How to Turn On or Off Tap Twice and Drag on Touchpad to Multi-Select in Windows 11

You can turn the “Tap twice and drag to multi-select” touchpad behavior on or off in Windows 11 from the Touchpad page in Settings, using a single switch in the Taps section. The change takes effect immediately and does not require a restart.

Turn the setting on or off in Settings

Use this procedure on a Windows 11 PC with a touchpad. The label and layout below are the ones Windows 11 shows on the Touchpad page; if your build wording differs slightly, look for the same control in the Taps group.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  3. Expand Gestures & interaction, then expand Taps.
  4. Find Tap twice and drag to multi-select and set its switch to On to enable it, or Off to disable it.

To confirm the change, try the gesture in a file list or on a text field. With the switch on, a double tap followed by a drag selects multiple items or highlights text; with it off, the same motion behaves as an ordinary drag or click.

What the gesture does

The option controls the touchpad action used to select several items by tapping twice and dragging. Microsoft’s Surface guidance describes the related interaction as “Tap, immediately tap and hold, then drag,” which it says can move an item or select text. Microsoft’s Surface touchpad guidance covers this motion and the Windows 11 settings path for touchpad behavior.

ProtoArc T1 Wired Large USB Trackpad for Windows 11/10, Black
  • Windows Only: The Large Wired Trackpad for Windows10/11 is compatible with Windows 11, Windows 10, PC, laptops and desktop computers. Note: Not compatible with Mac/Chrome OS/Linux. Not recommended for use on other systems. Some touchpad gestures or functions may be missing
  • Convenient left and right physical clicks: The wired trackpad supports physical clicks of the left and right buttons at the bottom to realize the left and right mouse button functions. It also supports full-area single-click to realize the left mouse button function and two-finger single-tap for right mouse clicks, which is convenient for you to select text/documents and drag large areas easily
  • How to drag files and select text: Double-click with one finger + hold/slide to drag files or select text
  • Multiple gestures support: The touchpad supports multiple gestures and supports up to four-finger operation, which is smoother than the laptop touchpad operation. Fast and sensitive response, at your fingertips. Multiple functions, including smooth screen clicks, scrolling up and down pages, pinching to enlarge photos, etc.
  • How to adjust the touchpad cursor speed: Open "Windows Settings" → "Bluetooth and other devices" → "Touchpad". Adjust the "Cursor Speed" slider to suit your preference (slower ← → faster)

Because the gesture uses taps and a drag, it can conflict with habits such as tap-to-click combined with quick repeated clicks. If you accidentally select files while navigating, turning the setting off is the simplest fix.

When the option is missing

Not every touchpad exposes every gesture. Microsoft’s touch gestures guidance notes that some gestures only work with precision touchpads, and that gesture support depends on the hardware and driver. Microsoft’s touch gestures for Windows page describes the gesture set in general terms and does not list which models include this specific toggle.

If you do not see the control, check these points in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm you are on the Touchpad page under Bluetooth & devices, not a mouse page.
  • Scroll through the Taps and Gestures & interaction sections; the option may sit in a different expanded group on some builds.
  • Check whether the touchpad is a precision touchpad. Windows reports this in Device Manager under the touchpad’s device properties.
  • Update the touchpad driver or the laptop’s chipset and input drivers from the manufacturer’s support site.
  • If the control is still absent, the touchpad may be a non-precision device. Check your computer or touchpad maker’s support information for supported gestures.

Microsoft’s public guidance does not provide a universal alternate path for non-precision touchpads, so avoid assuming that every Windows 11 device offers this toggle.
