Yes, a GMKtec mini PC can run local large language models, but “GMKtec” covers very different hardware. The exact model, memory capacity, model quantization, context length and runtime determine what will load and how quickly it responds. GMKtec’s published EVO-X2 results offer a useful reference—not an independent benchmark or a substitute for testing the specific system.
What “running locally” means
With local inference, the model runs on the mini PC rather than sending prompts to a remote service. A launcher that lists familiar AI models does not prove they run on the device. PCWorld found that Cherry AI on the configuration it reviewed for the GMKtec K13 acted as an interface to cloud services, including services associated with Doubao, Qwen and DeepSeek. To establish that a test is genuinely local, identify the runtime and model artifact, then repeat the test with the network disconnected. If the application stops working offline, it may depend on a remote service. A model’s name in a launcher is not enough to establish where inference happens.

GMKtec lists the EVO-X2 with an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and publishes model compatibility information for 64GB, 96GB and 128GB configurations. Its table shows that supported models vary by memory option. For the 128GB configuration, the company lists these average generation speeds:

“Supported” or “loads” also does not mean a model will feel responsive. The listed speed can’t be compared fairly without knowing factors such as quantization, context length, runtime and measurement procedure. A figure in tokens per second describes generation speed; it does not, by itself, tell you how quickly a model processes a long prompt.

How to judge whether a model will fit and feel usable
Memory capacity is a central constraint for local models, and a result for one configuration should not be generalized to the whole product line. For example, TechRadar describes the GMKtec K13’s fixed 16GB memory as a limitation for larger memory-hungry models. - Memory: Confirm the installed capacity and whether memory is upgradeable or shared with graphics. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact configuration.
- Model and quantization: Identify the precise model variant and quantization. A model name alone does not specify its memory requirements.
- Context length: Longer context can increase memory use. A model that loads with a short context may not fit under a larger workload.
- Runtime support: Confirm that the runtime supports the system’s processor and graphics or NPU hardware on your operating system.
- Measured workload: Record prompt processing and token generation separately, along with runtime, settings and model artifact. “It runs” and “it is comfortable to use” are different claims.
Software support can change the result
Hardware capability is only part of the experience. In its EVO-X3 review, TechRadar tested a 128GB system across local chat, reasoning, image recognition, image generation, transcription and coding. The reviewer reported that smaller language models began responding quickly while larger ones were slower. The review also described GMKtec’s Claw environment and installers for LM Studio and Ollama. That review also reported a specific software mismatch at the time: Herdsman detected the NPU, but its then-current runtime manifests did not support the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. The reviewer used Lemonade and the Ryzen AI runtime as a workaround. This is a dated observation about that setup, not proof of a current or universal limitation. Check current runtime support for the exact operating system and hardware before choosing a workflow.

What to record in a useful test
A meaningful report should let readers distinguish a hardware result from a software or configuration issue. Record the exact GMKtec model and memory configuration, operating system, runtime version, model artifact and quantization, context length, and network status. For speed figures, explain the workload and settings, and separate prompt processing from generation. Include noise, power use and thermal behavior only if you measured them.
For a like-for-like comparison with another mini PC, use the same model artifact, quantization, context and runtime where possible. Report the system configuration and measurement conditions alongside every speed figure. A single TOPS rating does not establish how well a machine will run a particular language model.
