PALEE (Personal Active Learning & Evaluation Engine) is a command-line tool built around an Obsidian vault. It combines spaced-review scheduling with prerequisite tracking to recommend what to study next, while using an AI tutor for explanation exercises. Its author, Kuldeep Ece 025, describes it as a personal project—not a standalone learning platform or an independently audited product.
What PALEE does
PALEE uses an Obsidian vault as its data store. It can work with existing topic notes, adding study state to their frontmatter rather than moving learning material into a separate app. The project article illustrates fields for a schema marker, topic ID and title, prerequisites, mastery, ease factor, review interval and due date.

The intended workflow is to ask the CLI for the next topic, study or explain a concept, and check progress. In the article, “Pod Lifecycle in Kubernetes” appears as an example recommendation, and a progress display shows 23.45%. Those are illustrative output from the author’s post, not general performance figures.

Review timing and prerequisites work together
The author says PALEE uses a hand-built SM-2 spaced-repetition scheduler alongside a dependency graph, or DAG. A topic’s review timing is therefore considered with its place in the learning sequence: prerequisites should come first, while a topic that unlocks later material can matter to prioritization. The author says recommendations can be traced to what is due and what a topic depends on or unlocks.
#1 Best Overall
- Crisp writing pages provide plenty of space for personal reflections, sketching, or for recording favorite quotations or poems.
- Premium 120 gsm paper takes pen or pencil beautifully.
- Paper is acid-free and of archival quality.
- Light gray lines subtly guide your writing.
- A ribbon bookmark keeps your place.
This is a design claim about PALEE, not evidence that it outperforms other study tools. The article does not provide a comparative test against named alternatives.
Roadmaps can be checked offline
When importing a roadmap, PALEE checks prerequisite relationships as a DAG. According to the author, that validation works offline. A --auto-chain option for adoption and roadmap commands resolves Obsidian wikilinks into dependencies. The post also describes fixes for track scoping, sorting nested folders and avoiding frontmatter edits to linked image files.
Where AI fits—and where it does not
PALEE’s core review schedule is deterministic; AI is used at the tutoring edge. The described tutor asks the learner to explain a concept and grades the response. The author says it waits for the learner to confirm before saving consequential changes, keeping the learner in control of study-state updates.

The author says the tutor can use any OpenAI-compatible endpoint and reports using a free tier. That does not mean every compatible service is free, has the same terms, or is endorsed by the project. Check the chosen provider’s own pricing, privacy terms and availability before sending study material to it.
Sessions are designed to resume
The project article says study sessions are saved as Obsidian notes, with a 250-word “hot memory” file intended to help resume later. That makes continuity part of the vault workflow rather than relying only on the learner to remember where a previous session stopped.
Implementation details reported by the author
Kuldeep Ece 025 identifies the stack as TypeScript and Node 22, with Commander for CLI handling and YAML frontmatter for storage. The author also describes atomic writes, file locking for concurrent Obsidian edits, and support for Windows and Unix paths. These are the project author’s implementation claims, not the result of an independent technical audit.

Who may find PALEE useful
PALEE is most relevant to someone who already keeps topic notes in Obsidian and wants a command-line workflow that connects review timing to prerequisites. Its distinguishing ideas, as described by its author, are:
- Study state stored alongside notes in an existing vault.
- Spaced review combined with prerequisite relationships.
- Offline validation of roadmap dependencies.
- An AI explanation exercise that requires confirmation before consequential writes.
- Saved sessions intended to support continuity between study periods.
Whether those choices fit depends on how you study: the project assumes comfort with a CLI and an Obsidian vault, and it does not establish that every user needs or prefers its AI tutoring workflow. The author frames the motivation personally: “Flashcard apps didn’t understand dependencies. Note apps didn’t schedule reviews. So I built my own.” That is the problem PALEE aims to address, not a universal finding about flashcard or note-taking apps.
