Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Choose a reputable standalone password manager if you regularly switch between browsers or operating systems, want features such as secure notes or sharing, or want less dependence on one vendor. Neither category is automatically safer: the right choice depends on how you use your devices and how well you protect the account or vault that unlocks your passwords.
What’s the difference?
Browser and device password managers are built into products such as browsers or operating systems. They save and fill passwords as part of that ecosystem, often using its account and synchronization features. A standalone password manager is a separate service or app that can work across browsers and devices, depending on the provider.

Both types can generate and store unique passwords. The decision is less about choosing a universally safer category and more about balancing integration, device compatibility, extra features, and the trust you place in the account that protects the vault.
How the two options compare
| Consideration | Browser or device manager | Standalone manager |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience | Usually easiest when you mainly use the browser or device maker’s ecosystem; it is already integrated. UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) | Requires a separate service or app, but may integrate with browsers and apps. Confirm the integrations available from the provider. NCSC; Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS) |
| Browsers and devices | Access and synchronization depend on the relevant browser or device account. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) describes cross-browser compatibility as low. CISA | Often intended for use across multiple browsers and devices, but actual platform support and synchronization vary by provider. NCSC; CCCS |
| Vault features | May offer fewer features beyond passwords, such as secure notes or sharing. NCSC | May include secure notes, sharing, password-health checks, or breach alerts; features differ by product. NCSC; CCCS |
| Shared devices | CISA says browser-based storage is not well suited to shared devices. Do not leave a password vault accessible to other users. CISA | Separate vault controls may help, but anyone who gains access to an unlocked device could still reach credentials available there. NCSC; CCCS |
| Account and recovery | The security and recovery of the browser or device account are part of the decision; details depend on the platform. CISA | You add a separate primary password, account, and recovery process. Check what recovery options the provider supports and plan ahead. NCSC; CCCS |
| Vendor dependence | Integration can be convenient but may tie access to one ecosystem. NCSC | NCSC identifies reduced vendor lock-in as one reason to consider a reputable third party. Check each product’s export and portability options rather than assuming they are the same. NCSC |
Which one should you use?
Choose the built-in manager for a simple, single-ecosystem setup
If you mostly use one browser or platform and want passwords to fit naturally into its existing sign-in and sync experience, start with its built-in manager. The NCSC’s practical advice is to favor the browser or device maker’s option when convenience is your priority.

Consider a standalone manager for mixed devices or broader vault needs
A standalone option may suit you better if you use different browsers or operating systems, want secure notes or sharing, or prefer not to rely on one vendor’s ecosystem. Check that the service supports all the devices and browsers you actually use, and review its recovery and export options before moving your passwords.
Be cautious on shared computers
Do not leave saved credentials available to other people who use the same device. If you cannot keep the device and vault access under your control, avoid saving passwords there.

Is one category safer?
There is no sound basis here for saying that every standalone manager is safer than every browser manager, or the reverse. The NCSC frames the choice around convenience, extra features, device and browser complexity, and vendor dependence. CISA highlights browser-account dependence and weak cross-browser compatibility; neither point, by itself, proves that a particular product is insecure.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →NIST recommends password managers for accounts that still require passwords. Its Special Publication 800-63B, revision 4, says websites and other verifiers must allow password managers and autofill, and should permit pasting when autofill APIs are unavailable. That is guidance for services accepting passwords, not a security certification for any manager.

No category-wide comparative breach-rate figure establishes that one type is safer, and this comparison does not establish the security of any named product. Claims such as “AES-256” or “zero knowledge” should not be treated on their own as proof that a particular product is secure.
Protect the vault and the device
A password manager concentrates access to many accounts, so its unlock path and the device holding an open vault deserve attention. NIST advises choosing a manager that supports MFA because its login protects the passwords stored inside. MFA adds a layer of protection if the password is compromised, though it does not replace securing your device.

- Understand recovery before you need it. Check how you can regain access if you lose a device or forget the primary password, and keep any recovery material in a secure place.

NIST illustrates why length matters: its consumer guidance estimates about 200 billion guesses for an eight-character lowercase password, and more than five hundred years to try every combination of a fifteen-character lowercase password at 100 billion guesses per second. These are illustrative brute-force calculations—not observed attacker performance or evidence that one storage category outperforms another. See NIST’s consumer password guidance.

Consider passkeys where available
For accounts that offer passkeys, you may not need to choose how to store a password for that login. NIST describes a passkey as a private digital key stored on a device: it is different for each login, does not need to be memorized, and is resistant to phishing. Passkeys are not available on every site, and you still need to secure your devices and understand account recovery. Many accounts continue to require passwords. NIST; NCSC.
