Passkeys bind authentication to the legitimate service; a one-time code can be captured by a fake site and relayed. If your bank does not offer passkeys, an authenticator app is still generally safer than SMS for avoiding the SIM-swap risk. Your bank’s available sign-in and recovery options matter, so check its official settings before switching.
How the two methods respond to phishing
Passkeys bind sign-in to the real service
A passkey uses a cryptographic credential associated with the legitimate service. With WebAuthn, authentication is tied to the verifier’s service identifier, so a fake bank page cannot simply collect a passkey secret in the way it can capture a typed code. NIST SP 800-63B describes this as phishing resistance through verifier-name binding. Read NIST SP 800-63B.

NIST’s consumer guidance says passkeys “can’t be easily stolen through phishing and don’t require memorization.” That is not a guarantee against every kind of account takeover: the security of the account and its recovery routes still matters. NIST’s password and authentication guidance.

Authenticator-app codes can be phished
An authenticator app generates a one-time password (OTP), but you still type that code into a login page. If the page is an impostor, it can relay the code to the real bank while the code is valid. NIST says manually entered OTPs are not phishing-resistant; the same limitation applies to app-generated codes. NIST SP 800-63B.

- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Why an authenticator app can still be better than SMS
An app-generated code avoids relying on delivery to your phone number. The FTC says authenticator apps are safer than text-message codes because they are not susceptible to a SIM-card swap or compromise of your email account in the way text delivery can be. But the app code can still be stolen through phishing if you enter it on a fake login page. The FTC advises using an authenticator app or security key when available. FTC guidance on two-factor authentication.
| Method | Phishing and code relay | SMS/SIM-swap exposure | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passkey | Stronger resistance: WebAuthn binds authentication to the service identity. | Does not rely on receiving an SMS code. | The bank must support it; provider security and account recovery still matter. |
| Authenticator-app OTP | A typed code can be captured and relayed from a fake site. | Avoids the phone-number SIM-swap path described by the FTC. | Protect recovery codes and never disclose an unexpected code. |
| SMS OTP | A typed code can be phished and relayed. | Text delivery is exposed to SIM-swap attacks. | Use an app or security key instead if your bank offers one. |
Recovery and device changes are part of the security choice
Passkeys may be synced across devices or tied to a particular device; the setup and recovery experience depends on the implementation and provider. NIST notes that correctly implemented syncable authenticators can simplify recovery and cross-device use. NIST’s explanation of syncable authenticators.

Because recovery is part of the security boundary, secure the account that manages your passkeys as well as your bank’s own recovery process. For app-based OTP, keep any backup or recovery codes somewhere private and accessible if you lose your device. FIDO Alliance guidance also emphasizes the role of authentication and recovery throughout the passkey lifecycle. FIDO Alliance on passkeys and phishing prevention.
Check what your bank actually supports
Passkey support and fallback options vary by bank; there is no bank-by-bank availability list established here. Open your bank’s official app or website and inspect its sign-in security settings and account recovery instructions. FIDO specifications describe passkeys and security keys for FIDO-enabled systems, but that does not mean a particular bank accepts every method. FIDO user authentication specifications. The UK National Cyber Security Centre has published a direction to recommend passkeys where services support them and two-step verification otherwise; that is guidance, not confirmation of any bank’s current options. - Open your bank’s official app or type its known web address yourself; avoid links in unexpected messages.
- Go to the official security or sign-in settings and look for passkeys or another phishing-resistant method.
- If the bank offers passkeys, enroll through its official app or website, then check how the passkey is backed up and how you would recover access.
- If passkeys are not offered, choose an authenticator app over SMS when available, and store any recovery codes privately.
- Consider a FIDO2 security key only if your bank accepts security keys and the key works with your devices; compatibility is not universal.
Never give a one-time code to someone who contacted you unexpectedly. A legitimate sign-in prompt should be initiated by you, not by a caller or message asking you to read out a code.
