Ethereum Slashing: The Three Validator Offenses That Trigger It

Ethereum slashing applies to three specific conflicting signed messages—not simply going offline. Here’s how double proposals, double votes, and surround votes differ, and why losses vary.

Ethereum validators can be slashed for three specific kinds of conflicting signed messages: proposing two different blocks for the same slot, double-voting, or making an attestation that surrounds another. Simply going offline or missing votes is not slashing. A slash forces a validator out and destroys some stake; the total loss varies with protocol rules and how many other validators are slashed around the same time.

What are Ethereum’s three slashing conditions?

The conditions apply to signed validator messages, not merely to a validator’s opinion about which chain should win. Two involve attestations; the third involves block proposals.

Condition Message involved Slashable conflict
Double proposal Block proposal Two different blocks signed for the same slot
Double vote Attestation Two votes that meet the protocol’s conflicting-target rule
Surround vote Attestation One attestation’s source and target epochs enclose another’s in the slashable direction

Ethereum.org describes these protocol conditions in its proof-of-stake rewards and penalties guide. A vote that differs from the block ultimately chosen by fork choice is not automatically slashable; the signed messages must satisfy a specific conflict rule.

How does each slashing condition work?

1. Double proposal: two blocks for one slot

A validator selected to propose a block must not sign two different blocks for the same slot. Those conflicting signed proposals constitute a double proposal. This is narrower than proposing a block that loses fork choice: a losing proposal by itself is not the same offense.

2. Double vote: conflicting attestations

Attesters must not sign two attestations that satisfy the protocol’s double-vote condition. The simple intuition is that one validator should not vote for competing versions of reality in the same epoch context. That shorthand is not a rule that every pair of different votes—or every vote later absent from the canonical chain—is slashable. The protocol evaluates the attestation data and its target epoch.

The Ethereum Foundation’s 2020 incentives explainer describes the risk as voting for different blocks during the same epoch. That is useful background, while the current protocol predicate is the authority for whether particular signed attestations conflict: Ethereum Foundation, “Validated, staking on eth2: #1 – Incentives”.

3. Surround vote: nested source and target epochs

Attestations carry source and target checkpoint epochs. A surround vote occurs when one attestation encloses another’s source-to-target epoch interval in the direction defined by the protocol. In plain terms, the pair asserts incompatible histories across nested ranges of checkpoints. The ordering matters: not every pair of attestations with different epochs is a surround vote.

Ethereum.org summarizes the offense as attesting to a block that “surrounds” another. Its explanation and the protocol rules distinguish that specific nesting relationship from ordinary disagreement about a fork.

What happens when a validator is slashed?

Slashing imposes a stake penalty and starts the validator’s forced exit from the active set. Ethereum.org’s guide, last updated in 2026, illustrates the current mechanics for a 32 ETH validator: an immediate 0.0078125 ETH penalty, a removal period described as 36 days, and a correlation penalty assessed around day 18. These are documentation examples for that protocol context, not a guaranteed total loss for every validator or future protocol version.

The correlation penalty is why the consequences can differ sharply. It depends on the amount of other stake slashed during the surrounding period: an isolated slash can cost much less than a slash coinciding with many others. The final amount therefore is not one fixed figure that can be applied to every event. For current operational details, consult the Ethereum.org guide and the active Ethereum consensus specifications, which govern protocol behavior and can change.

Can an Ethereum validator be slashed for going offline?

No—not for ordinary missed participation alone. A missed source or target vote can mean a reward is not earned and may incur a penalty, but it is distinct from the three slashable acts above. Ethereum.org also describes an inactivity leak, a separate mechanism that begins when the chain has failed to finalize for more than four epochs; it is intended to restore conditions for finality, not to classify offline behavior as one of the slashing offenses. See the Ethereum proof-of-stake FAQ for related participation questions.

Why can backup infrastructure create slashing risk?

Redundancy is useful only if it prevents duplicate signing. If a primary and backup system can both control the same validator key and both issue messages, they may sign conflicting proposals or attestations even when the operator has no intent to attack Ethereum. The Ethereum Foundation notes that a validator following the protocol correctly does not emit slashable votes in normal operation, while bugs and accidents can produce slashable messages.

  • Design failover so only one signer can issue messages for a validator at a time.
  • Do not assume that labeling one machine “backup” prevents it from signing if it remains active with access to the key.
  • Treat duplicate signing as a safety failure to prevent, not as a harmless consequence of redundancy.

The operational principle is simple: reliability mechanisms must preserve a single active signing authority for each validator’s messages.
