AI video generators use a model to create or transform moving images from inputs such as text, still images, or existing video. Each provider sets its own credit meter, so the cost depends on the service and generation settings—not a universal industry rate. And permission to use an output under a provider’s terms does not automatically clear rights in the people, brands, or source material shown in it.
What does an AI video model do?
A video model is the component that generates or transforms video from the inputs a product accepts. Its available inputs and controls depend on the provider; one service’s features should not be assumed to exist in another.

OpenAI’s Sora system card documents one example: Sora accepted text, image, and video inputs. The documented workflows included generating video from text, animating a still image, extending a video, and filling missing frames. These examples illustrate text-to-video, image-to-video, and video-to-video workflows; they are not a feature list for every AI video generator.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGeneration products can also include safeguards alongside creative controls. OpenAI’s Sora materials describe provenance signals, including visible and invisible signals and C2PA metadata; its safety page also describes a consent attestation for uploads of images depicting people. Those measures are examples of product safeguards, not proof that every person or piece of material in a generated clip has been legally cleared.

How do video-generation credits work?
Credits are units defined by an individual provider, not a shared industry currency. A credit total from one service cannot be compared directly with another service’s total as if each credit had the same cash value or bought the same amount of video.
Rates can depend on the model, duration, resolution, audio setting, and input or reference media. Check the current rate for the exact model and settings before estimating a clip. Also budget for retries: Runway’s plan guidance notes that a prompt may not produce the desired result on the first attempt, and each generation uses credits (Runway Standard plan details).
Runway creator app examples
Runway’s creator-product help documentation, accessed in 2026, lists Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second. At that rate, a five-second generation costs 60 credits and a ten-second generation costs 120 credits. These figures apply to that Runway model and product surface; they are not general rates for AI video.

Runway’s API pricing documentation, accessed in 2026, lists Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second, and Veo 3.1 at 40 credits per second with audio or 20 credits per second without audio. These are API rates, not creator-app rates. Consult the Runway API Pricing & Costs page for the current rate and applicable settings.

Runway Standard plan examples
Runway’s Standard plan documentation, accessed in 2026, gives examples of 400 credits for ten seconds of Veo 3.1 with audio and 240 credits for twenty seconds of Gen-4.5. These are plan examples rather than a universal conversion rule; check the current plan page and model rate before budgeting.
How to estimate the credits for a finished clip
- Choose the product surface. Confirm whether you are using a creator app or an API; the same provider can have different rate tables for each.
- Confirm the model and settings. Check duration, resolution, audio, and any input or reference-media options against the provider’s current pricing page.
- Calculate one generation. Apply the listed rate to the duration when the provider prices by time, or use the stated cost for the exact output configuration.
- Allow for iterations. Estimate additional generations for prompt changes or unwanted results. A single successful clip may require more than one attempt, and each attempt can consume credits.
- Check the plan allocation and current terms. A plan’s credit allowance and example costs can change. Do not translate one provider’s credits into another’s without current cash prices and clearly stated assumptions.
What can you do with an AI-generated video?
The answer depends on the provider’s terms and the rights involved in the specific output. Separate three questions: what the service permits under its agreement, what rights you have in the source material and depicted elements, and what rules apply where you publish.

Provider permission is not a blanket rights clearance
Runway’s creator help page says that, as between the creator and Runway, the creator retains ownership and rights in creations and generations. It also says Runway does not impose non-commercial restrictions on creations, subject to its terms and policies; formal attribution to Runway is not required (Runway Usage rights; Runway commercial-use guidance). That is Runway’s stated position under its terms, not a universal legal rule or a guarantee that every output is exclusive, copyrightable, or cleared for every use.

It also warns that permission from Runway does not provide rights to third-party likenesses, trademarks, or other input material (Runway Dev commercial-use guidance). A person’s image, a brand logo, a clip, a photograph, music, or other material used as an input can raise separate rights questions.

Check before publishing
- Read the provider’s current terms, Usage Policy, and any plan-specific conditions for the account or product surface you used.
- Confirm that you have permission for uploaded footage, images, audio, and other source materials.
- Consider whether depicted people, recognizable voices, trademarks, or other protected elements require permission for your intended use.
- Check the disclosure and labeling rules of the platform where you will publish, along with any rules that apply to your project or location.
- Keep in mind that a product safeguard such as consent attestation or provenance metadata does not itself establish legal clearance for the output.
Is Sora available now?
No. OpenAI states that the Sora product is no longer available as of April 26, 2026, on its Creating with Sora safely page. The Sora system card remains useful here as documentation of how that system worked; it should not be read as a claim that the consumer product is currently available.
