Palworld’s DeathPenalty server setting determines what a player loses on death. The four documented values are None (nothing drops), Item (items drop but equipment stays), ItemAndEquipment (items and equipment drop), and All (items, equipment, and every Pal on the player’s team drop). On a dedicated server, change the value in PalWorldSettings.ini, then restart the server so the new rule is loaded.

What the DeathPenalty setting controls
DeathPenalty is a world rule for player deaths. It decides which parts of the player’s carried inventory, equipped gear, and active Pal team are included in the death drop. It does not define a separate death animation, respawn location, or experience-loss system; the documented parameter concerns the possessions exposed when a character dies.

Pocketpair’s server-configuration reference lists the four accepted values exactly as None, Item, ItemAndEquipment, and All. Its definition is: “None: No drops, Item: Drop all items except equipment, ItemAndEquipment: Drop all items, All: Drop all items and all Pals on team.” See the official Palworld server configuration reference for the current parameter list.
The names are enum values, not descriptive labels you can rewrite. Use the spelling and capitalization shown above. A value such as items, Equipment, or Everything is not one of the documented choices.

Every DeathPenalty value at a glance
| Value | What the official definition says drops | What remains protected by that rule | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
None |
Nothing | Items, equipment, and the player’s team Pals | Casual co-op, beginner worlds, building, and testing |
Item |
All items except equipment | Equipped equipment and the player’s team Pals | A recovery run with less disruption to a player’s working loadout |
ItemAndEquipment |
All items, including equipment | The player’s team Pals, because this value does not include them in the documented drop | Higher stakes without exposing the active Pal team |
All |
All items, all equipment, and all Pals on the player’s team | Nothing covered by the documented death-drop categories | Servers where the group explicitly wants maximum recovery risk |
“Items” and “equipment” are kept separate in the official wording. The reference does not provide a longer item-by-item inventory taxonomy, so administrators should treat the table as the authoritative distinction rather than trying to infer undocumented exceptions. Likewise, All specifically says Pals on the player’s team; it does not state that every Pal stored elsewhere is dropped.
How the four choices change a server’s risk
None: no recovery trip after death
With None, a death does not create a drop to retrieve under the documented rule. Players can experiment, explore, or learn a boss encounter without putting carried possessions at risk. This is the clearest choice for a cooperative group that treats death as a temporary setback rather than a resource-management event.

Because nothing in the documented categories is dropped, an administrator can concentrate on whether the server starts correctly and whether the rest of the rules behave as intended.
Item: inventory matters, working gear stays
Item drops all items except equipment. The practical result is a recovery loop focused on the player’s carried items while equipped gear is preserved. This can make an expedition consequential without forcing players to recover the tools or armor they were actively using.

Choose it when the group wants death to have a cost but considers replacing or retrieving equipped gear unnecessarily disruptive. The official definition does not include team Pals in this value, so the active team remains outside the listed drop categories.
ItemAndEquipment: a harsher inventory rule
ItemAndEquipment includes both ordinary items and equipment in the drop. A death can therefore remove the complete carried loadout described by the two categories, increasing the work required to return to the previous state.
The name does not include Pals, and Pocketpair’s definition does not add them to this value. That makes it a middle ground for groups that want equipment to be recoverable after a fatal mistake while keeping their team Pals out of the documented death drop.
All: possessions plus the active Pal team
All is the most severe documented option. It includes items, equipment, and all Pals on the player’s team. A death during exploration, a boss attempt, or a dangerous journey can therefore create a recovery task involving both the player’s belongings and the team that was accompanying them.

Use this only when everyone understands the consequence before joining the world. The setting is not merely a stronger version of equipment loss: it adds the active team-Pal category that is absent from the other three values.
Which setting should you choose?
There is no published statistic showing that one value improves retention, difficulty, or player satisfaction by a measured amount. The choice is a server-policy decision based on the documented loss outcomes. Evaluate it on three questions.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Recovery burden: How much work should a player do after dying before they can resume normal play?
- Progression risk: Should valuable equipment and the active Pal team be exposed, or only carried items?
- Group tolerance: Will every participant accept losing progress during exploration, boss fights, or an accidental death?
For casual co-op and beginner groups
Start with None when the priority is uninterrupted cooperation, construction, or learning the game. It removes the need to organize a recovery expedition and avoids arguments about whether a death was caused by a mistake, a difficult encounter, or a connection problem.
For a meaningful but manageable consequence
Choose Item when players want death to matter but do not want to lose their equipped tools and armor. It creates a reason to return to the death location while preserving the loadout needed to continue playing.

