Whether you can recover an NFT sent to the wrong wallet or network depends on who controls its destination. First check the transaction and the NFT’s current owner on the block explorer for the network used. If it is still at an address you control, the issue may be a network or display setting. If it reached someone else’s address, that owner must send it back; if it went to a custodian, contact the platform through its official support channel. A confirmed transfer generally cannot be undone by the sender.
First, verify where the NFT went
Do not assume an NFT is lost just because it disappeared from your wallet or marketplace. A transfer can be confirmed on-chain before a wallet display or marketplace listing updates. Find the transaction hash in the sending wallet or marketplace, then check it on the block explorer for the network used. MetaMask’s guidance on sent assets sent to the wrong place and its NFT management instructions point to checking the relevant network and ownership; use the correct NFT help page at MetaMask Help Center.

Record the transaction hash, chain or network, recipient address, NFT contract address, and token ID. Confirm whether the transaction is pending, failed, or confirmed, and inspect the token’s current owner on that same chain. A wallet screenshot or marketplace display alone does not establish ownership.

| What you find | What to do | What recovery depends on |
|---|---|---|
| The NFT is still at your intended address but is not visible | Switch the wallet to the transfer network; if supported, import the NFT using its contract address and token ID. | Your wallet’s network and NFT display support. |
| The NFT is at your address on another EVM-compatible network | Select or add that network in a suitable wallet and check the address on its explorer. | You must control the corresponding address on that network; support can vary by wallet and NFT. |
| The NFT is at a different address you control, or on a non-EVM chain | Verify the chain and how the destination address is derived before acting. | Addresses on non-EVM networks may not correspond to the same address on an EVM chain. |
| The NFT is at someone else’s wallet | Contact the owner and ask them to send it back. | The current owner must cooperate and initiate a new transfer. |
| The NFT is at a contract address | Inspect the contract and contact the project through its official site or support channel. | The contract must have a way to handle the NFT; recovery is not guaranteed. |
| The destination is an exchange or other custodial platform | Open a support case with the platform through its official channel and provide the transaction details. | The platform must control the destination and offer a relevant recovery process. Support for unsupported fungible assets does not establish NFT support. |
If the NFT is yours but hidden in the wallet
Switch to the network where the transfer occurred and check that the wallet address matches the recipient address shown on the explorer. If the NFT still does not appear, use the wallet’s supported manual import option with the collection contract address and token ID. MetaMask explains the import process in its NFT management help. Importing makes a token already held at that address visible in the wallet; it does not transfer an NFT from another address.

If it went to the wrong network
For an NFT sent to your own address on another EVM-compatible network, confirm that you control the corresponding address on that network, select the network in a suitable wallet, and check its explorer. MetaMask describes this route for compatible networks, but support depends on the wallet and NFT. Do not assume it applies to non-EVM networks: address formats and derivation can differ, so first verify that the destination is actually an address you control.
If it went to someone else, a contract, or a custodian
Another person’s address
Ask the recipient to return the NFT. A sender cannot reverse a confirmed transfer; a return is a separate transfer made by whoever owns the NFT now. OpenSea’s transfer guide states, “Once it’s been sent, you won’t be able to undo it.” (OpenSea Help Center, March 12, 2026.) This describes undoing the transfer from the sender’s side, not a voluntary return by the recipient.

Contract address
If the destination is a smart contract, check whether its documentation or project support explains how it handles mistakenly sent NFTs. Contact the project only through a verified official site. If the contract has no recovery mechanism, there may be no way to retrieve the token.
Exchange or custodial platform
Contact the platform through its official support channel, and include the transaction hash, chain, NFT contract, token ID, and destination address. Do not assume that a platform’s recovery page for certain unsupported crypto assets applies to NFTs: Coinbase’s unsupported-crypto recovery service describes eligibility for particular assets and networks, not general NFT recovery.

If the chain shows the right owner but a marketplace does not
If the explorer confirms the NFT is still owned by your address but OpenSea lists the wrong owner, the issue may be a stale marketplace view rather than a transfer problem. OpenSea advises allowing time for indexing and refreshing; if the on-chain transfer is successful but the listing remains wrong, contact its support team about syncing the platform view. See OpenSea’s guidance on a wrong owner listing.
If the transaction is still pending
Only use the sending wallet’s official transaction controls to try to speed up or cancel a pending transaction. Whether either action is available depends on the wallet and the transaction’s state. Once the transfer is confirmed, the sender generally cannot cancel or undo it.

Protect yourself from recovery scams
Do not disclose your secret recovery phrase, connect your wallet to an unsolicited recovery site, or sign a transaction you do not understand. Be suspicious of urgent messages, requests for an unexplained fee or deposit, and people claiming to be support agents who approach you by direct message. OpenSea warns about phishing messages that imitate support or demand a “digitizing fee” and says it does not provide official support through social DMs; use its phishing-report guidance. MetaMask likewise says it will not ask for your Secret Recovery Phrase. Go to the wallet, marketplace, or exchange’s official site directly rather than following an unsolicited link.
