EasyEffects, a Linux audio-effects app for PipeWire, can make weak built-in speakers sound more balanced or make some details easier to hear—without buying new hardware. It does this by shaping the audio signal, not by improving the speakers themselves: small drivers still cannot reproduce deep bass or the output of a larger sound system.
The app’s official notebook-speaker guide lays out a useful signal chain, but its settings are examples from one ThinkPad, not a universal fix. Start with the routing and setup, then tune gradually for your own laptop.

What EasyEffects can—and cannot—fix
EasyEffects applies playback effects such as equalization, bass enhancement, compression, stereo processing and limiting. Used carefully, these can improve perceived balance, presence or audibility on a particular laptop. Bass enhancement, for example, adds harmonics that can help low-frequency content seem more noticeable; it does not make tiny speakers produce genuine sub-bass.
The physical ceiling remains. The EasyEffects notebook-speaker guide says each notebook has a different frequency response and dynamic range, and that its result will not come close to more substantial sound systems. Processing can also make the sound worse if it is excessive.

- [ADAPTIVE-CHANNEL-SWITCHING WITH G-SENSOR] - Ensures the left and right sound channels remain correctly positioned whether the speaker is clamped to the top or bottom of your monitor.
- [CONVENIENT TOUCH CONTROL] - Three intuitive touch buttons on the front allow for easy muting and volume adjustment.
Check PipeWire and output routing first
EasyEffects is intended for applications using PipeWire. Many Linux distributions provide an easyeffects package; the project also documents Flatpak as an option, including available plugins that may be missing from a distribution build. Confirm that your audio session uses PipeWire and that the effects you want are available in your installation. See the EasyEffects project README for current installation guidance.
Keep the actual hardware device selected as the default input or output. The project README explicitly warns: “Do NOT set Easy Effects virtual devices as your default audio input/output.” Choose your laptop’s speakers as the playback device and use EasyEffects to process the stream; do not route audio by making its virtual devices the system default.

Build a speaker-tuning chain gradually
The sequence below follows the official guide’s approach. Add and adjust effects one at a time, listening to familiar speech and music between changes. Its example values came from the guide author’s ThinkPad P1 and should not be treated as recommended settings for every laptop.
- Add a limiter near the end of the chain. It can control peaks before they reach the DAC. Use restraint: over-limiting can cause distortion or other unwanted effects.
- Place a high-pass filter before bass enhancement. The guide’s author began around 50 Hz and raised the cutoff until the lower audible signal started to change, then backed off slightly. On that particular machine, the change began around 160 Hz and the final cutoff was 145 Hz. Your laptop may behave differently.
- Try a bass enhancer. It can create harmonics that make low-frequency content more perceptible on small drivers. It cannot restore bass the speakers cannot physically reproduce, so stop if the result becomes boomy or harsh.
- Add multiband compression if dynamics or frequency balance need adjustment. The guide suggests beginning with input gain at -6 dB, then adjusting for the notebook. Compression can reduce dynamic range and let you tune frequency bands, but too much can make playback sound unnatural or fatiguing.
- Optionally try modest stereo widening. The guide’s author offers a stereo base of 0.25 as an example starting point. Widening can have side effects, including reduced bass, so compare with it on and off rather than assuming it is an improvement.
Change only one control at a time and listen at a comfortable volume. If voices become piercing, music sounds distorted, bass becomes bloated or listening becomes tiring, reduce the effect or remove it. The guide cautions that an excessive processing chain can worsen the result.

Use a preset only when it suits your laptop
The community preset index includes profiles for several named built-in speakers, including Xiaomi Pad 6, HP Pavilion x360 11th Gen, Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 AMD and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2. It also lists a JackHack96 preset described as using advanced auto gain that works well on laptop speakers. These are community contributions, not guarantees of compatibility or independently verified results. Browse the Community Presets index and prefer an exact model match where available.
The index says presets can be imported through the application’s preset controls or copied into the configuration directory; the location depends on whether EasyEffects was installed through Flatpak or another package method. It also notes that EasyEffects 6.0.0 changed preset structure and that PulseEffects presets may need conversion. Check the preset’s version and installation method before importing it.

Choose between manual tuning and a preset
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual tuning | You want to hear what each filter changes, or there is no model-matched preset. | It takes more listening and adjustment; settings from another laptop may not transfer. |
| Community preset | A preset targets your exact laptop model and is compatible with your EasyEffects version and package. | It may not match your unit, preferences or software version; treat it as a starting point, not a proven fix. |
There is no universally best chain established by the project guidance. Whether compression, bass harmonics or stereo widening helps depends on your speakers and the sound you prefer.
