Indoor autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and outdoor parking robots do not automatically need separate platforms—and LiDAR is not an outdoor-only sensor. The right architecture depends on the site’s surfaces, localization conditions, weather exposure, safety boundaries, and facility integration. Those requirements may lead to different configurations, but the title’s claim that the platforms “cannot share” is too broad without a specific robot and deployment to assess.
Why the indoor-versus-outdoor split is not universal
“Indoor” and “outdoor” describe operating contexts, not complete engineering specifications. A covered or underground parking facility may deny GPS, while an outdoor site may present different surfaces, weather, and environmental conditions. A robot’s sensor suite and software therefore need to be matched to the actual operating envelope rather than chosen from the indoor or outdoor label alone.

AMRA-201:2026 applies to mobile robots in industrial and service settings on solid travel surfaces, including environments with multiple terrains. It provides general requirements and test methods, not a guarantee that a particular product will work at a particular parking site. AMRA-201:2026
There is also no inherent indoor/outdoor boundary around LiDAR. A 2021 SAE paper describes advanced 3D LiDAR in AMR applications in both settings. Its author, Mircea Gradu, who was affiliated with Velodyne LiDAR, wrote that next-generation sensors could help AMRs monitor and respond to changing surroundings in both indoor and outdoor applications. That is the paper author’s perspective, not a standard or product test. SAE paper on advanced 3D LiDAR for AMRs

What determines whether configurations should differ
Compare the intended deployments against the same requirements. A different answer on one or more of these dimensions may justify a different configuration, but does not by itself prove that the robots need unrelated platforms.
Surface, facility, and route
Document the travel surface, ramps, transitions, obstacles, work zones, and areas the robot must avoid. Also identify facility systems or digital interfaces the robot needs to use. AMRA-300:2026 provides guidance for discussing physical and digital facility requirements, work and prohibited areas, and human-robot safety measures; it is guidance for planning, not certification of a named robot. Localization and mapping
Check whether GPS is available where the robot must operate, how its map is created and updated, and how it handles drift and moving objects. Indoor parking is not necessarily GPS-reliable: an SAE paper from 2020 describes tightly coupled LiDAR/IMU odometry and mapping for a dynamic underground parking environment and reports stable pose estimation there. The accessible abstract gives no numerical performance result, so it cannot support a specific accuracy claim. SAE paper on LiDAR/IMU localization in underground parking
Perception and environmental conditions
Specify which objects the robot must detect, the distances and lighting conditions involved, and how sensor data will be processed. Rain can affect 3D LiDAR perception: a 2023 research record notes that raindrops may be mistaken for objects. It does not establish a universal effect size or a remedy that applies to every sensor or robot. 2023 research on rain-aware 3D LiDAR

Environmental operating range and sensor energy demand are also design considerations identified in the 2021 SAE paper. The available source does not specify temperature limits, power draw, or other product-level values for a particular robot, so those must be verified for the platform and site in question.
Safety and verification
Define where the robot may work, where it is prohibited, how people interact with it, and what tests demonstrate safe operation in the intended conditions. AMRA-201:2026 provides general requirements and test methods; AMRA-300:2026 guides facility planning. Neither establishes that a specific product is certified or suitable for a site.

Parking robots may span more than the robot itself
Some parking automation systems divide responsibility across the vehicle, facility equipment, and user domains. ISO 23374-1:2023 describes automated valet parking (AVPS) for unoccupied vehicles in prescribed parking-facility areas and treats it as a level-4 system with physically separated subsystems. ISO 23374-1:2023
That system boundary matters when evaluating architecture: a capability may depend on facility equipment or user systems, rather than sensors and software carried entirely on a robot. But ISO 23374-1 is specifically about AVPS; it is not a standard for every low-profile vehicle-moving parking robot, nor evidence for a particular chassis or sensor layout.

How to make a defensible platform decision
- Describe the deployment. Record surfaces, transitions, routes, work and prohibited areas, GPS availability, lighting, weather exposure, human interaction, and facility interfaces.
- Set measurable acceptance tests. Specify the localization, perception, environmental, and safety outcomes required at that site. Do not substitute a general mobile-robot standard for product-specific evidence.
- Check the proposed system boundary. Establish which functions reside on the robot and which depend on facility equipment or user systems.
- Validate the configuration in representative conditions. Review test evidence for the actual platform and operating envelope, including relevant dynamic scenes and environmental interference.
The available standards and papers support this requirements-based approach, but do not identify a vendor, model, site, or weather envelope. They therefore cannot establish whether two specific products can share a chassis, sensors, or software platform. That decision requires product-level specifications and validation against the intended deployment.
