What’s the difference between a phone cooler and a cooling fan?
“Phone cooler” can mean either an airflow-only fan accessory or a thermoelectric cooler. The distinction matters: a fan moves ambient air around the phone, while a TEC uses electrical power to transfer heat away from its contact plate. Many TEC products also have a fan to carry heat away from the plate’s hot side, so they combine both mechanisms.

Does a phone cooler actually help with gaming?
It can help manage heat, but cooler surface temperatures do not automatically mean a higher frame rate. Under sustained heat, a phone may reduce processor speed to stay within thermal limits, which can hurt performance in interactive workloads. The 2017 University of Michigan research by Lee, Kim, and Shin describes this throttling problem and reports that its adaptive thermoelectric design reduced performance loss to 1.8%, compared with 19.2% without TEC, at a cooling-power cost of 0.2 W. Those figures came from that design and its mobile benchmarks—not from a retail clip-on cooler or a universal gaming test. Read the 2017 paper.

What a gaming-specific experiment found
A June 2026 article in JASIEK tested a Peltier cooler during Mobile Legends: Bang Bang on two mid-range phones, Xiaomi and Infinix. The authors tested Standard and HD graphics settings in 10-, 15-, and 20-minute sessions, repeating each condition 30 times. They reported average temperature drops in every tested phone-and-setting combination, but the FPS changes varied substantially:

These are the article’s reported results for its tested phones and conditions, not a forecast for another phone or game. The wide difference in FPS changes is why a cooler should not be treated as a guaranteed performance upgrade. Read the JASIEK study.
Which is better: a phone fan or a Peltier cooler?
If your priority is actively lowering surface temperature during sustained play, a TEC/Peltier cooler has the stronger mechanism: it pumps heat rather than relying only on ambient airflow. But the available evidence does not establish a universal winner for gaming performance. The gaming experiment compared a Peltier cooler with its no-cooler condition; it did not compare retail TEC and fan-only accessories under the same phones, game, ambient conditions, and session lengths.

So choose based on what you need: consider a TEC cooler when active cooling is the priority and you accept the power and fit requirements. Consider a fan-only accessory if airflow is what you want and you do not need evidence of a particular temperature or FPS gain. If you are buying a phone, an integrated fan may be convenient, but assess the complete device rather than assuming the fan alone makes it a better gaming phone.
What to check before buying an external cooler
- Exact phone compatibility: Check the supported models, attachment method, and whether a case must be removed. A cooler designed for one phone should not be assumed to fit another.
- Contact and clearance: Confirm that the plate or airflow area aligns with the phone as intended, and that the clip leaves the buttons, cameras, and ports usable.
- Power: Check whether the cooler runs from the phone or needs a separate supply. For example, ASUS lists phone-powered and externally powered TEC modes for AeroActive Cooler 6, while Cooler Master says its Cryo Phone Cooler requires a 9V DC power supply.
- Comfort and setup: Consider added bulk, grip, mounting options, cable routing, and the cooler’s noise guidance before committing to long sessions.
- Condensation guidance: ASUS warns that excessive cooling could create condensation and says AeroActive Cooler 6 includes humidity-sensor protection. Follow the instructions for the specific cooler you buy.
Examples of the different designs
ASUS describes AeroActive Cooler 6 as an external accessory for the ROG Phone 6 series, not as a universal phone cooler. ASUS reports up to 25°C lower surface temperature near the CPU in an ASUS lab comparison of a ROG Phone 6 with and without the accessory; that is a manufacturer-reported, model-specific maximum, not an independent result or a promised reduction for other phones. For an integrated approach, OPPO’s K13 Turbo Series pairs an active fan with vapor-chamber and graphite heat-spreading layers. In its India newsroom announcement, OPPO reports a 2–4°C temperature drop under bright, high-load outdoor conditions and says temperatures stayed below 43°C for 84% of users in the described use.
