Passkeys are poised to replace passwords as the primary way people sign in to supported websites and apps, but they will not make every password disappear overnight. They use cryptographic credentials approved on a device instead of asking you to type a reusable secret. That design makes passkeys resistant to phishing and password reuse, while device security, account recovery, and services that have not adopted passkeys still matter.
How passkeys differ from passwords
A password is a secret you remember or store and type into a sign-in page. Because it can be reused, stolen, or entered into a convincing fake site, one compromised password can put other accounts at risk.

A passkey is a FIDO-based cryptographic credential associated with an account. In a typical public-key system, your device proves it has the credential by creating a cryptographic response; the service checks that response using a public key. You approve the sign-in locally with your device’s biometric, PIN, or pattern. The biometric unlocks the credential on the device; it is not sent to the website. FIDO’s explainer describes its standards as using public-key cryptography for “phishing-resistant authentication” (FIDO Alliance passkey explainer).
FIDO2 includes WebAuthn and CTAP. The practical difference is that a passkey is not a password you can be tricked into typing into a lookalike page. It is designed to work with the legitimate service, helping prevent common phishing attacks and reducing dependence on phishable one-time codes.

Are passkeys safer than passwords?
For supported sign-ins, passkeys are designed to resist phishing and do not expose a reusable password that can be tried on another service. That makes them a meaningful security improvement over password-only sign-in, especially for people who reuse passwords or fall for fake login pages.
They do not make account takeover impossible. A compromised device, compromised credential-manager account, weak recovery process, or social-engineering attack can still create risk. Passkeys improve the sign-in method; they do not replace sound device security or recovery planning.
How widely are passkeys being adopted?
FIDO Alliance estimated that five billion passkeys were in active use worldwide in 2026; this is the Alliance’s estimate, not a census of individual users (FIDO Alliance, May 7, 2026).

In FIDO Alliance and Sapio Research’s online consumer survey conducted in April 2026, 90% of respondents said they were familiar with passkeys, 75% had enabled one on at least one account, and 49% reported using passkeys regularly when available. The survey covered 11,000 adults who regularly sign in to online services in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, China, and India; the reported margin of error was ±0.9 percentage points at 95% confidence (FIDO Alliance, The State of Passkeys 2026).
The same report surveyed 1,400 decision-makers responsible for employee sign-in or authentication at organizations with 500 or more employees in those ten countries. Sixty-eight percent said their organization had deployed, piloted, or was rolling out passkeys for employee authentication. But deployment does not mean passwords are gone: 82% said fully passwordless authentication was an ultimate workforce goal, 28% said they had achieved it, and 57% continued to rely on phishable methods for employees’ primary day-to-day sign-in. These are survey findings, not a census of organizations.
The evidence points to passkeys becoming a major replacement for passwords in supported primary sign-in. It does not establish a date when passwords will disappear, or show that all services, organizations, fallback methods, and recovery flows have stopped using them.

Can you use passkeys on all your devices?
No. Availability depends on whether a website or app supports passkeys and whether your device, operating system, and browser support the relevant sign-in flow. Passkeys may be stored by a phone, computer, or hardware security key. Many users can start with passkey storage already built into a supported device; buying a physical key is not required.
Synced passkeys
A synced passkey can be made available on multiple devices through the same credential-manager provider account. FIDO names iCloud Keychain and Google Password Manager as platform examples, and 1Password and Dashlane as third-party examples. This can make a new device easier to set up, provided you can access the provider account and the devices and services support the passkey flow.
Device-bound passkeys
A device-bound passkey stays with one authenticator, such as a particular phone or FIDO security key. This can suit people or organizations that want a credential tied to a specific device, but if that authenticator is unavailable, another sign-in or recovery method is needed.

Using a phone with a computer
Some cross-device sign-in flows let a phone approve a sign-in on a nearby computer. The computer displays a QR code, and proximity verification helps complete the authentication. Whether this works depends on the service, devices, and browser.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens if you lose your phone?
The answer depends on where the passkey is stored and what recovery options the service and credential provider support. A synced passkey may remain available through the provider account on another supported device. A device-bound passkey may be unavailable with the lost device, so you may need a separate authenticator, another sign-in method, or the service’s account recovery process.

Best Value
- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
Do you still need a password?
For now, often yes. A service may not support passkeys, may offer them only alongside passwords, or may retain a password or another method for fallback and account recovery. Organizations can also deploy passkeys without removing every phishable sign-in method. The transition is therefore likely to happen service by service, rather than through a single date when passwords stop working.
FIDO Alliance’s 2025 consumer survey illustrates the friction passwords can cause, but its figures should not be confused with the broader 2026 survey. Among 1,389 people surveyed in the United States, United Kingdom, China, South Korea, and Japan, 36% reported at least one account compromised because of weak or stolen passwords, and 48% said they had abandoned an online purchase after forgetting a password (FIDO Alliance, April 30, 2025). These are self-reported results from that survey, not universal rates.
Do you need to buy a security key?
No. Supported phones and computers can store passkeys, so many people can use them without purchasing hardware. A FIDO2 security key is an optional physical authenticator that can hold a device-bound passkey. It may appeal to people who want a separate authenticator or to organizations with particular device requirements. Before choosing one, verify that its model works with the devices and services you use.
What to check before switching an account to a passkey
- Does the website or app offer passkeys for your account?
- Will the passkey sync through a provider account, or remain on one device or security key?
- Can you sign in from your other operating systems, browsers, and devices?
- What happens if you lose access to the device, credential manager, or security key?
- What fallback and account recovery methods remain, and are they protected?
For employers, rollout also involves implementation and user support. FIDO’s February 2025 enterprise summary describes organizations using both synced and device-bound approaches, often prioritizing people with access to sensitive data or applications and using communication and training to support adoption. It also identifies complexity, costs, and limited implementation clarity as reasons some organizations may not have active projects (FIDO Alliance, February 26, 2025).
