To pause iCloud Photos uploads, open Photos and use the pause control in the library status area. Apple documents a one-day pause, but the button may not appear for every library status. To resume, check that same status area and use Sync Now if it is offered, or wait for syncing to restart automatically.
Pause iCloud Photos on iPhone or iPad
The route depends on your iOS or iPadOS version:
- iOS 26 or later: Open Photos, tap Collections, tap the profile button, then tap Pause.
- iOS 18: Open Photos and tap the profile button, then tap Pause.
- iOS 17 or earlier: Open Photos, tap Library, choose All Photos, scroll to the bottom, then tap Pause.
Apple describes this as a one-day pause. The control’s availability depends on the library’s status, so it may not be shown in every situation. See Apple’s instructions for setting up and using iCloud Photos.

Pause iCloud Photos on Mac
- Open Photos and select Library in the sidebar.
- Click All Photos and scroll to the bottom of the library.
- Click Pause if it is available.
The Mac control is also described by Apple as a one-day pause and may depend on the library’s current status.

Return to the Photos library status area to see what is happening. On iPhone or iPad, open Photos, go to Collections, and tap the profile button. On iOS 17 or earlier, use Library > All Photos and scroll to the bottom. On Mac, open Photos > Library > All Photos and scroll down.

If syncing paused automatically, the status message may offer Sync Now. Tap it when available, or wait a few minutes; Apple says some automatic pauses resume on their own. A manually requested pause is described as lasting one day. The same control or message may not appear for every cause. Apple’s paused-sync troubleshooting guidance explains the status checks.
Why iCloud Photos may pause automatically
Apple lists several conditions that can pause syncing. Check the message in Photos, since the appropriate next step depends on the condition shown.

- Low Data Mode or Low Power Mode: Check the relevant mode and the status message; syncing may wait until conditions change.
- Battery or performance optimization, poor network, or battery below 20%: Reconnect to a reliable network, charge the device, or wait for conditions to improve.
- Overheating: Let the device cool before expecting syncing to continue.
- Full iCloud storage: Resolve the storage constraint. A Shared Photo Library owner reaching their storage limit can also pause syncing.
For a sync problem, Apple recommends connecting the device to power and Wi-Fi and letting syncing proceed uninterrupted overnight. If it still does not work, check for an operating-system update, confirm other iCloud services work, review your network and Apple System Status, and check whether files are supported or appear in the Unable to Upload album. Apple advises against turning iCloud Photos off as routine troubleshooting.
Pausing is not the same as turning off iCloud Photos
Pause is a temporary control in Photos. Turning off Sync this device or Sync this Mac is a broader settings change: new uploads, edits, and deletions will no longer sync to that device. If you want local copies before turning syncing off, Apple advises downloading the originals first; optimized versions stored on a device may not be full-resolution originals. Prioritize syncing instead of pausing
On iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS version 27 or later, Apple’s setup instructions describe a separate Sync Immediately option: go to Settings > [name] > iCloud > Photos > Sync Immediately, then choose For Today. This prioritizes syncing; it is not the pause control. Allowing Photos to use cellular data can increase data use.
