PC Case Plugs to a Motherboard: Find the Right Header for Each Cable

PC case cables connect to different motherboard headers. Learn how to identify each lead and use your board and case manuals to connect it safely.

There is no single universal “PC case plug.” The power and reset switches, status LEDs, front USB, front audio, and case fans use different motherboard headers. Use the exact motherboard and case manuals to identify each cable and its matching header; do not rely on a generic pin map or wire color.

Before you connect anything

  1. Shut down and disconnect power. Unplug the PC before working inside the case.
  2. Identify both models. Find the motherboard model and the case model so you can consult their manuals.
  3. Locate the diagrams. In the motherboard manual, find the board layout and internal-connector or system-panel diagram. In the case manual, check the cable names and any instructions for hubs.
  4. Read each cable label. Case leads may be marked for power, reset, HDD LED, power LED, USB, HD Audio, or fans. Match the labels and connector type to the manual, not just the wire colors.

Header names and locations vary by board. ASUS notes that “The actual appearance and port nomenclature may vary depending on the specific manufacturer and model. Therefore, it is imperative to consult the motherboard manual for precise and accurate guidance.” ASUS support guidance, last updated April 21, 2025.

Connect the power switch, reset switch, and LEDs

These small leads usually go to the motherboard’s system-panel header. Look for a label such as F_PANEL, PANEL, or JFP1, then use the board’s diagram to identify each pin. Do not assume pin positions from a diagram for a different motherboard: even ASUS manuals illustrate different board-specific layouts, such as the 10-1-pin system-panel connector shown for the P8H77-I. ASUS support guidance; P8H77-I manual.

Power and reset switch leads generally work in either orientation, but LED leads are polarity-sensitive. Follow the board diagram and any plus/minus markings on the leads. If an LED does not light after assembly, shut down and check its orientation against the diagram.

Match each front-panel lead to its own header

Front USB

Connect a case USB cable only to a compatible internal USB header specified by the motherboard manual. USB 2.0, USB 3.x, and front USB-C use different header types and keying; a plug that looks close is not proof of compatibility. Check the case cable and board header descriptions before connecting. The reviewed ASUS manuals show multiple internal USB header types, reinforcing the need to match the exact connector. ASUS support guidance; P8H77-I manual; PRIME B550M-A manual.

Front audio

Find the motherboard’s front-panel audio header, often labeled AAFP or F_AUDIO, and connect the matching case lead. Some boards and cases document support for both HD Audio and legacy AC’97. For example, the ASUS H81M-P manual recommends HD Audio and says the BIOS front-panel type setting must match when AC’97 is used. That instruction applies to that example; consult your own board’s manual for its supported connector and settings. ASUS H81M-P manual.

Connect case fans or a fan hub

A case fan may connect directly to a chassis or system-fan header, or it may connect to a hub whose cable then connects to the motherboard. Follow the fan or hub manual to locate the primary motherboard connection and understand its control behavior. ASUS advises consulting the case or fan-hub manual for the primary port. If you use a splitter, ASUS says fans connected to it synchronize speed with the first fan’s RPM. Check the manuals for your specific motherboard and hub for supported limits and controls; do not assume another board’s limits apply. ASUS fan splitter guidance; ASUS fan-hub guidance.

Check the connections before powering on

  • Confirm every cable is on the intended header and fully seated.
  • Check that no plug is shifted by one pin.
  • If the plug does not match the header, stop. Do not force it; verify compatibility in both manuals.
  • If a status LED fails, disconnect power before checking its polarity against the system-panel diagram.

Without the motherboard and case model numbers, a reliable pin-by-pin map cannot be given. If you need that level of guidance, provide both model numbers.
