You can run Owncast continuously on Ubuntu as an RTMP ingest and self-hosted viewing server. But Owncast’s documented setup sends a broadcast to Owncast; it does not, by itself, send that feed onward to YouTube. To make a continuous YouTube broadcast, you need a separate, verified encoder or relay configured for YouTube. The steps below cover the Ubuntu/Owncast service and the separate YouTube requirements, while making clear where the connection between them must be supplied.
How Owncast and YouTube fit together
Think of this as two destinations, not one automatic connection. A broadcasting encoder sends video to Owncast’s RTMP ingest endpoint. Separately, an encoder sends video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Owncast’s documented receiving endpoint is rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/<your-stream-key>; software may accept the key in a separate field.

The available Owncast and YouTube setup guidance establishes those separate ingest paths, but not a built-in Owncast-to-YouTube forwarding feature or a verified relay configuration joining them. Installing Owncast alone therefore will not make its broadcast appear on YouTube. Before building a production 24/7 setup, identify the additional component that will read or receive the video and publish it to YouTube, and verify its input/output path, credential handling, reconnect behavior, whether it re-encodes, and its own restart policy. Do not assume that putting an Owncast URL into an encoder configured for YouTube is a supported relay workflow.

Choose a host and release
Use an Ubuntu machine that can remain available continuously, either a cloud Linux server or physical hardware you maintain. Select the Owncast Linux release matching the host’s CPU architecture. Make sure FFmpeg is available; Owncast’s quick installer can obtain it when it is absent. Owncast recommends inspecting a remote installer script before running it and does not recommend running the installer as root.

Before committing to a host, check its sustained outbound bandwidth allowance, server region, firewall controls, operating-system maintenance responsibilities, and uptime terms. A one-click Owncast listing is not itself a guarantee about a provider’s availability, bandwidth terms, or suitability in every region.
Allow the required ports
Owncast uses TCP port 8080 for its web interface and TCP port 1935 for RTMP ingest by default. Permit the ports you need through both Ubuntu’s host firewall and the cloud provider’s network firewall. If you expose the admin interface publicly, protect it with a strong unique password; open no additional ports unless your setup requires them.
Install Owncast and run it as a service
- Install the matching Owncast release. Follow Owncast’s Linux installation instructions for your Ubuntu host and architecture, and ensure FFmpeg is installed. Do not run Owncast as root.
- Set up a dedicated service account. The Owncast systemd example uses a dedicated
owncastaccount. Configure the service to run as that account rather than as root. - Use systemd for boot and crash recovery. The Owncast systemd example uses
Restart=alwaysandRestartSec=5. Enable and start the service withsystemctl enable --now owncast. - Check service state and logs. Run
systemctl status owncastto inspect the service andjournalctl -u owncast -fto follow its logs while testing. - Replace default credentials. Change the documented default admin login credentials and default stream key before using the server. The admin password and stream key are separate settings. Use unique secrets and do not put them in public examples, shared screenshots, or source control.
Starting ./owncast directly runs it in the foreground; that alone does not make it start after a reboot. A systemd restart policy can recover the process after a crash, but it cannot guarantee power, internet, disk, or provider availability.

Publish a test feed to Owncast
Configure a compatible broadcasting encoder to publish to Owncast’s RTMP endpoint on port 1935, using the /live path and the stream key you configured. You can enter the key as part of the endpoint or in a separate stream-key field, depending on the encoder. Test that Owncast receives the feed and that its viewing page is reachable before treating the ingest side as ready.
This test confirms only that video reaches Owncast. It does not test delivery to YouTube. Keep the two destinations’ URLs and keys distinct, and do not reuse or publish either service’s credentials.
Configure the separate YouTube output
- Get YouTube’s destination details. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Enter those in the encoder or relay that will publish to YouTube, not in Owncast’s ingest settings.
- Use the recommended transport and encoding behavior. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Test the intended program. Test video and audio similar to what you plan to run continuously, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. A test with a different bitrate or content may not expose the same problems as the actual 24/7 feed.
- Verify the bridge under failure conditions. Confirm which process reads the video, which process publishes to YouTube, how it reconnects after either endpoint drops, and how it starts again after a reboot. Keep the YouTube publishing process under an appropriate service manager as well; Owncast’s systemd service does not automatically supervise a separate relay.
YouTube recommends CBR and the keyframe interval above; those recommendations do not specify a single bitrate for every resolution and frame rate. Select settings that match your encoder, available upstream bandwidth, and intended output, then validate them with YouTube’s health indicators.

Plan bandwidth, storage, and long sessions
Estimate Owncast viewer traffic
Owncast gives this estimate for outbound video transfer: (bitrate in kbps × duration in seconds × viewers) ÷ 8,000,000 = GB. Its estimated peak throughput formula is bitrate in kbps × viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps. In Owncast’s illustrative example, 4,000 kbps with 25 viewers corresponds to 100 Mbps peak throughput and 90 GB over two hours. These are documentation examples, not a hosting guarantee or a universal server requirement. At the same bitrate and viewer count, linearly extending that example to 24 hours would be 1,080 GB; actual traffic depends on viewing patterns, output qualities, and delivery setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Those figures concern viewers receiving video from Owncast. They should not be mistaken for the bandwidth requirement of a YouTube relay: determine the relay’s actual input and output behavior and use the provider’s transfer terms for that path. Multiple output qualities can also change Owncast’s traffic calculation. Owncast notes that S3-compatible object storage can offload video bandwidth.
Plan YouTube session boundaries
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what will happen to every stream longer than 12 hours. If you need recordings or uninterrupted operation across a long session, check the current Live Control Room behavior for your account and workflow, and plan the stream’s session boundaries accordingly rather than assuming one permanent archive.

Security and reliability checks
- Run Owncast as a non-root service account and replace its documented defaults with strong, unique credentials.
- Allow only the needed ports, and verify access rules at both the Ubuntu host and provider firewall.
- Keep the Owncast stream key separate from the YouTube stream key; rotate credentials if they are exposed.
- Monitor the Owncast service logs and YouTube stream health, since they report on different parts of the delivery path.
- If you use physical hardware, a UPS may help through brief power interruptions, but it does not replace reliable internet or service recovery. It is not a requirement for a cloud-hosted server.
Troubleshooting common failures
Owncast’s web page or RTMP ingest is unreachable
Check that the service is running with systemctl status owncast, review journalctl -u owncast -f, and confirm the relevant port is allowed at both firewall layers. The web interface uses port 8080 by default; RTMP ingest uses port 1935.
The encoder cannot publish to Owncast
Check that the encoder uses the Owncast RTMP destination and /live path, and that the stream key matches Owncast’s configured key. A YouTube stream URL or key is not an Owncast ingest credential.
YouTube does not receive the Owncast feed
Owncast’s ingest working does not prove that a feed is being forwarded. Confirm that you have a separate, functioning publishing component connected to YouTube’s stream URL and key. The documented Owncast setup alone does not supply this bridge.

The stream stops after a reboot or process crash
Confirm that the Owncast service is enabled and active with systemctl status owncast. If Owncast is supervised but the YouTube relay is not, the latter may remain stopped; check and configure restart behavior for each process separately.
YouTube reports poor stream health
Review the encoder’s bitrate mode and keyframe interval against YouTube’s recommendations, test with representative video and audio, and monitor stream health during the test. Also check the host’s available upstream capacity and the relay’s connection state.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than a self-hosted Owncast viewing service, StreamNeo is a separate route: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it is not an Owncast relay and does not go live from a camera.
