How to Do Visual Testing for React Apps

Capture meaningful React UI states, compare them with reviewed screenshots, and keep visual tests deterministic in local runs and CI.

Visual testing for a React app means capturing its rendered UI and comparing the screenshot with an approved baseline. Use Playwright Test for page and flow checks, or use Storybook stories to cover component states. A visual difference tells you what changed; review it before deciding whether to update the baseline or fix a regression.

What visual testing catches—and what it does not

A visual test compares rendered pixels, so it can flag changes in layout, spacing, typography, color, and other visible details that functional assertions may not catch. It complements—not replaces—tests for behavior, accessibility, and application logic. A screenshot diff is a review signal, not proof that a change is wrong: intended redesigns should be accepted, while unintended changes should be corrected.

Playwright’s documentation describes screenshot assertions, while Storybook’s visual-testing guidance explains story-based checks. See Playwright visual comparisons and Storybook visual testing.

Choose what to test

Pages and user flows

Use page-level screenshots when the behavior you want to protect spans a route or a sequence of interactions. Select meaningful states rather than taking a single screenshot of every page indiscriminately. Typical candidates include an empty state, loaded content, an error state, and a state reached after an important interaction.

Components and stories

Use Storybook stories when you want focused coverage of component states, such as a button’s disabled appearance or a card with unusually long text. Each story becomes a reproducible input for visual review. Storybook documents Chromatic as a cloud visual-testing integration; evaluate the service’s current terms and requirements before adopting it.

Pick an approach that fits the workflow

Approach Useful when Trade-off
Playwright screenshot assertions Your team already uses browser tests or needs code-managed screenshots for whole pages and flows. Your team manages baselines, consistent rendering environments, and diff review.
Playwright component testing You want browser-rendered component checks and your development server can render React. It adds a browser-driven component setup. Check the current Playwright component testing guidance because implementation details can change.
Storybook with Chromatic Your team already maintains Storybook stories and wants visual review centered on those stories. The documented integration sends the Storybook build and snapshots to Chromatic’s cloud service; assess project requirements and current service terms.
Percy You are considering a hosted visual-testing service and a Storybook workflow. Percy’s comparison is vendor-authored. Verify current capabilities, pricing, and workflow in its product documentation before choosing.

Compare scope, local versus hosted operation, browser coverage, baseline ownership, CI and review integration, and the effort needed to reproduce the rendering environment. The cited documentation establishes workflows, not current prices or plan limits, so confirm those directly with each service.

Set up a Playwright screenshot test

1. Install and configure Playwright Test

If the React project does not already use Playwright Test, install it and follow the prompts to configure the project:

npm init playwright@latest

The setup can add a test directory and a Playwright configuration. Keep the generated configuration appropriate to the project and ensure the app’s development server is started for tests, either through the configuration’s web-server setting or separately in your workflow.

2. Write an assertion for a stable state

For example, create tests/homepage.spec.ts. Replace the example address and selector with those used by your app:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('homepage visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000');
  await page.locator('[data-testid="homepage-ready"]').waitFor();
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});

The readiness selector is optional if navigation itself reliably reaches the state you intend to capture. Prefer an explicit app-ready condition over an arbitrary sleep. Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference screenshot on first use; later runs compare against the saved reference. See the official screenshot assertion documentation for configuration and assertion options.

3. Create and review the baseline

Run the test using the project’s configured test command, commonly:

npx playwright test

Inspect the first screenshot before treating it as the expected appearance. Commit accepted snapshots to version control so a code change and its visual baseline can be reviewed together. When a later run reports a diff, inspect the changed image and decide whether to fix the UI or deliberately accept the visual change. Playwright documents --update-snapshots for updating references; use it only after review:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots

4. Set a deliberate difference tolerance

Exact pixel equality can be too strict when small rendering variations are acceptable. Playwright supports comparison options such as maxDiffPixels. Set a tolerance based on the test’s purpose and review behavior; a permissive threshold can conceal a real regression. Consult the current Playwright options rather than copying a threshold without context.

Make screenshots reproducible

Playwright warns that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Keep the baseline and test runs aligned as closely as practical:

  • Use the same browser project, viewport, and operating-system image for baseline creation and CI runs.
  • Keep browser versions and fonts consistent; a browser or font update may legitimately change pixels.
  • Use stable test data and control animation, clocks, network responses, and other changing inputs where they affect the visible result.
  • Wait for the intended UI state rather than capturing during loading or transition effects.
  • Filter volatile regions—such as timestamps or rotating content—when they are not part of what the test is meant to protect. Playwright documents a custom stylesheet option for hiding unstable elements.

Do not hide a region merely to make a failing test pass if that region matters to users. The filter should exclude only content that cannot be made deterministic and is outside the test’s purpose.

Run visual checks in CI and review changes

Run screenshot checks in the same pull-request workflow as the code they protect. Use a consistent CI image and browser configuration, and keep snapshots in version control. When a diff appears, reviewers should be able to see the code change, the baseline, and the new rendering together. Update references only after the visual change has been judged intentional; otherwise, fix the rendering and rerun the check.

For a one-off capture or an external URL, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; this cURL example saves a WebP capture of the React app:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://your-react-app.example -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshoot noisy or failing visual tests

The screenshot differs on CI but not locally

Check the CI operating system, browser version, viewport, fonts, and headless configuration against the baseline environment. A mismatch can change rendering even when the application code is unchanged. Run baseline creation and comparison in the same controlled environment where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The capture contains a loading, empty, or transitional state

Make the test wait for a reliable app-specific selector or state condition before taking the screenshot. Confirm that test data and network dependencies are available; avoid using a fixed delay as the only readiness check.

Dynamic content causes repeated diffs

Stabilize the underlying data or exclude only the volatile area with a documented screenshot stylesheet. If the changing content is itself important, assert it separately or provide deterministic test data instead of masking it.

A baseline update hides an unexpected change

Do not update snapshots simply to make CI green. Review the diff first, trace unexpected changes to the relevant component or styling, and rerun after fixing them. Use snapshot updates for changes the team has explicitly accepted.

Differences persist after the environment is aligned

Inspect the actual changed region, check for animations, responsive breakpoints, and font-loading timing, and verify the test is capturing the intended state. If some pixel variation is acceptable for the test, tune a narrowly scoped comparison tolerance and validate that it still exposes changes the test is meant to catch.
