Phantom Blade Zero is closest to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in the kind of precision, timing-focused action it appears to pursue, but it is not confirmed to copy Sekiro’s posture meter, deathblows, or Resurrection system. Its confirmed identity is a dark wuxia action game built around expressive, handcrafted martial-arts animation and customizable combat setups.
Black Myth: Wukong is a better comparison for market context, Chinese-developed action RPG visibility, and spectacle than for exact mechanics. Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled for October 29, 2026, on PlayStation 5, with a fall 2026 Epic Games Store release plan; those details should be checked again close to launch.

What Phantom Blade Zero is actually trying to be
Phantom Blade Zero is presented as a dark wuxia action game, not as an announced remake or sequel to Sekiro. Wuxia is a tradition of Chinese martial-arts storytelling in which highly skilled fighters move with exaggerated speed, technique and theatrical control. That foundation matters because it explains why the game can look familiar to players of precision action titles while still aiming for a different cultural and visual language.

PlayStation’s official material emphasizes customizable combat setups and the ability to express an individual style through builds. That wording points toward a game in which players can tune how they approach fights rather than simply equip one fixed moveset. It does not, by itself, establish a class system, a loot structure, or any particular statistics model. Those details should not be inferred until the developer publishes them.
The animation philosophy is unusually important. In its 2023 announcement, the team said it uses handcrafted animation because motion capture could not do the combat moves justice. That suggests the designers are prioritizing deliberate martial-arts choreography over merely recording human movement and applying it to characters. The result the developers are seeking is authored, readable action: attacks that communicate a style and rhythm instead of looking like generic swings.
An Epic Games Store News developer interview described kung fu as a vehicle for gameplay, story, image and technology, as well as for style, characters and writing. In other words, martial arts are not being treated as a thin skin over a conventional action game. They are intended to connect the controls, the fiction and the visual presentation. That ambition is why Phantom Blade Zero should be judged on its own design once the full combat system is documented.

How its combat compares with Sekiro
Where the games may feel similar
Sekiro is the strongest comparison because both games invite attention to timing, spacing and the readable exchange between attacker and defender. In Sekiro, the player usually succeeds by staying engaged, deflecting at the right instant and maintaining pressure rather than waiting passively for a large opening. A game built around highly choreographed wuxia attacks can produce a similar feeling of focused, aggressive defense even if its underlying rules differ.
Both games also make combat style part of the appeal. Sekiro’s katana duels are defined by a distinctive cadence: an enemy strikes, the player deflects, posture rises, and a deathblow becomes available. Phantom Blade Zero’s confirmed customization and handcrafted animation suggest a broader space for personal expression, but they do not confirm that it uses the same cadence or a visible posture bar.
What Sekiro specifically does
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, released by FromSoftware on March 22, 2019, is a single-player action adventure set in Sengoku-era Japan. Its combat loop is built around deflection and posture pressure. Successful deflections help break an opponent’s posture, and a lethal opening allows a deathblow. This is different from simply reducing a conventional health bar with repeated attacks.
The game combines that dueling system with stealth, vertical traversal and prosthetic tools. The shinobi arm gives the player situational options, while grappling and elevated routes change how encounters begin and end. Resurrection lets the protagonist return from death in the middle of an encounter, creating opportunities for a tactical retreat or a sudden counterattack. Those systems together make Sekiro more than a parry-focused sword game.

What remains unconfirmed for Phantom Blade Zero
No official material in the available sources says that Phantom Blade Zero reproduces Sekiro’s posture meter, deathblow rules, prosthetic arm or Resurrection. It is therefore accurate to describe a shared timing-focused appeal, but not to promise “Sekiro combat with Chinese weapons.” The distinction matters: a game can demand precise reactions while using stamina, health, cooldowns, combo resources or entirely different encounter rules.
Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike?
There is no official confirmation that Phantom Blade Zero is a Soulslike. The label usually implies a cluster of design conventions: deliberate stamina-conscious combat, persistent death-and-recovery stakes, interconnected areas, checkpoint-based progression, opaque storytelling and boss encounters designed around learning patterns. Some games use only a few of those traits, so the term is often applied loosely.
The confirmed description of Phantom Blade Zero does not establish any of them as a complete package. Customizable combat setups could coexist with a Soulslike structure, but they could also belong to a mission-based action game or a more cinematic character-action format. Handcrafted animation tells us about how attacks are authored, not how saving, death, equipment or level progression work.
The safest conclusion is that Phantom Blade Zero may appeal to Soulslike players who value demanding timing and boss-focused learning, while its wuxia direction and build expression could take it somewhere else. Wait for details about checkpoints, death penalties, level connectivity, difficulty options and progression before assigning the label with confidence.
How it compares with Black Myth: Wukong
The meaningful overlap
Black Myth: Wukong is a useful reference because it demonstrates the visibility of Chinese-developed, martial-arts-inflected action games on modern consoles and PC. Game Science’s 2024 action RPG, released first on Windows and PlayStation 5, gives players a recent point of comparison for production scale, visual spectacle and a Chinese cultural setting.
That makes Wukong relevant when asking whether Phantom Blade Zero belongs on the same discovery list. Both games challenge the assumption that major action releases in this space must come from Japanese or Western studios. Both also use Chinese-inspired imagery as a central part of their identity rather than as a minor decorative element.
Why it is not a direct mechanical comparison
The available evidence does not establish that Phantom Blade Zero uses Wukong’s exact staff, spell, stance or transformation systems. Nor does it establish identical progression, boss design or movement. Treat Wukong as a comparison of setting, audience and spectacle unless later primary material documents shared mechanics.

- Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.
For a player choosing between them, the distinction is useful. Wukong is an available 2024 action RPG with a known system; Phantom Blade Zero is an upcoming game whose strongest confirmed selling points are its dark wuxia tone, authored animation and customizable combat direction. One can be evaluated through its released mechanics, while the other still requires some patience and verification.

Movement is another area where Sekiro sets a high bar. Its stealth routes, grappling points and vertical traversal are not optional decoration: they change approach, positioning and escape options. A player comparing Phantom Blade Zero with Sekiro should not assume that fast martial-arts animation means equivalent exploration.
Official Phantom Blade Zero material emphasizes expressive combat and cinematic action. The complete traversal structure, world layout and exploration rules are not established in the available sources. Until those systems are shown, it is more precise to compare the games through combat feel than through map design.
Wukong should be treated with the same caution. Its existence as an action RPG does not prove that Phantom Blade Zero has the same map scale, chapter structure or encounter density. Look for confirmed information about hubs, mission selection, shortcuts, stealth, aerial movement and optional areas before using either game as a level-design template.

Phantom Blade Zero: dark wuxia with a “kungfupunk” presentation. The combination suggests a stylized world where martial-arts tradition meets harsher, more technologically or industrially inflected imagery. The developers’ comments also place story, characters, writing and image alongside gameplay, so tone is intended to be part of the experience rather than a backdrop.
Sekiro: Sengoku-era Japan filtered through shinobi fiction. Its story is tightly connected to a single protagonist, a defined mission and the supernatural consequences of immortality. Stealth, prosthetics and vertical routes reinforce that setting at the systems level.
Black Myth: Wukong: a Chinese mythology-inspired action RPG. It is the closest of the three as a broad cultural reference point, but its mythology and tone should not be treated as interchangeable with Phantom Blade Zero’s dark wuxia world.

Release timing and platforms
According to a 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement, Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled for October 29, 2026 on PlayStation 5, with pre-orders announced. Epic Games Store News describes a fall 2026 release plan for the Epic Games Store. Because release dates and store availability can change, check the current PlayStation and Epic listings before purchasing or planning time around launch.
Sekiro is already available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows, and launched on March 22, 2019. Black Myth: Wukong released in 2024, first on Windows and PlayStation 5. Those different release positions affect the decision: Sekiro and Wukong can answer your gameplay questions immediately, while Phantom Blade Zero currently answers more through trailers, interviews and official previews.
Which game should you play while waiting?
| If you want… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reaction-based duels and aggressive defense | Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | Its deflection, posture and deathblow loop is fully established and remains the clearest benchmark for precision timing |
| A recent Chinese action RPG with mythology and spectacle | Black Myth: Wukong | It provides a released example of a large-scale Chinese-developed action RPG on Windows and PlayStation 5 |
| Dark wuxia atmosphere and handcrafted martial-arts presentation | Wait for Phantom Blade Zero | Those are its clearest confirmed differentiators, alongside customizable combat setups |
| A game to study before buying Phantom Blade Zero | Start with Sekiro | It tests whether you enjoy timing-focused pressure, but it cannot confirm Phantom Blade Zero’s exact systems |
If you buy Sekiro as the benchmark, identify the platform and edition clearly: the commonly referenced console version is the PlayStation 4 release. Do not assume a listing, price or stock status remains permanent.
What to watch for in future Phantom Blade Zero updates
- Whether combat uses a posture-like resource, a traditional health-and-damage model, or a new system.
- How customizable setups work: weapons, skills, stances, equipment, upgrade paths or another structure.
- Whether death, checkpoints and recovery follow Soulslike conventions.
- How much stealth, vertical traversal and exploration shape missions.
- Whether the Epic Games Store plan and October 29, 2026 PlayStation 5 date remain unchanged.
- How the final game balances cinematic choreography with player control and readable enemy reactions.
These answers will determine whether Phantom Blade Zero is primarily a precision dueling game, a build-driven character-action title, a Soulslike variation, or a hybrid with its own category.
Bottom line: the fairest comparison
Phantom Blade Zero should currently be described as a dark wuxia action game with handcrafted martial-arts animation and customizable combat direction. Sekiro is the right comparison for timing, precision and aggressive defense, but there is no confirmation that Phantom Blade Zero copies its posture, deathblow or Resurrection systems. Black Myth: Wukong is the right comparison for Chinese-developed action-RPG visibility and broad cultural context, not for unverified one-to-one mechanics.
Play Sekiro now if you want the clearest test of precision combat. Choose Wukong for a released Chinese action-RPG reference point. Keep Phantom Blade Zero on your 2026 watchlist, and recheck its final date, platforms and combat details when the developer and storefronts publish them.
