A crack may be limited to a removable screen protector, but appearance alone cannot confirm that the phone’s display underneath is undamaged. A normal picture and responsive touch make protector-only damage possible—not certain. Black or ink-like marks, unusual colors, persistent lines, or touch failure after an impact are reasons to seek a professional assessment.
Is the crack in the protector or the phone’s display?
A separate tempered-glass protector sits above the phone’s own screen. If only that top layer is cracked, replacing it may be all that is needed. Damage to the display itself is different: the outer glass, the image-producing panel, or both may be affected.

A crack that seems confined to a separate protector, while the image looks normal and touch works, is consistent with protector-only damage. It is not proof. Protectors can be transparent and closely fitted, and there is no universal at-home visual test that rules out damage underneath. A fingernail test is not a reliable diagnosis.

Samsung distinguishes cracks in display glass from damage to the internal panel. The clues below can help you describe what you see, but they cannot establish a diagnosis remotely.

What signs can point to internal display damage?
- Black or ink-like spots: Samsung says round black spots or ink-like marks can indicate that pressure or impact damaged the internal display panel, even if the outer glass is not cracked. Such marks may spread and usually require display repair. Samsung’s display-damage guidance explains these symptoms.
- Lines or abnormal colors: Black lines or unusual colors can follow an impact, including near the edges; vertical or horizontal lines may cross the display. These can be signs of internal damage rather than a crack in a separate protector.
- Touch problems: Areas that do not respond to touch are another reason to get the phone checked. A protector crack alone does not establish the cause of a touch issue.
- A crack in the glass: Direct impact can crack or shatter display glass. A visible crack therefore does not, by itself, tell you whether the panel beneath it is also damaged.
Samsung says internal marks can spread and typically need repair. An inspection by a service professional is needed to determine the repair method; the signs above are clues, not a guarantee about which part has failed.
Special case: Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip main screens
Do not peel off the installed main-screen protector on a Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip to check what is underneath. Samsung warns that removing this dedicated film or applying an unauthorized replacement can damage the screen or cause touch problems. Bubbles or lines in the film can also be mistaken for display damage. Contact a Samsung service center about main-screen protector replacement rather than removing or replacing it yourself. Samsung Electronics Service Korea provides foldable-screen and repair guidance; service procedures and eligibility may vary by region.

What to do after you notice a crack, line, or touch issue
- Back up the phone if it is usable and stable. Save important data before arranging service, if you can do so safely.
- Observe without pressing or flexing the screen. Under good light, note where the crack or mark appears and whether it changes with the displayed image. Check whether touch responds across the screen, without pressing hard, bending the phone, or picking at chipped material. These observations may help explain the problem, but they are not diagnostic tests.
- Arrange an assessment when there are internal symptoms or doubt. Black or ink-like areas, persistent lines, unusual colors, touch failure, or uncertainty after impact justify contacting the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Samsung recommends professional inspection for display damage.
- For iPhone display work, choose a qualified repair route. Apple says that, for most customers, a professional repair provider with certified technicians using genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable option. - Ask for a model-specific quote before approving work. The provider should confirm what is damaged, what repair is available, and the cost for your exact phone and location.
How to compare repair options
Repair scope and eligibility depend on the phone’s make and model, the type and extent of damage, and local service availability. Samsung describes both full-display replacement and component-level repair for eligible models and damage conditions; the service center determines which option applies. Cost can also vary by model and insurance coverage, so a general price estimate may not reflect your case.

Can a screen protector fix a damaged display?
No. A replacement tempered-glass protector is appropriate only when you are replacing a protector that is itself damaged; it cannot repair a cracked phone display, internal spots, lines, or touch failure. If you confirm that a non-foldable phone’s separate protector is cracked, choose a protector made for the exact phone model. Handle chipped edges carefully and do not flex or press the screen while removing it. If you cannot tell whether the phone’s display is intact, arrange an assessment instead of treating a new protector as a fix.
