“Outlook Copilot” usually means Copilot Chat opened inside Outlook, not a separate Outlook product. Eligible work or school users can access that chat with or without the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on; the main difference is whether it can ground answers in the organization’s work content. Without the add-on, Outlook Chat has more limited work-data grounding and can use web information. With the add-on, it can use work content the user is permitted to access, such as emails, meetings, chats, and files. Your account, license, organization settings, Outlook client, market, and Microsoft service conditions all affect what appears.
What do “Outlook Copilot” and “Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat” mean?
They are overlapping names for experiences, not two standalone Outlook products to choose between. Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is the broader chat experience; it can appear inside Outlook so you can use chat alongside your inbox. Microsoft says the chat is integrated into Outlook for contextual information and actions, but its available context depends on your account and license.

Microsoft’s support article, Chat with Copilot in Outlook, gives examples of asking about inbox or calendar information and working with messages. Those examples describe documented scenarios, not a guarantee that every feature is enabled for every user or Outlook client.
What is the difference with and without the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on?
For eligible business or school accounts, the add-on chiefly expands what Copilot Chat can use as work context. Microsoft’s comparison distinguishes web-grounded chat and limited data access without the add-on from work-grounded responses with it. A license does not grant access to content the user otherwise cannot access.

| What to compare | Copilot Chat without the add-on | Copilot Chat with the add-on |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook access | Available to eligible users, subject to account, subscription, and organization conditions. | Available; the add-on expands work-grounded capabilities. |
| Work grounding | Microsoft describes limited data in Outlook and web-grounded chat; it does not independently ground the chat in the organization’s full work content. | Can use accessible work content such as meetings, emails, chats, and files. |
| Access across Microsoft 365 apps | Depends on the user’s subscription and the experience indicated by the account label. | Microsoft describes broader Copilot access; exact capabilities still depend on current plan and service conditions. |
| Service access | Standard access can vary with capacity and time of day. | Priority access is designed for faster, more consistent access, subject to service availability. |
Microsoft explains the business distinction in How Copilot Chat works with and without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Its Microsoft 365 apps guidance, last updated April 2026, also says eligible subscribers can use Outlook Chat and describes the license distinction. Access and features can change, so check the current terms for your account rather than assuming one universal plan or availability.
What can Copilot Chat do inside Outlook?
Microsoft documents Outlook scenarios that include summarizing email threads, drafting messages, asking questions about inbox and calendar information, scheduling, email triage, creating rules, and preparing for meetings. For example, Microsoft’s support material offers prompts such as “When is my next 1:1 meeting with /name?” and “Summarize my emails from the last week related to [project or customer name].” These are examples of possible requests, not evidence that every user has every capability.

Microsoft’s Copilot in Outlook FAQ, last updated February 2026, documents important limits: Outlook Copilot scenarios are limited to the primary mailbox; it cannot access S/MIME or Double Key Encryption messages; and some features do not support IRM or certain Microsoft Information Protection-labeled messages. Review generated summaries, drafts, and other responses before relying on them or sending them.
How can you check which Copilot experience you have?
- Sign in to Microsoft 365 with the work or school account you use in Outlook.
- Open your account or profile area and inspect the label shown under your name.
- Compare the label with Microsoft’s license guidance. Documented labels include “Copilot Chat (Basic),” “M365 Copilot (Basic),” and “M365 Copilot (Premium)”; Microsoft says the label indicates access and license status.
If the expected experience is missing, the label is a useful first check, but access may also depend on your organization’s settings, the client you are using, market availability, and service conditions. Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to confirm the account’s assigned license and tenant configuration.

Personal Microsoft accounts follow qualifying personal-subscription rules; the work-or-school add-on comparison above should not be applied to them automatically. Microsoft describes the different account contexts in Get started with Microsoft Copilot Chat and its license guidance.

If you need chat alongside Outlook and have an eligible work or school account, start with the Copilot Chat experience available to you. If you need answers grounded in a wider range of work material—such as meetings, emails, chats, and files—the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on is the relevant distinction to check with your administrator. Neither label guarantees access to every Outlook feature: client, account, license, permissions, admin controls, and service availability still matter.
Do not treat experimental inbox-management features as standard availability. Microsoft documents a separate Frontier experience with client and regional restrictions on its Frontier inbox-management page.
