The nearly 20-minute gameplay deep dive for Phantom Blade Zero, published by S-Game as a State of Play broadcast on August 17, 2026, establishes four things: a dark wuxia action game built around weapon-configured combat, a connected but non-open world divided into eight regions, a story premise that starts with a betrayal and a 66-day deadline, and a release date of October 29, 2026 according to S-Game and PlayStation. Steam lists October 28. This is a preview based on the studio’s announcements and independent reporting on them, not a hands-on review.
Why S-Game made a dedicated gameplay video
S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang said the extended preorder trailer could not do the job alone. In the announcement for the deep dive, he wrote that the trailer “isn’t enough to cover our intricate gameplay systems, dynamic combat, and the dark wuxia land we call the Phantom World.” The deep dive was the studio’s attempt to show how those systems fit together, which is why it is the most detailed official look at the game’s structure so far.

Combat built around weapons
The core of the combat system is weapon configuration. According to S-Game’s recap of the broadcast, players can unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges, upgrade them, pair them with accessories, and call on summons. The same recap frames these as things unlocked over the course of play, so readers should not assume the full arsenal is available from the start.

The official PlayStation product page uses different counts: 30+ primary weapons and 20+ Phantom Edges. The difference matters if you compare pages. When you cite the deep dive itself, the 30+ and 25 figures are the ones S-Game attached to that broadcast.

A connected world, not an open one
Epic Games Store’s recap of the deep dive describes eight regions in a world that is connected but not open. Exploration is nonlinear, with secrets, side quests and clues spread across the map. PC Gamer, quoting Liang, described the journey as taking players through “intricate but surreal landscapes” and said the world is guided by “eight authentic, hand-painted Chinese ink wash maps.”
The practical distinction is that you move between regions in a set structure rather than roaming a single seamless landscape. Liang’s descriptions are the studio’s own framing, and how the world plays in practice has not been independently reviewed.
The story setup
Per Epic’s recap of the deep dive, the protagonist Soul is betrayed by The Order and left for dead. He is saved, but with a fatal condition that leaves him 66 days to live. His only hope is a cure, which he must find in the Wulin underworld. Liang’s description of the setting adds that the Wulin is “a place rife with conflict and intrigue, where our protagonist, Soul, will encounter citizens in need along his journey.”

Donnie Yen’s role
S-Game says Donnie Yen has served as creative consultant since 2023. He is also the facial and motion-capture performer for Mó Yuan, Soul’s father. The studio’s description covers that performance role only. It does not establish that Yen voices the protagonist, and readers should not assume he does.

What this preview does not establish
The deep dive and its recaps tell you what the game is designed to do, not how well it does it. Combat feel, the pacing of the 66-day timer, how the eight regions connect in practice, and the difficulty curve across weapon unlocks all need hands-on play. No independent review scores, player counts or sales figures exist yet for this preview, and none are cited here.
Keep the 30+ and 25 weapon counts, the eight regions and the October 28 and 29 dates attached to their sources when you repeat them. Each comes from a specific S-Game, PlayStation, Epic or Steam page, and the figures differ between pages.
