Perplexity SPACE vs E2B vs Daytona vs Modal: Which AI Agent Sandbox Should You Use?

Short answer: choose E2B for a focused, developer-friendly Linux code-execution product; Daytona for persistent workspaces, GPU or desktop operating systems, and customer-managed compute; Modal for Modal-native teams running highly parallel or reinforcement-learning workloads; and Perplexity SPACE for agent sessions that need pause, resume, fork, snapshots, strict credential isolation, and controlled outbound networking. There is no defensible single “cheapest” option because the vendors meter different resources, plans, and included services.

Quick answer: match the sandbox to the job

An AI agent sandbox is the isolated environment where an agent can run generated code, inspect files, install dependencies, call tools, and sometimes access GPUs or desktop operating systems without putting your main application or host machine at risk. The four products in this comparison solve that problem with different boundaries and operating models.

Perplexity SPACE Firecracker microVM with a writable filesystem Ephemeral by default; pause/resume, fork, and rolling snapshots can preserve live state Node-level egress controls, per-session credentials, protocol forwarding; separate E2B Compatibility Wrapper Long-lived, stateful agent sessions where secrets and network policy are central
E2B Fast secure Linux VM built from templates Pause saves filesystem and memory; paused sandboxes remain until killed Mature SDK ergonomics and straightforward sandbox lifecycle APIs Focused code execution with a clear Hobby, Pro, and Enterprise progression
Daytona Isolated containers or VMs with dedicated kernel, filesystem, network, vCPU, RAM, and disk; GPU and desktop options Persistent workspaces and customer-managed compute options Secret injection through an outbound proxy; Linux, GPU, macOS, and Windows offerings Teams needing broad runtime choice, durable environments, or infrastructure control
Modal Secure containers with runtime-defined images, volumes, and GPU integration Five-minute default lifetime, configurable to 24 hours; snapshots support longer jobs Readiness probes, command execution, lifecycle events, and very high parallelism Modal users running bursty GPU, CI, or reinforcement-learning workloads

What matters when selecting an agent sandbox

Isolation boundary

A container shares the host kernel, while a virtual machine supplies a stronger boundary with a separate kernel. That distinction matters when an agent can execute arbitrary or model-generated code. SPACE uses a Firecracker microVM for each sandbox. E2B describes a secure Linux VM. Daytona can provide either Linux containers or Linux VMs, each with an isolated runtime allocation. Modal presents Sandboxes as secure containers for untrusted user or agent code.

Isolation is only one layer. A practical design also limits outbound traffic, keeps credentials out of files and process arguments, constrains filesystem access, and records what the agent did. Compare those controls rather than treating the words “container” or “VM” as a complete security claim.

Lifecycle and state

Decide whether a task lasts seconds, a workday, or several days. A short-lived execution sandbox can be recreated from an image. An interactive coding agent needs files, installed packages, process state, and perhaps memory to survive a pause. Snapshot and resume behavior therefore matters as much as startup speed.

Runtime breadth

Linux-only code execution is sufficient for many data and automation agents. GPU acceleration, macOS, Windows, a desktop stack, or a customer-owned cluster narrows the choice considerably. Verify whether the advertised runtime is generally available for your region and account rather than assuming every platform option is enabled on every plan.

Network and secret handling

Agents often need package registries, APIs, or a browser, but unrestricted egress increases the blast radius of a prompt-injection or dependency attack. Look for host allow-lists, policy enforcement outside the guest, and a way to provide credentials without placing plaintext values in environment variables or logs.

API and operating fit

An SDK that feels convenient in a prototype may be less important than integration with your existing cloud, observability, identity, and deployment systems. Also check concurrency limits, maximum session duration, regional availability, and whether the API’s semantics match the abstractions your application already uses.

Perplexity SPACE: strongest for stateful, tightly controlled sessions

How SPACE is structured

Perplexity describes a template as the starting filesystem and runtime configuration. A sandbox is then an isolated Firecracker microVM with a writable filesystem. That gives an agent a disposable execution boundary while preserving a familiar file-and-process model inside the guest.

Ephemeral execution with resumable state

SPACE says sandboxes live only as long as they are needed for running code, interacting with files, or other tasks, and are destroyed when the task finishes. Its snapshots change what “ephemeral” means in practice: rolling snapshots can preserve live memory and files so a session can resume later. Pause/resume and session forking let you branch an agent’s state instead of rebuilding it from scratch.

Sandboxes created through the API suspend after six hours without access or command activity. Treat that as an inactivity rule, not a promise that an active session can run indefinitely. Design your client to detect suspension, reconnect, and verify that the expected snapshot or fork is available before continuing.

Network and credential controls

SPACE combines node-level outbound-network controls, per-session credential isolation, and protocol forwarding. These controls are aimed at preventing one session’s credentials or network permissions from becoming another session’s resources. The vendor positions the in-sandbox layer as the last line of defence, so your application should still validate tool calls, constrain prompts, and apply least-privilege identities before code reaches the microVM.

