mode only when you do not need a mobile connection. It is not a general-purpose battery setting if you need calls, messages, or mobile data.

Long navigation, video calls, camera recording, streaming, gaming, and heavy use while charging can make a phone warm. Direct sun, enclosed spaces, and poor ventilation can add to the problem. A hot battery also drains faster: Google states, “Your battery will drain much faster when it’s hot, even if you’re not using it.”

- Stop demanding tasks such as gaming, video streaming, extended navigation, or camera recording.
- If the phone is too hot while charging, disconnect it from power.
- Move it out of direct sunlight or an enclosed space to a cooler location, and do not use it until it cools.
- Resume normal use after it has cooled. Do not use a freezer, ice, or other abrupt cooling method.
Some warmth during fast charging, gaming, or streaming can be normal. Google advises contacting Pixel support if the phone continues to shut down; Samsung likewise advises stopping use and allowing a severely overheated device to cool. 6. Decide whether the drain is temporary or needs attention
A recent update or initial setup can lead to temporary background work and higher battery use. If the timing matches, wait a few days and check battery usage again. If the pattern persists, use the phone’s battery diagnostics or support rather than assuming a setting is to blame.

Apple notes that rechargeable batteries have limited lifespans and may eventually need replacement.
