A habitat well inside a suitable lunar cave—or far enough beneath a protective pit overhang—would likely have a safer natural environment than one on the exposed surface. Rock can reduce exposure to radiation and micrometeorites, and some shadowed pit terrain has much steadier temperatures than the surface. That advantage is conditional: no candidate cave has been established as a safe, ready-to-use habitat site, and getting people, equipment, power and heat-management systems underground presents its own challenges.
How much steadier could a cave’s temperature be?
NASA reports that lunar surface temperatures reach about 127°C during the day and fall to about −173°C at night. Each lunar day and night lasts roughly 15 Earth days, so an exposed habitat must contend with long periods of intense heating and cold.

A NASA study published in 2022 found a very different thermal environment in the permanently shadowed reaches of the Mare Tranquillitatis pit. Diviner observations and computer modeling indicated temperatures around 17°C, with only slight changes across the lunar day. The modeled temperature applies to those shadowed reaches at that particular pit; it should not be assumed for every pit or cave. Extending the result to a possible cave beyond the pit floor is conditional on the cave’s existence and geometry.

What protection can rock provide?
A cave roof or deep pit overhang places rock between a habitat and the exposed lunar environment. NASA identifies pits and caves as potential sources of protection from cosmic rays, solar radiation and micrometeorites. The amount of protection would depend on the thickness, shape and condition of the rock, as well as where the habitat sits beneath it.
That is a reason to consider subsurface sites, not evidence that they eliminate radiation or make a crew safe by themselves. The cited sources do not provide a site-specific radiation dose assessment for a crewed habitat, or a measured reduction in astronaut health risks. A surface habitat lacks this natural rock barrier and would need engineered protection against environmental hazards.

What has been found beneath Mare Tranquillitatis?
NASA Science reported in 2024 that re-analysis of Mini-RF radar data collected by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2010 found evidence for a cave extending more than 200 feet from the base of a pit in Mare Tranquillitatis. The full length of the feature is unknown; the radar result does not provide a complete map or establish that the entire space is accessible or safe to enter.

A pit entrance and a confirmed, accessible cave are not the same thing. Orbital observations can identify promising openings, but do not reveal all the lower walls or floor-level geometry. NASA reported more than 200 lunar pits in 2014; that is a historical count of pits, not a current inventory of confirmed caves. Nor does evidence of a cave at one pit show that every pit leads to an underground void.

Why access and engineering could decide the choice
A naturally sheltered location is useful only if a mission can reach and operate in it. NASA’s technical presentation identifies several practical constraints for subsurface habitats:
- Landing proximity: A lander must reach terrain close enough to a suitable pit or cave.
- Transport: Crew and hardware have to move from the landing site to the underground location, then be installed or deployed there.
- Power and heat: A habitat needs reliable, round-the-clock power, and its systems must reject waste heat even in a sheltered setting.
- Site safety: The available evidence does not establish structural integrity under impacts or seismic activity, safe entry and exit, or emergency evacuation arrangements for an occupied cave.
These are engineering questions to resolve for each candidate location, rather than settled reasons to rule out all caves or endorse them in general.

What can be concluded about safety today?
The evidence supports a qualified comparison: a well-chosen subsurface site could offer meaningful natural advantages in thermal stability and shielding over an exposed surface location. It does not establish that a particular cave is safer overall for people. A habitat decision would require site-specific characterization of its geometry, rock and structural condition, radiation environment, access and operational feasibility; identifying a pit from orbit is only an early step.