When SPACE is the right choice

  • You need an agent to pause overnight, resume with files and memory intact, or fork an experiment from a known state.
  • Different sessions must receive separate credentials and tightly controlled egress.
  • You prefer a microVM boundary and are willing to use SPACE’s native API for its full feature set.

Important limitation

SPACE’s E2B Compatibility Wrapper is not the full SPACE API. It is a separate compatibility surface intended to ease migration, so an application that uses only wrapper-supported calls should not assume it receives every native snapshot, policy, or lifecycle capability.

E2B: the focused developer choice

Core model

E2B provides isolated sandboxes for agents to execute code, process data, and run tools. Its building blocks are a fast secure Linux VM, a reusable template, and persistence. Pausing a sandbox saves its filesystem and memory; a paused sandbox remains available until you explicitly kill it.

Why developers choose it

E2B’s product shape is deliberately narrow: create a Linux environment, run commands, move files, expose a port when needed, and control the lifecycle through an SDK. That makes it a natural fit for code interpreters, data-analysis agents, repository test runners, and applications that do not require a desktop operating system or a customer-owned cluster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The pricing ladder also makes capacity planning easier to explain to a small team: a no-subscription Hobby tier, a usage-plus-subscription Pro tier, and an Enterprise tier for committed usage and custom deployment requirements. Running sandboxes are charged per second, so idle time and pause behavior should be part of your cost model.

Trade-offs

  • The documented runtime is a Linux VM; choose another platform when macOS, Windows, or a specific desktop environment is a product requirement.
  • Long-running or very high-concurrency deployments may require Pro expansion or Enterprise terms.
  • Pausing preserves state, but your application remains responsible for deciding when to pause, resume, or kill a sandbox and for handling failures during that transition.

Daytona: broad runtimes, persistent workspaces, and infrastructure choice

Isolation and runtime options

Daytona describes every sandbox as an isolated runtime with its own kernel, filesystem, network stack, vCPU, RAM, and disk. Its documented choices include Linux containers, Linux VMs, GPU sandboxes with NVIDIA and AMD acceleration, and macOS sandboxes on dedicated Apple silicon. The product also presents Windows support and customer-managed compute, which can be decisive for software that cannot run in a standard Linux guest.

Secret delivery without plaintext in the guest

Daytona Secrets keep credential values outside the sandbox. When code makes an outbound request, a proxy substitutes an opaque placeholder with the real value only for an allowed host. The secret therefore does not need to appear in environment variables, files, process arguments, or logs. You still need to define a narrow host policy and rotate credentials because a permitted destination can misuse any token it receives.

Persistence and operational fit

Daytona is suited to workspaces that remain useful after an individual agent task: development environments, browser or desktop automation, GPU experiments, and customer-managed deployments. That persistence can reduce rebuild time, but it also means you must establish cleanup, patching, disk quotas, and retention policies instead of assuming every environment disappears immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Daytona wins

  • Your agent must run on macOS or Windows, use a GPU, or interact with a desktop-oriented toolchain.
  • You need a workspace that persists across days rather than a disposable command runner.
  • Compliance, latency, or data residency requires compute managed in your own infrastructure.

Modal: high-throughput execution for Modal-native stacks

Sandbox capabilities

Modal defines Sandboxes as secure containers for model-generated code, isolated untrusted execution, repository tests, CI pipelines, arbitrary dependencies, and reinforcement-learning rollouts. Images are defined at runtime, while volumes, command execution, readiness probes, and lifecycle events provide the building blocks for an application-managed execution service.

Lifetime and snapshots

The default maximum lifetime is five minutes, configurable up to 24 hours. For work that outlasts that window, Modal recommends taking filesystem snapshots and restoring a later sandbox. This is a different operating model from a workspace that remains paused indefinitely: your workflow should checkpoint deliberately and treat the next sandbox as a fresh process environment.

Where Modal fits best

Modal is particularly compelling when the rest of your system already uses Modal images, volumes, GPUs, and scheduling. Its advertised ability to run more than 1 million sandboxes in parallel targets bursty fan-out, large test matrices, and reinforcement-learning rollouts. The same scale can be unnecessary complexity for a single interactive coding agent.

Trade-offs

  • Short default lifetimes require explicit snapshot and restore logic for longer work.
  • Container isolation may not satisfy a policy that mandates a VM boundary for hostile code; obtain your security team’s approval for the exact configuration.
  • Teams not already using Modal may need to learn its image, volume, and lifecycle model before realizing the platform’s throughput benefits.

