If PhantomJS screenshots show the wrong typeface, missing characters, or text that looks different from your browser, first find out whether the font request failed, the font is unavailable to the PhantomJS process, or the capture happened before the page was ready. Check the exact PhantomJS binary and version, log resource failures and page errors, verify font access in the runtime environment, and compare image output separately from PDF output. There is no documented universal setting that makes PhantomJS fonts render identically across systems.
Why PhantomJS screenshots can use the wrong font
PhantomJS captures pages with its WebKit-based renderer. Its screen-capture example calls page.render() from the page.open() callback, but that callback is not documented as a guarantee that every web font has loaded and been applied. A fallback face, absent glyph, or visual difference can therefore have several causes rather than one universal fix. See the PhantomJS screen capture documentation.

- Failed or late font resource: the font URL may be inaccessible, blocked, timed out, or not complete when rendering begins.
- Different runtime environment: the PhantomJS process may run under a user, container, or operating system that cannot access the expected local font.
- Different binary or build: another PhantomJS installation or old dependency can produce different behavior.
- Different output path: image rendering and PDF text behavior are separate issues and need separate diagnosis.
Diagnose the actual PhantomJS run
1. Confirm the binary and version
Run which phantomjs (or the operating system’s equivalent) and phantomjs --version in the same service, CI job, container, or scheduled task that creates the screenshot. Check for duplicate installations and verify which executable the job invokes. PhantomJS’s troubleshooting guide explicitly recommends checking the version and warns that multiple installations can conflict.
2. Log network activity and page errors
Record resource requests and failures, especially URLs ending in font formats such as WOFF, WOFF2, TTF, or OTF. Also log page errors and determine whether the renderer can fetch the font URL. If HTTPS fails while HTTP works, the PhantomJS troubleshooting guide recommends checking SSL libraries. A useful diagnostic record includes the requested URL, response or failure status, and any page error; without it, a fallback font can look like a CSS problem even when the font never arrived.

3. Check resource permissions and timeout settings
PhantomJS exposes the localToRemoteUrlAccessEnabled setting for access from local files to remote URLs, as well as resourceTimeout. These settings apply during the initial page.open() call, so configure them before opening the page. Consult the WebPage API documentation for the API details. If the page is opened from a local file while its font is remote, check the local-to-remote policy; if the font request is slow, check whether the resource timeout is too short.
4. Verify the font in the process’s environment
Check that the CSS requests the intended family, weight, and style, and that its fallback chain is sensible. Then verify that the operating-system user or container running PhantomJS can access the font. Fonts installed on a developer workstation do not establish that a CI container has them. The official PhantomJS pages cited here do not prescribe one host-font installation procedure for every operating system, so use the font-management method appropriate to the actual host.

5. Make readiness an explicit condition
Do not treat the page.open() callback alone as proof that web fonts are ready: the screen-capture example does not make that guarantee. Use request logs and a page-specific readiness condition, with a bounded timeout so a broken page cannot hang the job indefinitely. Do not assume that newer browser APIs such as document.fonts.ready work in an older PhantomJS WebKit build; verify support in the exact binary before relying on them.

When testing a fix, hold the page, PhantomJS binary and build, operating system or container, viewport, font files, and output format constant. Change one variable at a time. PhantomJS documents viewport configuration and the rendering mechanism, but controlling these comparison variables is a diagnostic practice rather than a documented guarantee of identical output.

Image screenshots and PDF text are different problems
The render API documents image formats and says that image generation other than PDF uses Qt’s QImage. It does not document a universal switch that makes fonts identical on every platform. See the render API documentation.
If the issue is instead that PDF text is not selectable, or the PDF is unexpectedly large, investigate the PDF path separately. In a historical PhantomJS issue discussion, a user reported a remotely loaded web font being rasterized; a later Linux-specific report said installing TTF files and running fc-cache -fv helped that user’s PDF case. Another commenter reported that upgrading a dependency was sufficient. These are user reports, not a general screenshot repair or a guaranteed fix for other systems.

When to move off PhantomJS
PhantomJS is a legacy project: its GitHub repository was archived on May 30, 2023. That context makes old runtime and build dependencies a plausible factor when behavior differs, but it does not identify the cause of any individual font problem. For new automation, evaluate a maintained renderer against the target site and the cost of changing scripts separately from fixing the immediate failure. The available evidence does not establish one migration choice as the winner.
