If your bank supports passkeys, use one where available: passkeys resist common phishing attacks better than codes from an authenticator app. If it does not, an authenticator app is a useful alternative to password-only or SMS-code sign-in, but its one-time codes can still be stolen through a fake login page. Whichever method you choose, check how you will recover access and sign in after changing devices.
How passkeys and authenticator-app codes differ
A passkey uses public-key cryptography through FIDO/WebAuthn. During sign-in, your device or password manager responds to the legitimate service’s identity; the passkey is bound to that relying-party identity rather than being a secret you type into a page.

An authenticator app typically generates a time-based one-time password (TOTP): a short code you manually enter after the service asks for it. That code is not bound to the page or sign-in session. A convincing phishing site can ask you for the code and relay it to the real service before it expires.

NIST SP 800-63B-4 says manually entered one-time-password outputs are not phishing-resistant because manual entry does not bind the output to the session being authenticated. NIST identifies WebAuthn as an example of verifier-name binding: the authenticator uses the authenticated domain name to select the relevant secret. NIST SP 800-63B-4, Phishing Resistance.

Which method is better for a financial account?
| Consideration | Passkey | Authenticator-app TOTP |
|---|---|---|
| Phishing resistance | Strong against common fake-login and code-relay attacks because the response is bound to the legitimate service identity. | Codes can be entered on a fake site and relayed to the real service. |
| Sign-in | Usually avoids typing a one-time code; the exact prompt depends on the device and service. | Requires opening the app and entering the current code. |
| Device changes | Syncable passkeys can support cross-device use and simpler recovery when correctly implemented. | Plan to bind the authenticator on the new device and invalidate the old one, or use an eligible sync option. Backup behavior varies by app. |
| Bank support | Must be offered for your institution, region, and account type. | Must be offered for your institution, region, and account type. |
| Fallback and recovery | Depends on the bank’s remaining sign-in and recovery options. | Depends on the bank’s remaining sign-in and recovery options. |
For phishing protection, a passkey is generally the stronger choice if your financial institution supports it. An authenticator app remains a reasonable stronger option than relying only on a password or SMS code when passkeys are unavailable. TOTP is generated differently from SMS codes, but both can be exposed if you enter a code into a phishing page.
Check what your bank actually supports
Compatibility is set by each institution, and it can vary by region or account type. This comparison does not establish support at any particular bank. Before changing your sign-in method, open the bank’s security or sign-in settings and check its current instructions for passkeys, authenticator apps, security keys, and recovery. Do not assume that support for one method means support for another.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
A FIDO2 hardware security key is another possible phishing-resistant authenticator, but it is useful only if your provider supports it. Check compatibility before buying one. NIST SP 800-63B-4.
Plan recovery before changing devices
A secure login method is only part of account security. If recovery relies on weak support checks or an easily compromised fallback, an attacker may target that route instead. FIDO Alliance’s 2025 guidance treats recovery as part of the passkey journey, not an afterthought. FIDO Alliance passkey journey guidance.

- Read the bank’s recovery instructions before removing an old phone or authenticator.
- Keep any backup codes or other recovery information the provider supplies somewhere protected and accessible if your usual device is lost.
- For an authenticator app, follow the provider’s migration process. NIST advises binding the app on the replacement device and invalidating the old app, or using an eligible sync fabric for the secret. Do not assume apps share the same backup or export behavior. NIST SP 800-63B-4.
- For syncable passkeys, understand which account or platform synchronizes them and how that account can be recovered. NIST says correctly implemented syncable authenticators can provide phishing resistance, cross-device support, and simplified recovery; those benefits are conditional on implementation. NIST syncable-authenticator supplement.
Neither method makes a financial account invulnerable. A compromised device, malware, fraudulent recovery, or flaws in a provider’s implementation can still matter.

Your bank may still require a password or offer passwords, SMS, or other recovery routes alongside a passkey or app code. Use a unique password where one is required, and consider a password manager. NIST recommends password managers for accounts that still use passwords and recommends protecting the manager itself with MFA. NIST SP 800-63B-4.

Passkeys and app codes also have different meanings in standards contexts. PCI SSC says synced passkeys implemented to FIDO2 requirements may be used as a single factor for PCI DSS Requirement 8.4.2; its separate FAQ says phishing-resistant authentication alone does not satisfy Requirements 8.4.1 or 8.4.3, which require an additional factor. These are interpretations for specific PCI DSS requirements, not a universal rule that a consumer bank passkey replaces MFA.
