People First Bank’s Contents Plus is contents insurance for renters’ belongings, provided by CGU and distributed by People First Bank—not building insurance. The bank advertises accidental damage and electric motor burnout as included, plus up to two years of temporary accommodation. Whether those benefits fit a renter’s situation depends on the current policy wording, selected options, excess and certificate.
Who provides the policy, and what is it for?
People First Bank distributes the cover under its own Australian financial services licence, while Insurance Australia Limited issues it under the CGU brand. People First Bank says CGU is part of Insurance Australia Group. The bank also says cover is subject to CGU’s underwriting rules and acceptance guidelines, and that excesses and exclusion periods may apply. People First Bank’s contents insurance page summarizes features; the applicable Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), any Supplementary PDS, your certificate and selected excess govern your cover.

People First Bank lists cover for a range of event categories, including fire, flood or rainwater run-off, storm, theft or attempted theft, escape of water or liquid, impact, lightning, explosion, earthquake, riot or civil commotion, storm surge or tsunami, animal damage, deliberate or intentional acts, accidental breakage of glass and liability. These are headline categories, not a promise that every loss involving one of them is covered. The PDS sets the definitions, conditions, limits and exclusions.

Does temporary accommodation cover renters?
The bank advertises temporary accommodation for up to two years with Plus, compared with up to 12 months with Standard. Its headline explanation refers to living in “your home” and does not clearly establish how every renter’s costs are treated. In particular, the summary does not settle whether tenant cover pays extra rent, how that amount is calculated, what caps or approval rules apply, or how the benefit interacts with other accommodation arrangements.
A CGU-branded summary published by Bank First discusses reasonable extra rent costs for tenants with contents insurance, but it relates to another distributor and is not the contract for People First Bank customers. Do not use it to determine entitlement under this policy. Check the current People First Bank PDS and your certificate, and ask the insurer to confirm the tenant-specific calculation before relying on the benefit. Bank First’s CGU-branded summary.

Are laptops and phones covered outside the home?
Portable contents away from home is optional, according to People First Bank; it is not the same as the automatically included accidental damage at home. The bank advertises cover for loss, theft and accidental damage up to $10,000 per item unless an item is separately listed. It also points to geographic limits and exclusions. Its summary says to check the PDS for items outside Australia or New Zealand, and identifies scratches and dents, items being cleaned or repaired, and specified sporting, fishing, drone, musical-instrument and firearm use as excluded situations.
Before selecting cover, check whether your particular phone, laptop or other item meets the policy definition, whether it needs to be listed, where it will be used, and which excess and exclusions apply. Confirm these details in the current wording rather than assuming that a headline portable-items limit applies to every item or trip.

What should renters check before choosing Plus?
- Estimate replacement value. Make an inventory of belongings and use People First Bank’s contents calculator to estimate the amount of cover. Consider the cost to replace items, not just what you paid for them.
- Review valuables. The bank lists valuable contents inside the home as optional. Check whether valuables need to be separately specified and whether the proposed limits match their replacement value.
- Decide whether portable cover is needed. Confirm the optional cover, item limits, geography and exclusions for belongings you take outside the home.
- Compare excesses and limits. Check your selected excess alongside sub-limits and conditions for benefits you expect to use, including temporary accommodation and food spoilage.
- Check occupancy conditions and your certificate. Review any unoccupied-home requirements and make sure the certificate reflects the address, sum insured, options and excess you intended to select.
- Compare Plus with Standard using your actual quote. Weigh the additional included features and headline limits against the premium and the terms relevant to your household. The bank’s summary does not establish that Plus is the right choice for every renter.
How do quotes, claims and online access work?
People First Bank offers an online quote. CGU’s claims team is listed as available 24/7 at 13 24 80. Online claims eligibility depends on policy timing: People First Bank says it is available for policies first purchased after 16 June 2025 or renewed after 9 August 2025. Online policy updates also depend on purchase or renewal dates and the type of change. Check the bank’s current home insurance information for the applicable dates and eligible actions; do not assume an older policy has the same online access.

What remains uncertain from the public summary?
The current linked PDS was not retrievable from the available policy information, so exact exclusions, excess amounts and full claim conditions cannot be confirmed here. The bank’s headline page is useful for identifying features to investigate, but it cannot establish how a specific claim would be assessed. Before buying, obtain the current PDS and any Supplementary PDS, then check your certificate and ask People First Bank or CGU to clarify any renter-specific accommodation or portable-item question.
