The common Wi-Fi standard’s official technical name is IEEE 802.11. “Wi-Fi” is the familiar name for the wireless networking technology and ecosystem; IEEE 802.11 is the standards family that defines how devices communicate on a wireless local area network.
What does IEEE 802.11 mean?
IEEE 802.11 is a family of standards for wireless local area networks (WLANs). It specifies medium access control (MAC) and physical-layer (PHY) behavior: in practical terms, rules that let fixed, portable and moving devices communicate over a local wireless network. The IEEE 802.11 working-group page describes that scope in its overview.

The IEEE’s formal title for the consolidated standard is “Wireless LAN Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) Specifications.” The active consolidated edition is IEEE 802.11-2024. IEEE lists its publication date as April 28, 2025, and says it incorporates amendments 1 through 7, published during 2021–2024.
Is Wi-Fi the same as IEEE 802.11?
They are closely related, but the names serve different purposes. IEEE 802.11 identifies the technical standards family. Wi-Fi is the familiar name used for wireless networking products and generations associated with that family. It is more precise to say that Wi-Fi is based on IEEE 802.11 than to call “Wi-Fi” the formal IEEE standard number.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
How do Wi-Fi generation names map to 802.11?
Generation labels give people a simpler way to recognize related 802.11 work. IEEE’s overview and timeline identify these examples:
| Wi-Fi label | IEEE association | Band detail |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 4 | 802.11n | IEEE’s timeline identifies support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. |
| Wi-Fi 5 | 802.11ac | |
| Wi-Fi 6 | 802.11ax | |
| Wi-Fi 6E | 802.11ax extended into 6 GHz | 6 GHz availability depends on the country and equipment. |
These are naming associations, not a guarantee that every device bearing a generation label has identical capabilities. IEEE’s Technology Navigator overview presents the Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E relationships; its Wi-Fi timeline gives the Wi-Fi 4 and frequency-band example.

What does the standard tell you about a real connection?
The 802.11 designation tells you that a device or feature relates to wireless LAN standards. By itself, it does not establish the speed you will get, the coverage of a home network, the quality of your internet service, or compatibility between every pair of devices. Those outcomes depend on the particular access point or router, client devices, their supported features and bands, and the network environment.
When checking equipment, look at the capabilities of both the wireless access point and the devices that will connect to it. A generation name can help identify the standards association, but check the specific bands and features you need—and whether those bands are available where you live.
