The OWC Express 1M2 80G is a portable USB4 NVMe enclosure and drive solution built for compatible 80Gbps USB4 and Thunderbolt 5 computers. It can deliver unusually high transfer rates in the right setup, but the 80Gbps label is not a speed guarantee: the host port, operating system, drive configuration and type of transfer all matter. For most buyers, the key question is whether their computer and workload can use the extra bandwidth over a 40Gbps external SSD.
How fast is the OWC Express 1M2 80G?
OWC claims peak real-world speeds above 6,000MB/s when connected to a USB4 80Gbps or Thunderbolt 5 host. Its published figures step down with slower host interfaces:

| Host connection | OWC’s published speed claim |
|---|---|
| USB4 80Gbps or Thunderbolt 5 | Over 6,000MB/s |
| USB4 40Gbps | Over 3,800MB/s |
| Thunderbolt 4 | Up to 3,800MB/s |
| Thunderbolt 3 on Mac | Up to 2,800MB/s |
These are manufacturer claims, not guaranteed results for every computer or workload. Check the exact port capabilities of your computer; a USB-C connector alone does not establish that it supports USB4 80Gbps or Thunderbolt 5. OWC’s product page lists the host-specific figures.
What independent testing found
In a review originally published September 19, 2025, Macworld contributor Jon L. Jacobi reported benchmark results of roughly 6GB/s reads and 5.5GB/s writes overall. In the review’s macOS 15.6.1 testing context, Finder file copies were around 3GB/s. Those figures describe different tests and should not be treated as interchangeable: benchmark results and everyday file transfers can differ. Macworld updated the review on August 27, 2026, adding faster results from a newer drive version supplied by OWC, so the page’s results also reflect more than one version of the product. These observations are useful evidence of potential performance, not a promise for another host or workload. Read Macworld’s review and test notes.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does an 80Gbps enclosure make sense for your computer?
The extra bandwidth is most relevant when both the enclosure and host support the faster link and your work involves repeated transfers of large files. Video footage, large project folders and other sequential workloads are more likely to benefit than routine document copying. On a 40Gbps USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 computer, the drive can still be fast, but OWC’s own figures put those connections below its 80Gbps claim.
- Consider it if your computer has a confirmed USB4 80Gbps or Thunderbolt 5 port and you regularly move large files or need a fast portable working drive.
- Expect lower speeds if your host is USB4 40Gbps, Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 3; OWC lists separate, lower ceilings for those connections.
- It may be unnecessary if your external-storage use is mostly small files, backups that run unattended, or ordinary transfers where the extra bandwidth is unlikely to change your workflow.
OWC lists compatible Macs, PCs, iPad Pro devices, Chromebooks and Surface devices, but compatibility depends on the system’s supported connection. Verify your model’s port specification rather than relying on the device family name. The 80G is a faster tier of the Express 1M2 concept, not a reason to assume every USB-C device can reach 80Gbps.

DIY enclosure or ready-to-run capacity?
OWC offers the Express 1M2 80G as a DIY enclosure and in ready-to-run configurations, with capacities listed up to 8TB. With the DIY option, the enclosure is not the whole storage purchase: you also need a compatible NVMe M.2 SSD, so compare the combined cost with a populated configuration before deciding.
What the DIY drive must match
OWC’s documentation specifies an M-key NVMe M.2 SSD in either 2280 or 2242 form factor. Confirm the exact requirements for the enclosure revision and the drive you intend to install before buying; M.2 describes a physical format family, not a guarantee that every M.2 drive is compatible. The product sales-kit documentation identifies the supported key and form factors.

Historical review prices, not a current quote
Macworld listed these prices in its 2025 review: $219 for the enclosure alone, $349 for 1TB, $499 for 2TB, $699 for 4TB and $1,299 for 8TB. These are historical review-time figures, not verified current prices; the review’s 2026 benchmark update does not make them current. Check the seller’s current listing before comparing the DIY total with a ready-to-run model.
Setup, cable and file-system considerations
The support manual says the enclosure includes a 0.3 m USB4 cable for connecting it to the computer, so a separate cable is not automatically required. OWC says its ready-to-run solutions are formatted as APFS for Mac and iPad use. If you plan to use the drive with Windows, OWC points users to its free Drive Guide to reformat; it describes MacDrive, available separately, as an option for cross-platform file access. Choose a format and software approach for the systems that will actually share the drive, and check OWC’s current documentation for the applicable instructions and availability.

For setup details, consult the OWC Express 1M2 80G support manual and product page. Formatting or reformatting can affect existing data, so back up anything you need before changing a drive’s file system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the speed premium buys—and what it does not
The strongest case for the Express 1M2 80G is access to very high external-drive throughput on a matching 80Gbps USB4 or Thunderbolt 5 host, together with the option to choose your own compatible NVMe drive. It is less compelling when the computer tops out at 40Gbps or the workload rarely moves large files. The available review evidence supports a performance comparison with the preceding 40Gbps Express 1M2, but it does not establish a current like-for-like price comparison against competing external SSDs. Treat the historical prices as context and assess today’s total cost against the speed your system can use.
