Start with the jacket’s job, not the brand
A brand-wide ranking obscures the differences that matter. Compare waterproof shells with waterproof shells, and insulated jackets with jackets built for similar temperatures and use. Consider expected precipitation, activity level, warmth, packability, fit, layering and how the garment can be cared for or repaired.

- For prolonged rain or wet snow: look for a waterproof membrane or back finish and check the garment’s construction. A durable water-repellent (DWR) finish alone is not waterproof protection.
- For cool, drier conditions and active movement: a soft shell may offer more breathability and flexibility than a hard shell.
- For insulation: choose based on whether low weight and compressibility or performance in damp conditions matters more.
How to compare their weather protection
Waterproof shells and soft shells serve different conditions
Patagonia describes hard shells as waterproof outer layers for severe weather, while soft shells prioritize breathability and flexibility in less severe conditions. The North Face also distinguishes water-repellent treatments from waterproof back finishes or membranes. Check the construction of the exact jacket rather than inferring protection from its brand or product category. DWR is an exterior finish that encourages water to bead on the fabric. A membrane or waterproof back finish provides the barrier against water passing through. Dirt and oils can reduce DWR performance, so care matters as well as construction. Patagonia’s repair and care resources explain the distinction, and The North Face US care guidance notes that shell DWR can decline as soils accumulate.

Choose insulation for the conditions
Down
Down is light, compressible and efficient when kept dry, making it attractive when warmth-to-weight and packability are priorities. Its performance advantage is less useful if the jacket is likely to become damp.
Synthetic insulation
Synthetic insulation is a sensible choice when dampness is likely because it retains its structure and warmth better in wet conditions than down. Compare the exact models’ insulation specifications; the available evidence does not establish a brand-wide warmth ranking. Fit, layering and ownership are model-specific
Check fit with the layers you will actually wear
A shell may need room for a base layer and midlayer, but fit varies by model. Check the specific jacket’s fit notes, hood and hem adjustments, and intended layering use. The available sources do not provide a matched Patagonia-versus-The North Face fit comparison, so do not assume that sizing translates between brands.
Follow the garment’s care instructions
Patagonia’s care guide, dated August 20, 2026, recommends mild technical-gear detergent and low-heat drying for waterproof garments; it says these steps can restore water repellency and help extend garment life. The guide distinguishes the membrane, which blocks liquid water while allowing vapor to escape, from the exterior DWR finish. The North Face US care page directs owners to the sewn-in garment tag for cleaning instructions. Its UK product information recommends taking a damaged waterproof garment to a retailer or outdoor-garment repair centre. These are country- and product-specific directions, not a guarantee of identical service everywhere; verify local repair and warranty terms. Consider material claims in their stated scope
Patagonia says that, since Spring 2025, all new Patagonia styles are made without intentionally added PFAS. This is Patagonia’s statement about its own new styles, not a comparative claim about The North Face. Check current product information for the exact jacket you are considering.

One model example—and what it does not prove
Patagonia’s Men’s Jackson Glacier Parka listing describes a waterproof, breathable and windproof two-layer H2No shell made with recycled polyester and 700-fill-power recycled down. It illustrates how an insulated parka can combine a weatherproof shell with down insulation; it is not representative of every Patagonia jacket or a direct match for every The North Face model. What the available comparison can—and cannot—establish
The available official brand guidance explains materials, shell types and care, but does not provide a directly matched current The North Face model, controlled head-to-head testing or a comparable price basket. It therefore does not support declaring one brand warmer, more waterproof, more durable or better value overall. Decide by comparing the construction and specifications of particular jackets for the conditions you expect.
