Owncast is an open-source, self-hosted live-streaming server; the reviewed documentation does not establish an equivalent built-in prerecorded playlist scheduler. The choice is less “which one never stops?” than whether you want hosted prerecorded playout or are prepared to operate your own streaming infrastructure.
Owncast vs Restream: the practical difference
| Question | Owncast | Restream |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Open-source, self-hosted live video streaming and chat server. You run the server and arrange its delivery setup. Owncast | Hosted live-streaming and distribution service. Its separate Upload & Stream workflow documents prerecorded video, scheduling, playlists, and looping. Restream Upload & Stream |
| Documented prerecorded playout | The reviewed documentation does not establish a built-in scheduler for prerecorded playlists. | Scheduling and looping prerecorded videos are documented; Restream gives around-the-clock TV, music, and news as examples. Feature limits depend on the current plan and account offer. |
| Operations | You are responsible for the server, network capacity, updates, monitoring, and recovery. | Restream hosts the service, but its guidance still calls for operational supervision and restarting long-running streams every 24 hours. |
| Multiple destinations | Owncast is a streaming destination. Its project says it works with software that sends RTMP and names Restream among compatible tools, so they can be parts of one workflow rather than mutually exclusive choices. Owncast project | Distribution to multiple social platforms is a central capability; the free plan page says it permits two simultaneous channels. Verify current destination and plan limits before relying on them. Restream pricing |
Neither option should be treated as a guarantee of uninterrupted availability. The reviewed sources do not establish comparable uptime, viewer-capacity guarantees, failure rates, or total operating costs.

Which one fits your channel?
Choose Restream for scheduled prerecorded loops
If your main goal is to upload recorded programs, schedule them, and loop a playlist as a YouTube live stream, Restream has the more directly documented workflow. Its Upload & Stream page describes this kind of playout. Before subscribing, check the live product and pricing pages for the plan-specific upload-library duration, playlist and looping behavior, destination support, and recovery options. The published plan information can change, and the available evidence does not establish a reliable price or a universal limit for every account.
Choose Owncast to run a self-hosted streaming destination
Owncast makes sense when you want to operate your own streaming site and chat experience and have the capacity to manage a server. It accepts RTMP from broadcasting software; its project lists OBS, Streamlabs, and Restream among tools used with it. That compatibility does not make Owncast a hosted prerecorded scheduler. It means Restream can potentially send a stream to an Owncast destination as part of a broader setup.

Put StreamNeo first if you want cloud-based YouTube playout
For an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and gives each account one free first day. StreamNeo is for YouTube playout, not a camera-based live feed or a multistream destination.
What self-hosting with Owncast involves
Plan for server and network operations
With Owncast, self-hosting shifts operational responsibility to you. You must supply and maintain the server and network capacity, monitor the stream, apply updates, and recover from interruptions. The reviewed documentation does not establish minimum hardware specifications, a viewer-capacity guarantee, an uptime SLA, or a complete operating cost. Requirements depend on the encoding and delivery setup; do not assume a particular consumer computer will suit every channel.

Understand frame rate and latency trade-offs
Owncast documents frame rates from 24 to 120 fps. Higher frame rates use more server CPU and increase bandwidth for viewers. Its latency buffer also involves a trade-off: a smaller buffer can reduce delay, but leaves less room to absorb slow transfers, network blips, and errors. Optional video passthrough can reduce CPU use by avoiding re-encoding, but unsupported input formats or long keyframe intervals can cause playback or latency problems. Review the Owncast streaming documentation against your actual encoder and source before relying on passthrough.
Restream’s duration and plan caveats
Plan around its 24-hour restart guidance
Restream says it does not impose a stream-duration limit, but warns that maintenance may restart a stream running continuously for more than 24 hours. Its Help Center recommendation is to restart every 24 hours. For an always-on channel, treat that as an operational task: schedule a restart window, monitor the transition, and define how you will restore the stream if it does not resume. This is Restream guidance, not a YouTube rule. Restream: How long can I stream for?

Confirm the exact prerecorded features you need
Restream’s Upload & Stream materials describe upload-library durations and features that vary by plan. Confirm the current plan’s library limit, loop behavior, scheduling, resolution, and destinations in the live product UI before building your channel around them. Do not infer a plan’s eligibility or price from an unclear or zero-price label on a captured page; use the current offer shown to your account. Upload & Stream details · Pricing and channel limits
Keep YouTube archives separate from 24/7 availability
A live stream can remain available to viewers while its full recording is not safely preserved as a YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If the archive matters, keep a local recording and decide whether to divide programming into shorter broadcasts. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Copyright and monetization still apply to looped programming
A technically working 24/7 stream is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic, and that highly repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. Its live-stream rules also require the creator to have the necessary rights to the material, including music rights where applicable. These policies do not make every 24/7 stream ineligible; the content and rights situation matter. Review YouTube channel monetization policies and YouTube live-streaming policies before scheduling a playlist.

Set up a continuity and archive plan
- Choose the playout model. Use Restream if you need its documented hosted scheduling and prerecorded looping; choose Owncast if you intend to manage a self-hosted destination and its surrounding infrastructure.
- Verify the current plan and destination details. For Restream, confirm upload-library limits, scheduling, loops, resolution, supported destinations, and recovery options in the current account UI. For Owncast, confirm that your server and RTMP workflow match the project’s documentation.
- Configure and test the full path. Test the source, encoder or hosted playlist, destination, and playback on the devices and networks important to your audience. Check that a restart or brief interruption does not leave the channel unattended.
- Keep a local copy of important recordings. Do not rely on a YouTube archive for a broadcast longer than 12 hours; YouTube says it may not capture streams exceeding that duration.
- Write down recovery steps. Identify who checks stream health, how to restart the encoder or playlist, and how to confirm that the YouTube broadcast is live again.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
