The clearest documented example is the main numbered Final Fantasy series: PlayStation describes its games as self-contained stories without direct connections, while also identifying specific sequels such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Final Fantasy X-2.
What “non-sequel” means here
Here, a non-sequel is a game that is not a direct narrative continuation of an earlier game. That does not mean it has no relationship to a franchise. Games can share a name, recurring ideas, systems, or creative influences without continuing the same story.

Numbers can also mean different things: an Arabic numeral, a Roman numeral, a year, or a number included in a subtitle. The number alone does not establish a game’s place in a story. To assess a specific title, ask whether it directly continues an earlier plot, shares characters or a world, uses the number as franchise branding or story numbering, and is explicitly described as a sequel or spin-off.
The strongest example: numbered Final Fantasy games
PlayStation’s guide to Final Fantasy characterizes the numbered games as self-contained stories without direct connections to one another. That makes the series a well-supported example of numbers that mark franchise entries without automatically requiring narrative continuity.
#1 Best Overall
The generalization has clear exceptions. The same guide identifies Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Final Fantasy X-2 as sequels. A number in a title is therefore not enough to decide whether a particular game continues another one; the relationship needs to be checked title by title.
Why shared ideas do not make a game a sequel
Entries in a series can influence one another without sharing a continuing plot. In a Square Enix interview about Final Fantasy IV and the series’ anniversaries, the discussion connects Final Fantasy IV’s story and job system with ideas from Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III. That is useful development context, but influence between games is not, by itself, evidence that one story directly follows another.

Does the number mean newcomers need to start at the beginning?
Final Fantasy producer Naoki Yoshida has discussed the possibility that numbering could lead newcomers to think earlier games are prerequisites. GamesRadar reported that concern, but it should be understood as a producer’s concern about how numbering may be perceived—not as a measured finding about player behavior. For an individual game, check its stated story relationship rather than assuming the number dictates a play order.

The available support is strongest for the numbered Final Fantasy series. It does not provide a reliable, comprehensive classification of numbered games across other franchises, so a longer list would risk labeling titles without adequate evidence.
