How to Stop WebView2 Asking to Access the Internet

A WebView2 firewall alert may come from another Windows app, not Edge. Identify that app and decide whether its online features need network access before allowing it.

If a firewall asks whether to let WebView2 access the internet, identify the app that is using it before choosing Allow or Block. WebView2 is a shared component for displaying web content inside Windows apps, so the prompt does not necessarily come from the standalone Edge browser. Allow it only when the host app is trusted, needs online features, and the requested network profile is appropriate; otherwise, block it and investigate the app.

Why WebView2 wants network access

Microsoft WebView2 lets Windows applications show web content using the Edge rendering engine. Microsoft lists Widgets, Teams, Office, Outlook, Weather, and other apps among its users. A firewall prompt mentioning WebView2 may therefore relate to an app you just opened, rather than to browsing in Edge. Microsoft’s WebView2 overview explains the runtime and its role in host applications.

The exact prompt matters: it could come from Windows Defender Firewall, a third-party firewall, or another security notice. The wording alone does not establish which app initiated a connection or what destination it is contacting.

Decide whether to allow or block it

Use the app shown in the alert, its publisher, and what you were doing when it appeared to make the decision. Consider these factors together:

  • Is the host app familiar and trusted? A WebView2 entry may be used by a legitimate app, but the runtime name by itself does not verify the app making the request.
  • Does the app need the internet for a feature you use? Sign-in, web-based content, and other app features may need network access. Blocking it can leave those features unavailable.
  • Which network profile is involved? Do not automatically allow access on both private and public networks. Choose only the profile appropriate to your situation and the app’s needs.
  • Is the app unfamiliar or unnecessary? Block the request while you check the app and its publisher. Do not treat a prompt as proof of malware, but do not approve an unknown request just because it names WebView2.

Microsoft’s WebView2 security guidance recommends considering both the runtime and the host executable and validating the endpoints the application requires. The app developer’s documentation or support information is the appropriate place to confirm what its features need.

What to do when the prompt appears

  1. Read the full alert. Note the displayed app or publisher, the firewall or security product, and whether it identifies a private or public network.
  2. Connect it to an app. Consider which application you opened or were using immediately before the alert appeared. WebView2 may be running inside that app.
  3. Check whether its online feature is needed. If you trust the host app and want a feature that depends on its online services, allow only the access and network profile the prompt offers that you actually need.
  4. Block and investigate if you cannot verify it. If the app or publisher is unfamiliar, or the app does not need internet access, deny the request. Check the app’s identity and source before changing the decision.
  5. Use the firewall that issued the alert. If you need to change a decision later, use that product’s app or firewall rules. The exact menu path differs by Windows release and security product, so there is no reliable universal click sequence.

If you blocked it and an app feature stopped working

A blocked connection can affect an app’s web-based features. If you trust the app and need the feature, review the firewall rule for the host app and WebView2 rather than creating a broad exception for everything. Microsoft advises allowing required runtime and host executables and the endpoints an app needs; those endpoints depend on the application.

Microsoft also warns that security products can interfere with WebView2 and cause blank views, initialization failures, or crashes. Its guidance says not to modify the default access-control permissions on WebView2 runtime folders. Do not delete, quarantine, replace, or alter runtime files, and do not disable security protections or add broad exclusions as a shortcut. See Microsoft’s guidance on preventing security tools from blocking WebView2 apps.

Why Edge settings and Windows privacy settings may not help

Edge browser policies are not a general way to control embedded WebView2 instances. Microsoft notes that policies applying only to the Edge browser generally do not affect WebView2, and unsupported policies can break app features. The WebView2 policy reference documents WebView2-specific controls, but it does not establish a universal consumer setting that dismisses firewall prompts while preserving every host app’s internet features.

Windows diagnostic-data settings are separate from firewall permissions. Microsoft documents optional WebView2 diagnostic data as following the Windows diagnostic-data setting on Windows 10 and Windows 11; that setting is not described as a control for an app’s internet access. Changing it should not be expected to stop a firewall prompt. See Microsoft’s WebView2 diagnostic-log documentation.