For high-stakes groups that want team Pals protected
ItemAndEquipment suits a group that accepts losing the carried loadout but wants to keep the active Pal team outside the documented drop. Make that distinction clear before enabling it; the setting is materially harsher than Item because equipment is included.
For deliberately punishing survival rules
Select All only if the group specifically wants the possibility of recovering both possessions and team Pals after death. Explain the rule in the server description and community guidelines so a new player does not mistake the loss for a bug.
How to change DeathPenalty on a dedicated server
The setting is changed in the dedicated server’s PalWorldSettings.ini file. The PalWorldSettings.ini reference provides additional context about that configuration file, while the official guide documents the server-settings workflow.
- Stop the server or use its configuration editor. If your host provides a control panel, open the file editor or settings panel that writes to
PalWorldSettings.ini. If you manage the files directly, make the change while the server process is not rewriting the file. - Back up the current file. Keep a copy of the existing settings before editing. This gives you a known-good version to restore if a syntax mistake prevents the server from loading the intended configuration.
- Open the options line. Palworld settings are stored in the options entry in
PalWorldSettings.ini. Preserve the surrounding syntax and existing parameters. - Add or replace the parameter. Insert one of these exact assignments in the options line:
DeathPenalty=None,DeathPenalty=Item,DeathPenalty=ItemAndEquipment, orDeathPenalty=All. - Save the file without changing the enum spelling. Do not add quotation marks around the value, change its capitalization, or substitute spaces for the equals sign.
- Start or restart the server. The server must load the edited configuration before the new rule can govern deaths. A panel may require a deliberate restart after saving rather than merely closing the editor.
- Confirm the active configuration. Reopen the file or panel and verify that the intended value is still present. Communicate the rule to players before they begin an expedition under it.
A representative assignment is:
DeathPenalty=ItemAndEquipment
Keep only the value you intend to use. If a configuration panel exposes a dropdown, select the label that corresponds exactly to the documented enum and allow the panel to write the file.

Troubleshooting a setting that appears not to work
The server starts, but deaths follow the old rule
- Check that you edited the active server’s
PalWorldSettings.ini, not a local single-player file or an unused copy. - Confirm that the parameter is inside the options entry and that there is no misspelling in
DeathPenalty. - Check capitalization: use
None,Item,ItemAndEquipment, orAllexactly. - Restart the server after saving, then verify that the saved value remains in the file or control panel.
The server fails to load the intended configuration
Restore the backup, compare the edited line with the surrounding options syntax, and reapply only the single parameter change. A malformed options line can affect more than the death rule, so avoid deleting unrelated settings while troubleshooting.
Players disagree about what should have dropped
Use the official definitions as the server’s rulebook. Item excludes equipment; ItemAndEquipment includes equipment but does not list team Pals; All adds all Pals on the player’s team. If an object does not fit the wording, document the observed result for your particular game version rather than promising an exception that Pocketpair’s reference does not state.
Plan the player experience before changing the rule
Changing DeathPenalty is a policy decision, not just a technical edit. Announce the selected value in the server’s welcome message, rules page, or community channel. Tell players whether the world uses None, Item, ItemAndEquipment, or All before they bring valuable gear or a full Pal team into a risky area.
For a new world, decide the rule before inviting players so early deaths do not create an unexpected standard. For an established world, announce the change and give players time to return from dangerous areas. Keep a dated backup of the previous configuration so you can reverse the policy if the group’s expectations change.
Administrators should also distinguish this setting from other world rules. DeathPenalty controls the documented death-drop categories; it does not by itself describe every possible cause of item loss, server rollback, or character-state problem. When investigating an incident, record the selected enum, the server version, and the configuration currently loaded.

Version caveat
The values in this guide come from Pocketpair’s current server-configuration reference. Palworld can change configuration names or behavior in a future release, so check the official configuration page before applying an update to a production server. The independent World Settings reference is useful for cross-checking how the parameter is described, but the official documentation should be your final authority when the two sources differ.
