Choose by input workflow, required PDF controls, plan limits, and the cost of your actual output sizes; then test both with the same representative pages before committing.
What differs between PDFShift and PDFCrowd?
The services overlap, but their documented workflows and credit units are different. PDFShift describes conversion from URLs or raw HTML; its raw HTML guide explains submitting HTML directly. PDFCrowd documents URL, HTML/CSS, file, and data-template inputs. See the PDFShift product page and PDFCrowd API page.
| Decision point | PDFShift | PDFCrowd |
|---|---|---|
| Documented input paths | URL and raw HTML | URL, HTML/CSS, file, and data template |
| Credit unit | One credit per 5 MB of generated PDF data; its pricing page gives a 14 MB output example costing 3 credits. | One credit per 0.5 MB of generated PDF data. |
| Published entry-level offer | Displayed free plan: 50 monthly credits, 15 MB maximum file size, and 30-second timeout. | Nano: $1/month for 10 credits. Trial: 100 API test credits valid for one month. |
| Published size/time limits | The cited 15 MB maximum and 30-second timeout apply to the displayed free plan, not necessarily other plans. | HTTP guide: 300 MB maximum upload and server-side stop after 60 seconds; these are guide-level limits, not necessarily every account’s effective limits. |
| Notable documented controls | CSS/JavaScript injection, headers and footers, encryption, watermarking, AWS S3 delivery, and parallel/asynchronous responses. | Page geometry, breaks, headers/footers, CSS/JavaScript and readiness controls, watermarks, password protection, PDF/A, and tagged PDF. |
Prices and limits above are vendor-published and can change. PDFCrowd says its listed prices assume typical output under 500 KB; check each vendor’s current pricing and plan terms before budgeting. See PDFShift pricing and PDFCrowd pricing.
Which input workflow fits your documents?
Converting a public web page
Either service can take a URL. Before choosing, confirm that the service can access the page as it appears to your intended audience: login requirements, cookies, redirects, and JavaScript-rendered content can affect what gets captured. PDFCrowd documents options for remote fonts, images, protected content, and dynamic-content readiness on its API page. Test the exact page and access method you use.
#1 Best Overall
Converting private or pre-rendered HTML
Direct HTML submission can avoid making the conversion service fetch a page from your application. PDFShift’s raw-HTML guide says direct submission can handle HTML that is not publicly accessible and notes that inline styles and scripts can reduce conversion time; these are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee of faster results for every document. PDFCrowd documents HTML/text and file inputs, including multipart file uploads in its HTTP guide. In either case, check how linked assets, fonts, and scripts are made available to the renderer.
Using templates or files
PDFCrowd explicitly documents data-template input and file submission. If your system creates PDFs from recurring documents such as invoices or reports, verify how template variables, local assets, and uploaded files are supplied, and test the resulting page breaks. PDFShift’s cited materials establish URL and raw-HTML conversion; they do not establish an equivalent template workflow.
Rank #2
- LIGHTWEIGHT AND FOLDABLE STRUCTURE: Foldable design (30x6x8cm) and lightweight (1000g) make it portable for travel or home use. Compact shape fits perfectly on your workbench without taking up much space
- SIMPLE CONNECTION: Works with USB connection without the need for additional programs for quick installation. Simple controls make it easy to operate both beginners and regular users with regular size papers
- QUICK DOCUMENT PROCESSING: Automatically scan suggestions one page per second, greatly increase productivity. Ideal for workplaces, schools, legal/financial areas where large capacity is required
- TEXT CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY: Smart OCR function works in over 200 languages, changes scanned files to editable text for easy storage and editing Seamless digital conversion of paper documents improves workflow
- EXCELLENT IMAGEING: Equipped with a 16MP clear camera, this portable document scanner produces crisp, accurate images of documents and keeps important content intact. Perfect for striking scans of contracts, receipts and books
Compare the controls your output requires
Do not treat a longer feature list as proof of better output. Match each required control to a real document and inspect the resulting PDF.
- Layout and pagination: PDFCrowd documents page size, orientation, margins, breaks, headers, and footers. PDFShift lists advanced headers and footers. Test long tables, repeated headers, overflow, and intentional page breaks.
- CSS and JavaScript: Both document CSS/JavaScript support. PDFCrowd also documents readiness controls for dynamic content. Check when the page is considered ready, particularly if content loads asynchronously.
- Security and access: PDFCrowd documents protected-content options; PDFShift lists encryption for generated PDFs. These address different stages of a workflow, so confirm both source access and PDF protection needs.
- Archiving and accessibility: PDFCrowd documents PDF/A and tagged PDF. If a regulator, archive, or downstream reader requires a specific conformance level, validate the actual generated file with the relevant checker; a feature listing alone does not establish compliance.
- Delivery and throughput: PDFShift lists S3 delivery and parallel/asynchronous responses. Confirm plan-specific concurrency and response behavior for your workload rather than assuming a listed option guarantees a particular throughput.
How to compare cost fairly
The credit units differ by a factor of ten in stated output-size increments: PDFShift assigns one credit per 5 MB of generated PDF data, while PDFCrowd assigns one per 0.5 MB. Therefore, comparing credit allotments alone is misleading. A credit is not a fixed number of documents; cost depends on generated file size, volume, plan, and the vendor’s current terms.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Generate a representative sample of your documents and record each PDF’s size.
- Estimate monthly volume and the distribution of file sizes, not just the average.
- Apply each vendor’s current credit rule and plan limits to that same sample.
- Include overage or credit treatment, rate limits, concurrency, and any required higher tier in the estimate.
- Repeat the calculation if images, embedded fonts, or content changes materially increase output size.
PDFCrowd’s pricing page lists plan-specific rate limits, concurrency, and maximum JavaScript delay. PDFShift’s cited free-tier figures are not a basis for inferring limits on paid plans. Confirm account-specific terms on the vendors’ current PDFCrowd pricing and PDFShift pricing pages.
Run a matched trial before deciding
No matched independent benchmark establishes which service is faster or renders more faithfully. Vendor claims should not substitute for a test on your pages. Use the same inputs and equivalent settings on both services.
- Include representative public pages, private content, and generated HTML if those are part of your workload.
- Use the same fonts, images, CSS, JavaScript, authentication conditions, viewport or page geometry, and readiness criteria.
- Inspect font substitution, image loading, clipping, page breaks, headers and footers, and dynamic sections.
- Record conversion latency, failures, retries, output size, and effective cost per document.
- For PDF/A or tagged PDF requirements, validate the artifact with the downstream tool or process that will actually consume it.
PDFShift’s home page displays vendor-published figures of 86+ million conversions, 56,000+ developers, a 1.5-second average conversion time, and 99.99% uptime, labeled by PDFShift as 2026. These are marketing claims, not independently verified or a matched comparison with PDFCrowd; they do not predict the result for your workload. See PDFShift.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which service should you try first?
Start with the input and compliance needs, not a universal winner. If PDF/A or tagged output, template input, or the documented protected-content controls are central, evaluate PDFCrowd first. If you submit raw HTML and value the documented S3 delivery or asynchronous/parallel options, evaluate PDFShift first. If large uploads, long-running scripts, or high concurrency matter, verify the relevant account limits directly; the published limits cited here apply to different contexts.
Best Value
For screenshot-only work where a PDF conversion service is not required, try ScreenshotNeo as the alternative: it returns website screenshots or PDFs and bills only clean shots, not bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, or cache hits. It is not a substitute for a PDF workflow that depends on PDF/A, tagged PDFs, or the specific conversion controls above.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot or PDF, ScreenshotNeo takes one GET request. For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of Stripe as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API docs for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
