vMix attempts to reconnect to YouTube automatically after an internet or streaming-provider interruption; there is no separate reconnect switch identified in vMix’s guidance. Watch the Stream button: orange indicates a connection or retry state, while red indicates a successful connection. Automatic reconnection does not restore your internet service or guarantee that YouTube will keep the same live event open.
What to expect when the connection drops
When vMix loses its connection to the internet or streaming provider, its Stream button turns orange and vMix attempts to reconnect. Once the connection succeeds, the button returns to red. These are vMix’s documented indicators; the reconnect article was last updated August 20, 2020, so interface details may differ in newer versions. This is encoder behavior, not internet failover: vMix can retry sending the stream, but it cannot repair a failed ISP connection. The available guidance does not specify a retry interval or duration, number of attempts, or guarantee that YouTube will preserve the same event or viewer page through every outage.

Choose how vMix connects to the YouTube event
Set up the destination and event before going live. vMix documents two YouTube workflows; neither is established as having better outage recovery.

For the current setup flow, consult vMix’s YouTube streaming overview and its Live Stream Now instructions. The overview was updated April 9, 2025; the Live Stream Now guide was updated March 16, 2021, and menu details can change between vMix versions.
Configure the stream key and event controls
- For a Studio-managed event: create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio and copy the correct stream URL and key into the corresponding vMix streaming destination. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential; do not share it publicly. Follow YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings.
- For Live Stream Now: use the YouTube destination flow in vMix to sign in and create or select the event. Check the guide’s current instructions in your installed vMix version, as the documented procedure may not match newer menus exactly.
- Review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings for the event. They affect how encoder actions control the event. If your goal is to resume the same event after an outage, do not press Stop in vMix or end the event in YouTube while troubleshooting; in the Live Stream Now workflow, finishing in vMix automatically ends the YouTube stream.
What to do during an outage
- When video stops, check whether the local internet connection is actually back. vMix’s reconnect attempts cannot bring back a failed ISP or router connection.
- Watch the vMix Stream button. If it is orange, allow vMix to retry as the connection recovers. Red indicates that vMix has re-established a streaming connection.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check stream health and any status messages. A red button in vMix indicates a connection to the internet, but YouTube’s stream health helps identify whether YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.
- If the button repeatedly changes between orange and red, investigate upload capacity, CPU load, and the network path to YouTube before changing event configuration. Recheck the correct event and stream key only if the connection or event setup appears to be the issue.
Why vMix may keep reconnecting
- Insufficient upload capacity: the selected stream quality may require more upload bandwidth than is available, particularly if other devices or applications are using the connection.
- High CPU load: a heavily loaded computer can struggle to encode and send the stream reliably.
- Provider path or quality mismatch: the route to the streaming provider may not be able to receive the selected quality reliably.
- YouTube-side status: use Live Control Room stream health and its messages to check whether YouTube is receiving the feed and whether it reports an issue.
vMix’s support article gives a rule of thumb: set streaming bitrate below 80% of available upload speed for best results. This is guidance, not a guarantee; leave headroom for variation and other network traffic. The article was last updated August 20, 2020. YouTube also provides encoder troubleshooting steps for interpreting stream problems.

Troubleshooting common symptoms