Pricing and concurrency: why “cheapest” has no universal answer

The following figures are vendor-published examples from 2026 pages. They use different billing units and do not include the same platform services, so calculate a workload-specific estimate rather than comparing the numbers as if they were equivalent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform and tier Published figure What the figure covers
E2B Hobby $100 one-time usage credit; sessions up to one hour; 20 concurrent sandboxes A promotional or allowance-style entry tier, not a recurring subscription price
E2B Pro $150 per month plus usage; sessions up to 24 hours; 100 concurrent sandboxes, expandable to 1,100 Subscription and usage are separate; running sandboxes are charged per second
E2B Enterprise Committed usage, multi-day persistent sessions, tens of thousands of concurrent sandboxes, custom sizes, and BYOC Contract terms rather than a public fixed rate
Daytona $0.0504 per vCPU-hour; $0.0162 per GiB-hour of memory; $0.000108 per GiB-hour of storage Resource rates stated by Daytona; total cost depends on allocated resources and runtime
Modal $0.1419 per physical core-hour; $0.0240 per GiB-hour Compute examples from Modal’s 2026 product page; other services and resource types may add cost
Modal scale 1M+ sandboxes in parallel An advertised concurrency capability, not a guarantee that every account receives that capacity without limits

For a fair estimate, record average and peak concurrent sandboxes, CPU or core allocation, memory, storage retained between runs, GPU time, network egress, snapshot volume, and idle duration. Then apply each vendor’s current regional prices and plan limits. The published figures do not establish an apples-to-apples total-cost winner.

Security evidence and how to interpret it

Perplexity’s security evaluation dated September 23, 2026 tested SPACE and eight other platforms, including E2B, Modal Sandboxes, and Daytona Sandbox. The configurations were tested on August 31–September 1, 2026. After remediation, none of the evaluated models retrieved the callback flag. That is encouraging evidence for the tested versions and configurations, not a blanket guarantee for every account, image, policy, or future release.

Before production, reproduce your threat model against the exact setup you will deploy. Test prompt-injection attempts, malicious package installation, metadata access, cross-session file access, unauthorized DNS or HTTP destinations, credential exfiltration, process escape, and denial-of-service behavior. Log policy decisions and keep a kill switch outside the sandbox.

E2B compatibility with SPACE: useful migration aid, not equivalence

The SPACE E2B Compatibility Wrapper documents support for the tested Python packages e2b==2.21.1 and e2b-code-interpreter==2.6.2. It covers common create and lifecycle calls, command execution, filesystem operations, file watching, and port flows.

Several E2B capabilities are explicitly rejected by the wrapper: mcp, volumeMounts, and iam create capabilities. A create request with network.allowPublicTraffic=true is also rejected, and some memory-related pause/resume variants are unsupported. Porting an E2B client therefore requires a feature audit and integration tests, not just a package replacement.

  1. Inventory every E2B field and method your application uses, including optional create parameters and pause/resume arguments.
  2. Pin the tested client versions while you validate behavior, then run tests for commands, files, watches, ports, failures, and reconnects.
  3. Replace rejected capabilities with SPACE-native policy, identity, or networking constructs where available.
  4. Verify that snapshot, fork, and credential behavior meets your security and durability requirements; compatibility of a call does not imply identical semantics.

A practical decision guide

Choose SPACE when session continuity is the product feature

Select SPACE if users expect an agent to return to an unfinished workspace, branch an experiment, and retain in-memory context while network and credential permissions remain tightly scoped. Its six-hour inactivity suspension and snapshot model should be reflected in your reconnect and retention logic.

Choose E2B when a clean code-execution API is enough

Choose E2B for a conventional Linux code sandbox with mature SDK ergonomics, per-second runtime billing, and an understandable path from experimentation to enterprise capacity. It is the pragmatic default for many code-interpreter and repository-test features.

Choose Daytona when the environment itself is valuable

Choose Daytona when the agent needs a durable development workspace, GPU acceleration, macOS or Windows, or compute that your organization manages. Its secret proxy and runtime variety address requirements that a Linux-only disposable sandbox cannot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Modal when fan-out and platform integration dominate

Choose Modal when you already operate on Modal or need massive parallelism, GPU scheduling, CI fan-out, or reinforcement-learning rollouts. Build snapshot and restore into the workflow for jobs that exceed the default lifetime.

Implementation checklist before committing

  • Define the threat model: decide whether agents may access the public internet, package registries, internal services, browsers, GPUs, or host-mounted data.
  • Specify state requirements: distinguish disposable runs, paused sessions, durable files, live memory, and forkable checkpoints.
  • Measure the real workload: capture startup latency, active runtime, idle time, peak concurrency, memory, storage, GPU use, and egress.
  • Test failure recovery: kill the guest, suspend it for the platform’s inactivity period, revoke a credential, block a destination, and restore from a snapshot.
  • Audit SDK semantics: confirm that file transfers, command exit codes, port forwarding, watches, timeouts, and cancellation behave as your application expects.
  • Set retention and cleanup: expire snapshots, paused sandboxes, credentials, logs, and disks according to your data policy.
  • Recheck limits and prices: plans, API versions, concurrency, regional availability, and security findings can change; validate them immediately before launch.

Bottom line

There is no universal winner. E2B is the balanced starting point for straightforward Linux agent execution. SPACE is the specialist choice for resumable sessions with strong credential and egress controls. Daytona is the broadest fit when runtime variety, persistence, GPUs, desktops, or customer-managed infrastructure matter. Modal is the scale choice for teams already invested in its platform and workloads that benefit from extreme parallelism or GPU scheduling.
