Use YouTube’s Live Control Room for a quick visual check, or monitor the YouTube Live Streaming API for unattended alerts. A zero viewer count—or a page that still opens—does not prove the stream is healthy: check whether YouTube is receiving the feed, whether its health status has warnings, and, when the event itself matters, whether the broadcast is in the expected lifecycle state.
What to check: audience, stream, and broadcast
YouTube exposes audience metrics separately from stream-health information. Concurrent viewers tell you about the audience, not whether the encoder is sending a usable feed. Likewise, a live page responding does not confirm that YouTube is receiving healthy audio and video. Use the stream’s ingestion and health signals for that purpose. YouTube’s live metrics guidance and the LiveStreams API documentation describe these as separate kinds of information.

There are also two API resources to distinguish. A live stream represents the input feed and its settings; a live broadcast represents the event presented to viewers. The stream can be active while the broadcast is not in the lifecycle state you expect. If you need to confirm that the event itself is live, monitor both. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room for the channel and event you intend to monitor.

Check the stream status and the displayed error or health messages. YouTube timestamps errors; critical errors are marked red and moderate errors yellow. Read the message and timestamp rather than relying on a viewer count. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

Confirm that the picture and sound are present and match what the encoder is sending. A status indicator alone may not reveal a content problem such as missing audio.

If you need to confirm the event lifecycle as well as incoming feed health, verify the broadcast state separately.

This is the simplest approach when a person can look at Studio. It is not an unattended alert system: someone must check the dashboard.

Monitor an unattended loop with the Live Streaming API
A script can poll the authorized YouTube Live Streaming API and evaluate structured status fields. YouTube documents the stream-health fields in the LiveStreams resource. For broadcast lifecycle, use LiveBroadcasts: list, which requires authorization; the channel must also be enabled for live streaming. That list-method documentation states it was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.

configurationIssues[]: inspect the issue type and severity. Issues can include missing audio or video, unsupported codecs, low bitrate, or ingestion starvation.
A noData health code means YouTube’s backend has no health information. Treat it as unknown, not as healthy. The API documentation describes the fields and possible issues, but does not prescribe a polling interval or alert threshold; choose those to suit your operational needs and label them as your own policy, not a YouTube guarantee.
Build alerts around distinct failure signals

Start from a known-good baseline: confirm in Live Control Room that the intended stream is active, health is acceptable, and expected picture and sound are present.

Poll the authorized stream resource and store the last successful poll and the last health update time. This helps distinguish a failed API request or stale reading from a fresh healthy result.

Alert separately when the stream is inactive, health is bad, health data is stale or unavailable, or an important configuration issue appears. Include the latest status, health-update time, and issue types in the alert so whoever receives it has useful context.

Decide whether to debounce brief transient readings before sending an alert. That is an operational design choice, not a YouTube requirement.

Before leaving the loop unattended, test that your monitor detects a stopped encoder and a degraded or absent feed, and that the alert reaches someone able to act. This is a recommended operational check, not an end-to-end alert test provided by YouTube.
