Estimate hosted AI API spend by multiplying expected requests by the cost of billable usage per request, then add separately billed tools, media, and services. The formula is straightforward; the forecast is only as reliable as your assumptions about traffic, prompt and response sizes, and how the application uses the model. Provider rates change, so check the live rate card before using any price in a budget.
Start with the cost formula
For a text workflow, estimate each usage category separately:

Estimated cost for a period = expected requests × (input units per request × input rate + output units per request × output rate) + separately billed tools, modalities, or services.

For a monthly estimate, use monthly requests; for a release budget, use the expected request count over the release period.

This is a planning calculation, not a guaranteed bill. The actual amount depends on the selected model, current rate schedule, application behavior, and how usage is routed and billed.
Build a workload estimate, not just a token estimate
Forecast the number and type of requests your application will make. A user-visible action may trigger more than one model call, and a multi-step or agent workflow can add intermediate inference tokens and tool usage that are not apparent from the final answer.
Estimate request volume
Choose a period, then estimate active users, actions per user, and model calls per action. Account for retries, background jobs, and any multi-step flow. Do not assume one user action equals one API request unless the application actually makes one call.

Estimate input and output sizes
For each request category, estimate the billable input and output units. Include system instructions, conversation history, retrieved context, and other content sent to the model in the input estimate. Estimate output separately; a long response can cost differently from a short one.
Separate distinct billing categories
Do not fold every request into a single average if the provider prices categories differently. Track cached input, cache writes, longer-context tiers, batch or priority service, and other rate distinctions as separate line items where applicable. Add tool charges and non-text usage separately.
Images, audio, video, and other multimodal inputs may use modality-specific billing rules. Use the provider’s own pricing method or calculator rather than treating such requests as ordinary text tokens. If a workflow uses tools, include their charges under the applicable pricing rules as well as any model inference generated around those tool calls.

Create low, expected, and high scenarios
Make three forecasts rather than presenting a single number as certain. Vary the assumptions that most affect the bill: requests per day or month, input size, output size, and the share of requests that use tools or non-text input. The figures below are a structure for your own estimates, not claims about typical application usage.

Write the assumptions next to each scenario. For example, record the planned requests per month, estimated input and output units per request, model and service tier, and percentage of calls with tools or media. This makes it possible to see which assumption drives the result and revise it when you have real usage data.
Check the provider’s full rate structure
Compare equivalent workloads, not just headline input prices. Before selecting a model or deployment route, check the rate unit, input and output rates, cache treatment, context tier, batch or expedited options, modality and tool charges, geography or data-residency needs, billing route, and reporting dimensions.

- OpenAI API pricing lists rates per one million tokens and distinguishes categories such as input, cached input, cache writes, output, context lengths, service tiers, modalities, and certain tool charges. It is a live rate card, not a durable benchmark.
- Anthropic’s Claude Platform pricing documentation describes rates by model and feature. For Claude on certain marketplaces, usage is rated in USD under standard per-model and per-feature rates and then converted to Claude Consumption Units for marketplace billing; do not assume the marketplace invoice uses the same line-item presentation as direct API billing.
- Google’s Gemini Developer API pricing documentation explains that agent inference costs include standard model inference, including intermediate input and reasoning tokens generated during agent loops; tool fees follow their respective pricing rules.
- Google Cloud’s Generative AI pricing page lists pricing in USD and describes billing in terms of tokens for the cited modality-pricing references. Its examples illustrate why media usage needs modality-specific treatment; product labels and pricing can change.
Where an organization or marketplace bills through a cloud or intermediary route, confirm how that route represents usage and charges. A provider’s direct API rate structure may not map one-for-one to the invoice presentation or reporting dimensions available through another billing route.

Provider rates are commercial terms that can change. Reopen the relevant provider pricing page immediately before using a numerical rate in a forecast, and record the model, service conditions, rate unit, geography or billing route if relevant, and date checked. The official pages reviewed for this guidance do not establish a universal monthly cost for a new application, so avoid treating any one illustrative rate as a prediction of your bill.
Keep the calculation in a spreadsheet or other budget model with separate rows for requests, input, output, cached usage, tools, modalities, and service tiers as needed. If any assumption changes—such as prompt length, response limits, routing, or expected launch traffic—update the matching line rather than hiding the change inside a new total.
Replace assumptions with measured usage after launch
Once the application is running, compare forecast usage and spend with provider reports for the same period. Where available, group or filter by model, API key, workspace, and time period; inspect token distributions and the mix of features or tools used. Update the low, expected, and high scenarios using measured traffic instead of relying indefinitely on pre-launch assumptions.
Reporting differs by provider and billing route. For example, Anthropic documents usage reports with time buckets and dimensions including model, API key, workspace, and inference geography where supported. Its cost report covers token usage, web search, and code execution, with daily buckets and certain endpoint-specific exclusions. Treat those capabilities as provider-specific rather than assuming all reports expose the same fields.
Budget alerts and quota controls can help limit or flag spend, but they are safeguards—not substitutes for a workload forecast. Google Cloud’s pricing and cost overview describes budgets, alerts, quota limits, cost tools, and a pricing calculator for accounting for factors such as location and workload. Use the controls available for your actual provider and billing setup.
