It is an actively documented WebDriver automation project that can target major browsers. PhantomJS can still render pages to screenshots, but its development is suspended and its GitHub repository is archived and read-only. Keep it mainly for maintaining a legacy script or reproducing an older rendering environment—not as the default for new work.
That recommendation follows the projects’ documented status and design, not a head-to-head performance test. Neither tool can guarantee that a screenshot captures a page’s asynchronous content at the right moment: you must wait for the page state that matters to your use case.

How PhantomJS and Selenium differ
| Question | PhantomJS | Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A scriptable headless browser based on QtWebKit, with a JavaScript API. | A browser automation project centered on WebDriver; it operates a browser you select rather than being a single browser. |
| Project status | Its official site says development is suspended. Its GitHub repository is archived and read-only; the repository identifies 2.1 as the latest stable release. | Its documentation describes WebDriver support across major browsers and documents Selenium Manager and Grid. |
| Screenshot capability | Its documentation demonstrates loading a page, evaluating page JavaScript and saving a rendered screenshot. It also documents viewport dimensions and a clip rectangle. | WebDriver provides screenshot capture for the active browsing context. |
| Browser choice | Uses its bundled WebKit-based browser; it is not a way to select among current major browser engines. | Lets you automate a selected supported browser, which can better match the browser engine you need to represent. |
| Setup and operation | The bundled-browser approach made its historical scripts relatively straightforward, but the project’s suspended and archived status is a substantial maintenance concern. | Requires running a browser and its automation setup. Selenium Manager handles browser and driver management for Selenium bindings; Grid can distribute browser sessions. |
The key distinction is control over the rendering environment. PhantomJS offers one older, fixed browser environment; Selenium gives you a route to automate a chosen browser, with corresponding setup and operational decisions. That does not prove Selenium will produce a more accurate image in every case. Fidelity depends on the browser engine, viewport, page state and capture settings.

When to keep PhantomJS
PhantomJS can make sense when the goal is to preserve or understand an existing script, or when an older WebKit rendering environment is specifically what you need to reproduce. Its documented flow is compact: load a page, optionally evaluate JavaScript, then render to an image. The guide also describes setting the viewport and a clipping rectangle.

Those capabilities do not make it a sound default for a new workflow that must follow current browsers. The official PhantomJS site says, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” The archived repository is read-only, and the command-line documentation identifies 2.1.1 as the latest release. Treat those as historical project details, not signs of current browser support.
When Selenium is the better fit
Choose Selenium when the screenshot should come from a browser you can select and automate, particularly if matching a major browser used by your audience matters. Its WebDriver documentation describes cross-browser automation, and its screenshot API captures the active browsing context.
The trade-off is that Selenium is an automation ecosystem, not a single bundled screenshot utility. You must choose a browser, manage the environment in which it runs, and make capture timing and viewport decisions. Selenium Manager can help with browser and driver management; Selenium Grid is documented for distributing browser sessions when a workflow needs that capability.

Capture a dynamic page with Selenium
A screenshot call captures the page as it exists at that moment. For a page that loads content asynchronously, wait for a meaningful condition—such as a specific element becoming visible—rather than assuming that navigation completion means the page is ready. The condition is site-specific; a generic delay can be too short on a slow response and wasteful on a fast one.
Python example
Install the Selenium Python binding in your environment with python -m pip install selenium, and ensure a supported browser is available. Selenium Manager can manage browser and driver setup for Selenium bindings. This example waits for a page-specific element, sets the window size, and saves a PNG of the active viewport:
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
url = "https://example.com"
ready_selector = "main" # Replace with an element that appears when your page is ready.
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
# Uncomment for a headless run:
# options.add_argument("--headless=new")
with webdriver.Chrome(options=options) as driver:
driver.set_window_size(1440, 1000)
driver.get(url)
WebDriverWait(driver, 30).until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, ready_selector))
)
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
Replace both the URL and readiness selector. A visible main element may only mean the page shell has rendered; for a data-driven page, wait for the actual results, chart, or other content you need in the image. This example captures the current viewport, not necessarily the entire document.

Legacy PhantomJS flow
PhantomJS’s documented approach is to use its JavaScript API to open a page and render it. Its guide also shows evaluating page JavaScript and configuring viewport size and a clip rectangle. Because the project is suspended and its repository archived, treat a PhantomJS script as legacy maintenance rather than a recommendation to install it for new work. The following is the shape of that documented API flow; it assumes an existing PhantomJS 2.x installation:
var page = require('webpage').create();
page.viewportSize = { width: 1440, height: 1000 };
page.open('https://example.com', function (status) {
if (status !== 'success') {
console.error('Could not load the page');
phantom.exit(1);
}
// Replace this with a page-specific readiness check when content is asynchronous.
window.setTimeout(function () {
page.render('page.png');
phantom.exit();
}, 1000);
});
The fixed delay is illustrative, not a reliable readiness test for every site. PhantomJS’s documented ability to evaluate page JavaScript can support a page-specific check, but the exact condition depends on the site. A timeout alone may capture an incomplete page or wait longer than needed.
Choose the browser and screenshot scope deliberately
- Match the rendering engine to the question. If you need to represent a current browser, configure Selenium to use the relevant supported browser rather than assuming a WebKit-based legacy environment will look the same.
- Set the viewport before navigation or capture. Responsive layouts, menus and image sizes can change with viewport dimensions.
- Wait for relevant content. Navigation finishing is not necessarily the same as a client-side application finishing its work. Wait for a selector or state tied to the content you need.
- Decide whether you need the viewport or a full page. The Selenium example captures the active viewport. If the output must include content below the fold, verify that your chosen browser automation method supports the full-page capture behavior you require.
- Validate the image in the target browser. The project documentation establishes capabilities and maintenance status, not comparative visual accuracy. Check the output using the browser engine and page state that matter to your application.
Common screenshot problems and fixes
The screenshot is missing asynchronously loaded content
Cause: The capture ran after navigation but before the relevant client-side work completed. Fix: Wait for a page-specific selector or other observable readiness condition. Increase the timeout only if the condition is correct but the page sometimes needs longer.
Rank #4
The image has the wrong layout or dimensions
Cause: The viewport was not set to the intended size, or responsive behavior changed the page layout. Fix: Set the viewport explicitly before capturing and inspect the screenshot at that size.
Selenium cannot start or control the browser
Cause: The selected browser is unavailable or browser/driver setup is not working in the environment. Fix: Confirm that the browser you selected is installed and usable, then use Selenium Manager’s documented browser and driver management support for the binding. If you distribute sessions, consult the Selenium Grid documentation for that setup.

Cause: PhantomJS uses a legacy QtWebKit-based environment, and its development is suspended. Fix: If current-browser behavior is the requirement, move the workflow to Selenium and select the relevant browser. If reproducing historical output is the requirement, retain the legacy environment and validate its output for the specific page.
Best Value
A capture fails even though the code reaches the screenshot call
Cause: The page may not have loaded successfully, or the readiness condition may not represent the content you expect. Fix: Check the page load and the selector used for the wait, and capture only after the required content is present. Avoid treating a successful screenshot command as proof that the page is complete.

If you need a screenshot without managing browser automation yourself, ScreenshotNeo is an API and MCP server for website screenshots. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets; these cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium take a screenshot of the whole page by default?
No. WebDriver screenshot capture applies to the active browsing context; the Python example above saves the current viewport. Full-page behavior depends on the browser and capture method you use.
Is PhantomJS simply another name for Selenium’s headless mode?
No. PhantomJS is a standalone headless browser based on QtWebKit. Selenium is a browser automation project that can operate a selected browser through WebDriver.
